Challenge Quilt 2015 - Theme “Illumination”Quiltwest is over and the closing date for Ellenbrookexhibition is gone, so now you can get down tocompleting a Challenge Quilt. You may interpret thetheme using any of the myriad definitions. Examples:light, embellishment, bright idea, lamp, sunlight . . .
Your challenge quilt should be no bigger than 50cmx 70cm and may be any style, traditional, modern,contemporary, improvisational. Showcase yourpersonal style or use the opportunity to test-run a newtechnique. The deadline is 31 October. Email yourname, contact details, quilt title and quilt inspirationto Meg Cowey at [email protected] the year the Challenge Quilts are exhibited atvarious country shows and patchwork clubs aroundthe state in addition to making an impressive displayat QuiltWest.
Library News
Our librarian Pam Richardson and I recently spenttime culling the library shelves of several old books tomake room for new ones.
This means we will be having a book sale at our Julysewing night and sewing day. Do come along andget yourself a bargain. Proceeds will go towards thepurchase of new library books. Please remembersewing night is before sewing day this month.

Ellenbrook Exhibition Judy Campbell
I hope you will all take the time to check yourdiaries so that you can take part in the roster forhandquilting our signature quilt at this Exhibitionopening at Ellenbrook on Sunday August 9 th.We are hoping to have members in attendanceas often as possible to demonstrate simple handquilting and to invite visitors to ‘have a go’.Look for the Roster at July Sewing Night and JulySewing Day.
The Ellenbrook Art Gallery is located directlyopposite the Dome Cafe with many other smalleateries being nearby. Maybe your sewinggroup could arrange a days outing to visit thiswonderful exhibition.

Prepare yourself mentally for sewing. Think about what you are going to do. Never approach sewing with asigh or lackadaisacally. Good results are difficult when indifference predominates.
Never try to sew with a sink full of dirty dishes or beds unmade. When there are urgent housekeeping chores,do those first so your mind is free to enjoy your sewing.
When you sew, make yourself as attractive as possible. Go through a beauty ritual of orderliness. Have on aclean dress. Be sure your hands are clean, finger nails smooth — a nail file and pumice will help. Always avoidhangnails. Keep a little bag full of French chalk near your sewing machine where you can pick it up and dustyour fingers at intervals. This not only absorbs the moisture on your fingers, but helps to keep your work clean.Have your hair in order, powder and lipstick put on with care.
Looking attractive is a very important part of sewing, because if you are making something for yourself, youwill try it on at intervals in front of your mirror, and you can hope for better results when you look your best. Ifyou are constantly fearful that a visitor will drop in or your husband will come home and you will not look neatlyput together, you will not enjoy your sewing as you should.

Community Quilts Gwen Parry
Jan Reid will be demonstrating a must-see, clevertechnique at sewing day / night for the Block of theMonth. Please don’t forget to bring back June’sDrunkards path blocks .Despite having a very successful June CQ BEE,(thankyou to all those who attended! ) we only have a fewquilts ready for binding and quilting but we do havekits to make breastcare(post mastectomy) bags. Theladies from Mukinbudin have asked for our helpmaking these bags as they cannot keep up withdemand.The June sewing day/night raffle raised $570 forOxfam/ Nepal’s earthquake relief .The quilt was handquilted and generously donated by Charlotte Weltonand was won by lucky Marion Tiggerdine. Thanks toWAQA members for supporting this worthy cause. I will be away for July and August but will still monitorthe emails to [email protected] but ifyou have any urgent queries please contact Lesley on0407991047 or Prue at sewing day/ night. Due to vacations, absences and prior commitments,the CQ team is low on resources in August and theusual major mayhem will be a half day short, sharp andhopefully sweet soiree!!!!We will be busy finishing projects, preparing backingsand bindings, with wadding to be done for at least tenquilts.Whilst we will need busy fingers, it would be great toknow who is coming to be able to match some newladies up with experienced personnel!!Please let Lesley Warren (0407991047 [email protected]) know if you are able toattend – and if you would like to to help set up or dropdown tables that would be FANTASTIC!!!!!!!!
