    High Heat Density. High Temperatures.

Todays data center technologies compound conventional coolingproblems. Blade servers, communications switches and other electronicsare being packed into tighter and tighter spaces. Computing capacity thatonce filled an entire room is now contained in a single rack creatingextreme power and heat densities.

Conventional Solutions Just Cant Keep Up

While the cornerstone of an effective cooling strategy, you cant rely solely

on conventional mission-critical cooling systems to resolve such high

heat densities. Hot spots or zones require targeted cooling solutions.

And, for extremely high heat loads, conventional approaches may

simply take up too much floor space to be practical.

Business continuity professionals will rely on an integrated solution one

that solves both room-level and rack-level cooling challenges.

    Higher Watt, Higher Heat Densities

This increased capacity is fueled by rapid growth in processing capacity. But,

more compact capacity means higher heat densities. What was a 1 kW rack

now may exceed 10 kW. This requires a shift in focus from a room-based

view of cooling to a rack-based view. More literally, business continuity

professionals must consider both Watt per square foot and kW per rack

    when evaluating cooling solutions.

Today, more than ever, environmental and economic

issues are pushing business continuity professionals to

lobby for energy efficient, environmentally friendly

solutions in their data centers. The Liebert XD solution is

the answer on both fronts. With a hybrid approach that

requires 15% - 50% less chiller plant capacity, as well as

less diesel generator and switchgear capacity required,

the potential energy consumption for your centers is

reduced up to 40%. The significant energy savings

achieved by the Liebert XD solution are attributed to

    these factors:

Locating cooling units closer to the load reducesthe energy required to move the air and resultsin less mixing of hot and cold air.

Micro channel coils provide minimal air pressuredrop losses and improved thermal heat transfer.

No need to over-chill data centers to eliminatehot spots.

However, flexibility is also an important attributeof your cooling systems. The Liebert XD solution a combination of floormount mission-criticalcooling units and supplemental cooling allowsyour facility to adapt as heat loads increase. And byadding/reconfiguring solutions to react to changesin your environment, the flexible configuration ofthe Liebert XD system modules also allowsscalability for future growth.

No Relief In Sight: Heat Loads Rising

Hotter FacilitiesAs processor capabilities increase, so do computer roompower densitiesfrom 50 Watt per square foot (540W/m2)to over 300 Watt per square foot (320W/m2). Your wholedata center just keeps getting hotter.

Hot SpotsCompounding the problem, this higher heat load is notevenly distributed throughout the room. Sometimes, powerdensities can grow into hundreds of Watt per square foot, creating localized hot spots of extreme heat.

A common way to improve performance of

existing raised floor cooling applications has

been the hot aisle/cold aisle approach. In

this configuration, rows of equipment racks

are arranged in alternating "hot" and "cold"

aisles. Only the cold aisles have perforated

floor tiles that allow cool air to come up

    from under the raised floor.

The Cold Aisle Is Feeling A Bit Hot

See also white paper Adaptive Cooling In The Data Center: The Roadmap For Growth at www.liebert.com

Unfortunately, even when using a hot aisle/cold aisle configuration, the limits of standard underfloor coolingare soon reached as rack heat loads increase.

  • 5Business continuity professionals are demanding

an integrated high heat density cooling solution

one that considers both room-level and

    rack-level needs.

Effective solutions need to be flexible.

    Liebert XD: The Flexible Solution

    Flexibility

Floor-mount, rack-mount and ceiling-mount modules, plus a choice of cooling capacities, coverany application requirements.

Plug and play for initial installation and future growth.

Can cool more than 30 kW per rack.

    Higher Availability

The Liebert XD solution assures continuous operation of critical IT systems under extreme heat conditions.

Designed to work with the hot aisle/cold aisledesign of raised floor applications by efficientlydrawing hot air out of equipment racks and moving cool air into the cold aisle.

The Liebert XD solution for high heat density cooling applications is a hybrid approach using a combination of floormount mission-critical cooling units and supplemental cooling from the Liebert XD Series.

Added as heat loads increase, supplemental

Liebert XD cooling capacity allows your facility

to adapt as heat loads rise allowing cooling

solutions to be added and reconfigured to react

to the changes in your environment.

Benefits of the Liebert XD approach include:

    Lowest Total Cost of Ownership

The Liebert XD targeted cooling solution is morecost-effective than increasing the overall room airconditioning capacity using floor-mounted coolingunits only.

Total energy savings potential of up to 40% can beachieved with the Liebert XD solution.

Minimal floor space requirements allow moreroom for IT equipment.

  • 6Open and Closed ArchitectureSystems as defined by ASHRAE

The open architecture systems utilize cooling coils near the heat load eitherinside or outside the open server rack andutilize the room air volume as a thermalstorage to ride through short power outages.

The closed architecture fully encloses the rack with the cooling coils inside. Other provisions are required for power loss ride through.

Liebert XD Pumped Refrigerant-BasedSystemsPumped refrigerant is ideal for use in data center environments. By eliminating the use of cooling water, it removes the chance of electrical hazards. It operates atlow pressure and becomes a gas at room temperatures, making it ideal for use around electronic equipment.

It utilizes micro-channel coil efficiency and low pressuredrop for lower operating costs. Use of pumped refrigerantalso saves space with smaller piping requirements and theability to utilize more compact heat exchangers.Pumped refrigerant is designed for medium to largecomputer rooms and data centers.

Liebert XD Water-Cooled SystemsLiebert XD water-cooled systems offer a cost-efficientcooling alternative where electrical hazards are minimal. They are also designed to work in any size space from asmall computer room to a large data center.

    A Choice Of Cooling Methods

Flexible Approaches For High Heat Density Cooling

Adding targeted cooling is more cost-efficient than trying to lower the temperature of localizedhot spots by increasing the overall room air conditioning capacity. Liebert X-treme Densitymission-critical cooling systems are specificallydesigned to address the higher heat loads generated by tightly packed electronic rack enclosures. Individual systems can improve interior air flow, cool hot air ejected from theenclosure or cool hot spots near the racks.

No one offers you more ways to meet the challenges of cooling high heat density installations

than Liebert. We offer open and closed architectures, a choice of pumped refrigerant and

water-based cooling, and the widest range of equipment configurations to meet every need

from small communications equipment closets to the largest data centers.

    The Overhead Cooling Solution

The ceiling-mounted Liebert XDO OverheadCooling Module mountsdirectly above the cold aisle. It draws in hot air from thehot aisle and then dischargescool air into the cold aislewhere the equipment airinlets are located. This energy-efficient unit takes up no floor space.

Pumping Unit Designed For Indirect ConfigurationApplications

When a building chilled water system is available, the Liebert XDPPumping Unit serves as an isolatinginterface between the buildingchilled water system and the pumpedrefrigerant circuit. It circulates refrigerant to the XD CoolingModules at a temperature alwaysabove the actual dew point to prevent condensation.

Liebert XD zone and spot cooling units are available in several configurations using

open or closed architecture and pumped refrigerant. Heat removal is provided

by either the Liebert XDC Refrigerant Chiller or a Liebert XDP Pumping Unit used in

conjunction with an existing building chilled water circuit.

The XD Solution StartsWith An InnovativePumped RefrigerantApplication

This unique application of anoff-the-shelf product makesthe Liebert XD solution veryenergy efficient. Pumpingrefrigerant as a liquid andallowing it to expand to a gasas it absorbs heat is overseven times as efficient as asingle phase fluid (water). The pumped refrigerantoperates at low pressure andbecomes a gas at roomtemperatures, making it idealfor use around electronicequipment.

    Pumped Refrigerant-Based Approach

    A Chiller DesignedFor Direct SystemConfigurations

The Liebert XDC Chiller is a speciallydesigned indoor unit that connectsdirectly to the Liebert XD CoolingModules and provides chilledpumped refrigerant circulation and control. It ensures that therefrigerant is constantly above the actual dew point in the room, eliminating concern about condensation. Available with several heat rejection options.

Liebert XD Solutions Cut Capital Costs...

The capital costs of a data center are significantly reduced as higherdensities of IT equipment are housed in smaller sized areas.

Study Data Center Cost (New Construction) 400 racks with an averageheat load of 10 kW each. Cost for building, power, cooling, lighting, fire protection, security, etc. included. Cost of land not included.

    Building 1: 80,000 sq.ft. (8000m2), 18" (450mm) Raised Floor, Designed for 50 W/sq.ft (500W/m2), Raised-floor Precision Air Conditioning units for cooling.

    Building 2: 27,000 sq.ft. (2700m2), 36" (900mm) Raised Floor. Designed for 150 W/sq.ft (1500W/m2), Raised-floor Precision Air Conditioning units for cooling.

Building 3: 10,000 sq.ft. (1000m2), 18" (450mm) Raised Floor. Designed for 400 W/sq.ft (4000W/m2), Raised-floor Precision Air Conditioning units (for basic cooling and humidity control) and Liebert XD.

Investing in a facility that utilizes a higher rack density design along with a cooling system designed especially

for this type of installation offers a significant cost savings advantage in terms of building size and energy usage.

The flexible configuration of the Liebert XD system modules also allows scalability for future growth, as well as

the ability to efficiently add redundant units for maximum reliability in the most mission-critical applications.

The Liebert XD approach significantly improves floor space utilization compared to an installation using only

floor-mounted cooling units. Because of the variety of cooling module sizes and placement, installing more XD

capacity uses little or no additional floor area.

The smaller chiller plant and lower fan load result in significant energysavings as well. A 27% energy savings is very conservative.

One of the major areas of savings identified with the use of Liebert XD equipmentis the fact that the chiller plant size can be reduced. This is because the chillertypically is sized for the total gross capacity of the raised-floor cooling units. The 65% lower fan load of the Liebert XD System modules and the fact theyare 100% sensible easily results in a capital chiller size savings of 15% or more.

    And Save Significant Energy Dollars

The Liebert XD CoolingSolution Saves Floor Space

Heres a typical example of how implementation

of the Liebert XD solution can impact life cycle

costs. The example compares two data center

layouts housing a total of 40 server racks with a

    capacity of 16 kW each.

    Raised-Floor Cooling OnlyEight 30-Ton (105 kW) Precision Air Conditioners N+2 redundancy284 Tons (998 kW) chiller plant3000 sq. ft. (300m2)

    Raised-Floor And Liebert XD CoolingTwo 20-Ton (70 kW) Precision Air Conditioners and 60 zero-footprint high heat density coolingmodules 33% redundancy182 Tons (640 kW)Chiller Plant1500 sq. ft.(150m2)

Here are two solution possibilities to be considered:The raised-floor only approach of System 1 requires eight 30 Ton (105 kW) floor-mountunits (6 primary, two redundant), 3000 sq. ft. (300 m2) of raised floor space due to theneed for 6 foot (1.8m) cold aisles to handle the air flow requirements and a 284 Ton (998 kW) chiller plant.

With the raised-floor and Liebert XD cooling solution of System 2, the facility requiresonly two 20-Ton (70 kW) floor-mount units (one primary, one redundant) in half the floor space. Even with more redundancy, the chiller plant size is cut by 30% and energyconsumption reduced by 40% per year. Here are the specifics on these numbers:

The significant energy savings achievedby the Liebert XD solution are, in greatpart, due to several factors. n The cooling units are located closer to

the load, which results in less mixing ofhot and cold air.

n The fans can be optimized for a verylow total system static pressure thanksto the micro channel coils and no pressure drop losses in ducts.

    Capital Cost Comparison

The sensible load is based on 40 racks times 16 kW each. But the chiller plant is sized tohandle the gross total capacity of the raised-floor units. Only six raised-floor units areused for this calculation, but the cooling units at the rating conditions of 72 (22 C)/50%humidity have a relatively high latent capacity requirement and the fan load needs to beadded back to the chiller load. The Liebert XD System hybrid approach requires 1/3 lesschiller plant capacity, also less diesel generator and switchgear capacity required. Aconservative estimate is a savings of over $60,000 in capital costs.

    Capital SavingsChiller at $400 / Ton = $40,000Diesel Generator / Switchgear capacity reduction 360 kW / 450 KVA =$20,000Total Savings =$60,000

Customers are also finding they do notneed to over chill their data centers to eliminate the hot spots as they have had to do with the raised-floor coolingonly approach. They no longer need the cold aisle to be 62F (17C) in someplaces to maintain the desired 70F (21C)in other areas experiencing the hotbypass air.

Liebert ChallengerUnmatched Environmental Control To Match Many Applications

  • 2When It Comes To Precision Air Conditioning,Liebert Doesnt Accept Almost

Although sensitive equipment can leave the computerroom, it cant leave the environmental protection behind.Electronics are susceptible to heat, humidity, and airbornedust and contaminants. These systems require precision air conditioning to prevent downtime due to:

Equipment shutdown or mechanical failure.Temperature fluctuations can cause equipment toexhibit random errors and premature mechanical failure.Low humidity static discharge can alter data and maydestroy electronic components.High humidity can accelerate the deterioration ofmagnetic media, cause paper to swell and jam in printers, and leads to deterioration from condensation.

The choice is simple: provide precision air conditioning or risk significant levels of downtime.

But configuration of air conditioning is not so simple.

Sensitive computer-based electronics are no longer restricted

to computer room glass house environments. Todays

    computers manage complex telecommunications networks,

optimize industrial systems, process sophisticated medical

and laboratory information, and control LANs and WANs.

  • 5Industrial Process AutomationApplications Need:

Potentially Corrosive EnvironmentsHigh Static Pressure AirDischarge RequirementsHigh Air Filtration Requirements

On the factory floor, you need a cooling system thatsdependable and tough. Tough enough to withstand the corrosive environments, and tough enough to supply continuous air flow in ducted applications. The Liebert Challenger answers all this with a MIG welded steelframe surrounded by insulated heavy gauge steel panels.

    Computer Room Applications Need:

24 Hour Per Day/365 Days Per Year OperationUnderfloor Air DischargeHigh Sensible Heat Ratio1800-3000 C.F.M. Air DischargeHigh Energy Efficiency Requirements

On a square foot basis, computer rooms generate up to five times the heat of normal office space. And theyrequire higher than normal air handling requirements to reduce hot spots. The Liebert Challenger is designedto handle this load efficiently with a high sensible heatratio and an air delivery system capable of 1800-3000C.F.M. Because most computer rooms use a raised floorfor air circulation and cable management, the LiebertChallenger can be specified with underfloor air discharge. This reduces the turbulence created by competing warm and cold air streams.

  • 6Front Access For EasyMaintenanceAll interior components are frontaccessible to simplify maintenanceand reduce the floorspace that mustbe kept open.

Stable and QuietA MIG welded steel frame provides a solid platform for the internal components. Units incorporate avibration-isolated fan deck whichreduces noise and vibration transmission to any connected ductwork. The heavy gaugepanels/heavy duty gaskets option provides upgraded protection, popular in industrial and/or high static applications.

Corrosion ResistantThe frame and exterior panels are powder coated and baked, a solvent-free process that is not onlyenvironmentally safe, but produces an attractive, durable finish.

Precise Humidity ControlThe Infrared Humidifier has been a feature on Liebert environmentalcontrol systems for over 25 years. Its rapid response and cleanliness has made it an industry standard in applications that demand precise, particle-free humidity control.

More Benefits And Higher Quality...Trademarks Of A Liebert System

An Autoflush System reduces thebuildup of mineral solids and reducesmaintenance time. If your applicationcalls for a Steam-GeneratingHumidifier, Liebert can respond. The disposable canister makes maintenance quick and easy.

High Performance Coolingand Heating ComponentsAn A-Frame Evaporator Coil exposes more coil surface to the airthat passes through it. This not onlyprovides a more rapid and preciseresponse to changing room conditions, but it reduces the horsepower requirements of the fan motor, saving energy.

The 304/304 Stainless Steel, FinnedTube Reheat, like the evaporator coil,is designed to maximize surface area. This allows lower sheath temperatures, reducing the likelihood of ionizationthat could trip fire detection equipment, and more precisely controlling room temperature during dehumidification. The reheat coils are constructed ofstainless steel for corrosion resistanceand long life.

An optional SCR-Controlled Reheat is available that provides infinite response levels to changingroom temperatures.

Year-Round DependabilityAnd Energy EfficiencyA rugged and quiet ScrollCompressor is at the heart of therefrigeration system. It operates atone of the highest EERs in the industry, 11.3.

Air cooled systems with outdoorcondenser can operate between -30 and +120F (-34 and 49C).Water and glycol cooled systems feature a coaxial condenser and regulating valves that can be adjusted to meet the capabilities of the site.

All Components From OneManufacturerLiebert is the only manufacturer in thecomputer support industry that buildsits own condensers and drycoolers. They feature aluminum cabinets andcopper-tube, aluminum-fin coils, andare built to precisely match the heatrejection requirements of the LiebertChallenger .

  • 7The GLYCOOL system is a patentedLiebert process that allows colder

    outdoor temperatures to reduce or

    eliminate compressor operation.

    This not only reduces operating

    costs,it increases reliability.

How it works:When outdoor temperatures are

    above room temperature, the

    GLYCOOL Liebert Challenger

    functions as a normally-cooled

    system. But when outdoor

    temperatures fall below room

    temperatures, the glycol that

    circulates between the condenser

    and drycooler becomes cold

enough to provide some or all

    of the rooms cooling needs.

The cold glycol is redirected to a

    supplemental cooling coil by means

    of a microprocessor controlled valve.

    During outdoor temperatures

    below 45F (7.2C), the circulating

    glycol can provide the same

    cooling capacity as the mechanical

    refrigeration system.
