Page 16: LIBRARY & RESEARCH SKILLS
Page 17: LIBRARY & RESEARCH SKILLS

Start your research ► Get background information – Internet,

encyclopedias, books…

Get research reports & tune into the issues and debates - electronic databases (‘e-resources’) for journal & newspaper articles , Internet (selected sites)…

Need to revise your topic?

Once you have done some searching, you may find that you will need to revise your

topicPossible Reasons: You can’t find publications on your topic Your topic is discussed, but not in the way you

expected Your topic is too general – you discover that it has too

many aspects (‘sub-topics’) to handle in one essay You see a lot of material on a related aspect that you

find more interesting and/or more practical

About databases & journal articles…

Databases:Licensed electronic

resources - many let you search tens of thousands of articles at one time

Journals: Published in issues

regularly (weekly, monthly, etc.)

Each issue contains several articles (essays) by different authors

Page 43: LIBRARY & RESEARCH SKILLS

About databases & the Internet – what’s the

difference…? Internet Quality varies widely Inherent commercial bias Huge Limited user search tools

Databases (E-resources) More academic info, more

consistent reliable quality Commercial free Big Precision tools for searching

A look into the Internet’s future…? Today, the Internet is

governed, in large part, by a private corporation It’s called the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, a California-based non-profit that handles tasks such as approving domain suffixes such as .ca for Canada, as well as other technical and policy issues…

Page 92: LIBRARY & RESEARCH SKILLS

A look into the Internet’s future…? However, the next billion

people to hop on the Internet will be from places such as Nairobi and Mumbai, not California. And increasingly, governments are pushing to replace ICANN – a group historically aligned with the U.S. Dept. of Commerce – with a UN-style body in which multiple nations have a direct say in how the Internet is run. A clear front-runner has emerged: the United Nations International Telecommunications Union

At the ITU’s most recent conference [Oct 2010]…Russian delegates proposed a motion that would see ICANN’s government advisory council replaced with a UN-approved body. The move was seen as a first attempt to shift control away from ICANN and toward emerging powers such as Russia and China.
