Hello, Healthy People 2020 recommend that adults get 30 minutes of physical activity per day and 150 minutes per week of moderate activity while kids need a total of 60 minutes per day. Just like the three bears, during the summer we use the excuse it’s too hot, and now with fall here it will be too cold, and in Kentucky the weather changes so much there isn’t a lot of just right weather! Now is the time to start looking for things to do during cold weather to keep us physically active and healthy during the colder weather. Resistance bands, balls and chair exercises are good way to get exercise as demonstrated at the Rowan County Library by Happy Raffaele, SNAP-Ed Assistant in Anderson County. Until next time, Lora Gullett, Area Agent Rachel Price, SNAP-Ed Program Assistant (606-776-3903) [email protected] [email protected]
Healthy Choices Mondays and Thursday Edgewater Recovery
Healthy Choices Tuesday and Fridays at Blue Sky Recovery Healthy Choices Wednesday 10:00 AM Pathways Look for announcements of new classes starting in the schools.
If it too cold out try walking indoors, try the new community center in the Laughlin Building on campus or many like to use the Wetherby Gym. Bundling up and walking outside actually burns more calories and Morehead-Rowan County has lots of places to walk. The new Downtown Walking Trail starts where our office is located with the Visitor Center and the Chamber of Commerce. You can find a map for the trail located at the side of the building. Rodburn Hollow Park received the Beautify the Bluegrass Commonwealth Award so check it out. Stop in the Visitor’s Center for maps of the Cave Run Lake Trails and the Sheltowee Trace Trails in Rowan County.
Exercise classes are being offered at Laughlin like Zumba and Yoga, or just get some friends together for a game of basketball or volleyball. The important thing is to just stay active! Exercise decreases our chance of developing chronic diseases like heart disease and diabetes. Exercise helps with anxiety and depression. Strong muscles and flexibility helps protects against falls and injury, so keep moving Rowan County either indoors or outside!

October 12Saturday 5-7pm Author Misty Skaggs
Join CoffeeTree as we welcome Misty Skaggs.Planted by the Signs brings us the contemporary Appalachian poetry—cultivated in the dirt of Elliott County, Kentucky—of Misty Skaggs. With an eye for details that exquisitely balance personal and social observation to communicate volumes, she tells the stories of generations of women who have learned to navigate a harsh world with a little help from the Farmers’ Alma-nac and the stars. The collection is separated into three sections that reference the best times to grow and harvest. Knowing and following these guidelines—planting by the signs—could mean the difference between prosperity and tragedy in the lives of Appalachian families.
Personal, political, and passionate, Planted by the Signs also explores what it means for Skaggs to care for her great-grand-mother at the end of her life. Color photos by the poet further showcase her sidelong and fierce outlook. The images and po-ems together deliver an intimate look into the day-to-day reality of a backwoods woman embracing barefooted radicalism in the only place she could call home.
Misty Skaggs was born and raised in the backwoods of Eastern Kentucky. She still lives in and works from a holler in Elliott County, where she tends to her poetry, her Mamaw, and her garden. Skaggs is an artist and activist as well as an author and editor, and her Appalachian roots are tightly entangled with all of her work. Open to all.
