School Conspiracy ExposedBy: Bob Schaffer, Headmaster

NEWS FLASH: A group of Liberty Common School students claims it has discovered newevidence confirming the existence of what it describes as an active, school-wide mind-control conspiracy. The students, whose identities are being withheld due to their age, claim they now have incontrovertible proof they, and all Liberty students, are beingmanipulated by a well-organized cabal of agents who use classical conditioningtechniques to shape their thoughts, habits, even their perspectives of the world aroundthem.

Effects of the COVID-19 pandemic havenecessitated moving Liberty’s educationplatform to students’ homes from theschool’s classrooms; and, in the process, the students say, an intricate web ofteacher-parent coordination has beenlaid bare. Students assert the elaborateconspiracy is being directed throughshadowy back offices of the school’sadministration, and carried out throughforward-operating bureaus of supportstaff.

“This school has secretly plotted a complete, unfair advantage for itself. It’s diabolical –which means devilish, if you didn’t know,” said “Mary,” an appalled sixth grader. “I alwaysthought Liberty’s top academic performance happened because of grammar launches,Singapore Math, and Latin.”

But after spending the past three weeks at home learning online, Mary now says she’srealizing her parents and teachers have been conspiring all along to make her memorizespecific things, usually when she’s unaware she’s even learning. “Look, I’ve called out myparents like three times this week for totally taking the side of my teacher. ‘Pay attention.’‘Finish your project.’ ‘Let’s read another chapter together.’ They just keep making me learnthings they think are important. I mean, like, where’s the justice?” Another member of the group, “Bruce” from Ms. Manthei’s fourth-grade class, said hisfriends Micah and Spencer who attend a different school are not being pushed sohard. “They aren’t being graded on anything,” he complained. “They got an extra week ofSpring Break, they can skip online classes whenever they want, and they don’t get introuble for it.”

Bruce says the inequity is becomingunbearable, and he doesn’t know howmuch longer he can take it. “While theywere out there building snow fortsyesterday, my mom was in here drilling meon math facts! I couldn’t go outside until Igot everything right, and by then, they hadan arsenal of snowballs. I got summarilyvanquished – which means totallydefeated, if you didn’t know; and, anarsenal means a stored supply ofweapons.”

High-school junior “Amy” says evidence of the conspiracy is overwhelming. “Apparently, all this teacher-parent coordination has been happening right under our noses sincekindergarten. They email each other all the time, they have social-media pages, aninteractive website, a YouTube channel, they have teacher-parent conferences whichwe’re not allowed to attend, cameras all over the place. Oh snap, they even have a bigelegant annual soirée! – that means a luxurious party, if you didn’t know. They get alldressed up, yuk it up with live music and dancing, and they talk about us all night

Page 3: Liberty Common Sensep13cdn4static.sharpschool.com/UserFiles/Servers/Server...Liberty Common School has joined forces with Neenan Archistruction, and other local businesses to fabricate

long. Oh, and we’re pretty sure some of our teachers drink margaritas there, Mr.Skerjanec for sure.”

Amy said student leaders at the high school brieflyconsidered presenting evidence of their conspiracy theory, and a petition of grievances to the school’s Board ofDirectors. “But then we thought, wait, they’re all parents. Imean, they’ve got the whole administration and faculty intheir back pocket, and it’s been like that for years. Thewhole system has been rigged from the beginning.”

As further proof, Amy added, “On Fridays, Mr. Lovely, andMr. Churchill report everything back to the parentsthrough a newsletter sardonically called ‘Liberty CommonSense.’ So, that pretty much tells you everything you needto know right there. They’re definitely out to shape ourfutures; and we’re powerless to stop them.”

Students interviewed for this report say they’ll continuecollecting evidence about the conspiracy, and if there’s no

relief soon, they’ll consider taking the story to the press. Stay tuned.

Update from LCS Theatre Department

The Show Must Virtually Go On! When we began preparing for our theatrical performances months ago, we could neverhave known the way COVID-19 would impact our jobs, the education of our children, ourdaily lives, or the theater program at Liberty Common School. We - your directors andpartners in these productions - are filled with gratitude for your patience, flexibility andgrace as we have maneuvered through a brand-new, always-changing season. Looking to our three Spring productions - Arsenic and Old Lace, Annie, and The MadAdventures of Mr. Toad - we have agonized to find balance between fulfilling the hardwork and dedication of our students, and their health and safety. We’ve determined itwould be irresponsible to move forward with live productions for the 2019-2020 schoolyear. However, to simply cancel would be crushing to our students who have put so muchtime, energy and heart into preparation for a production. As such, we are pursuing virtual alternatives to the live performances which will beorganized, completed and distributed before the end of the 2019-2020 school year. Eachproduction will be taking a slightly different approach to this challenge, and you shouldlook for additional communication from your director(s) regarding the details of your

performance. The theater world is full of challenges – problems to solve, plots to untangle, characters tounderstand. This is no different. The task of carrying a stage performance onto a virtualplatform will be challenging, and exciting, and humorous, and something you willremember for the rest of your lives. This is what we, as directors of the Liberty CommonSchool Theater Company, are striving for. Thank you for your commitment, flexibility, andjoy as we journey into a new place. -Your Elementary, Junior-High & High-School Theater Directors

Medical Face-Shield Project. Liberty Common School has joined forces with NeenanArchistruction, and other local businesses to fabricate medical face shields. The deviceshave become scarce due to the coronavirus pandemic, and hospitals are in need ofmore. The project entails four people running nine 3-D printers around the clock, includingLiberty’s 3-D machines. A second team of five work to cut material and punch holes tocreate the visor. This effort is being orchestrated by Neenan employees workingalongside LCHS engineering instructor, Mrs. Kay Lannen. Materials have been providedby Neenan with the help of funds collected from the LCHS Key Club, and through personaldonations. Within the first two weeks, the project has already produced and distributedover 475 shields. Cool video and photos are posted at the school’s website -- CLICKHERE. Anyone interested in donating to the cause should contact Neenan Archistruction.

The Green family (Tiffany, Riley, Patrick, and Ryan) tests out a batch of assembledface shields. These shields were deliveredfor use by surgeons in Northern Colorado.

(#LibertyCommonUnited), and stronger than ever.

If you’ve ever had the privilege of volunteering in a kindergarten classroom, you may befamiliar with the oral phonemic awareness activities daily engaged by our youngestscholars. With careful attention to the teacher’s verbal instruction, students isolate andmanipulate sounds in a call-and-response format that is efficient, effective, and…adorable. Say “beam.” Change /b/ to /t/ and the word is? TEAM!

The BOD recently approved a formal curriculum to better support the literacy skills ofhearing and manipulating sounds. “Explicit, systematic phonemic awareness and phonicsinstruction” is a stated goal of our formal literacy policy (CLICK HERE to view the LCSPolicies Manual, updated 4/13/20), so these classroom activities are not new. However, asequential, comprehensive resource utilized across grades K-2 is a welcome improvementfor our students and teachers. Heggerty’s phonemic-awareness program will complementRigg’s phonics instruction. Learn more about this evidence-based curriculum atHeggerty.org. Be sure to thank Liberty’s professional educators and the AcademicSupport Team for their commitment to developing competent readers and spellers.

Have you ever wanted the privilege of a behind-the-scenes glimpse of any of thewonderful academic departments at Liberty? If so, pull up a chair (or pick up the phoneduring the current “Stay-At-Home” situation) and join us at a BOD meeting to hear arotation of in-depth department reports. You are always welcome.

Most recently, the Art Department shared highlights of its year including examples acrossall grade levels of the pursuit of truth, goodness, and beauty through the study ofart. Beauty is more than mere sentimentality at Liberty! Thanks to the innovative efforts ofthese dedicated instructors, elementary-art students now tackle weekly art challengesfrom home, and LCHS students continue to engage in meaningful studio-art projectsoutside the classroom. Interested, but can’t make it to a meeting? All BOD actions aredetailed in the minutes each month and may be found under the BOD tab on the schoolwebsite (CLICK HERE to BOD tab on website).

Noteworthy Updates About College

This week’s senior spotlight is Tianxin Luo. Tianxin had her sight set on an Ivy Leaguecollege since middle school. Her dream is now a reality, as she will be attending theUniversity of Pennsylvania this fall. Her level of impact in the community outside of schoolclubs is impressive and she has also chosen rigorous coursework throughout her high-school experience. Congratulations Tianxin!

“I chose UPenn because it provides a great opportunity for me to apply to medical school. With its renowned education and various resources and opportunities, I will be able toconduct research and have great volunteering experience on top of studying all mycourses. I'm planning on pursuing a degree in biochemistry and conducting at least oneresearch project in Penn. I'll continue my community service in the hospitals near Penn.Besides preparing for my career, I wish to meet some inspiring people and use this vibrantand inclusive environment to expand and enhance my own view and life.

Here’s what Lily Wilson had to say about her friend Tianxin, “ Tianxin is one of thesweetest people you will ever meet. She lights up the room with a contagious energy, making all of her friends laugh and smile. I myself always end up with a big, goofy grinacross my face each time I talk with her. Moreover, she is incredibly thoughtful andgenerous, always trying to make her friends feel special by leaving cute notes and gifts inour lockers, or spoiling us with candy and treats. You can tell that she is constantly thinkingof new ways to make the people she cares about happy. But more than that, Tianxin isdedicated and hard working, only settling for the best; she pushes herself, and sheencourages others to do the same. Personally, she has motivated me to join leadershipand has inspired me to speak at lyceums. Tianxin is such an amazing person and friend, and I feel so lucky to have her in my life. She has made the last few years of my high-school experience so much brighter. I can't wait to see all the fantastic things she willachieve at UPenn and beyond.“

From the 1934 high-school textbook"Good Manners" used in "HouseholdScience" class of that day:

“Rule No. 106. Invitations. For the largertea, invitations are sent out as suggested inChapter III, Invitations. Often, Camp FireGirls, Girl Scouts, or a Sunday School groupwill give a tea at the club room or at aprivate home. A written invitation should beused in preference to the telephonedinvitation. The group decides on the type of

Alumni Update From Arjun Gill, LCHS ’14,University of Colorado ‘19

Page 12: Liberty Common Sensep13cdn4static.sharpschool.com/UserFiles/Servers/Server...Liberty Common School has joined forces with Neenan Archistruction, and other local businesses to fabricate

Having recently completed a second season coaching basketball at his high-school almamater, LCHS alumnus Arjun Gill (LCHS ’14) definitely feels at home in the LCHSColosseum. “I love being on the court, and I love working with the kids,” he said in a recentinterview.

A 2019 University of Colorado graduate, Gill is a medical-billing specialist, and loves hisjob, too. “I like being able to help people. I grew up in a healthcare family. The opportunitywas there, and I’m really enjoying what I’m doing so far.”

He majored in political science, minored insociology, and earned a certificate ofbusiness, and certificate of publichealth. Next, he plans to pursue a Master’sDegree in health administration.

Arjun was first of three Gill siblings to walkacross the LCHS graduation stage (Nisha‘15, and Mira ’17). His father Dr. Sarj Gillserved on the Liberty Board of Directors, and his mom Falu was a regular volunteerfixture in the school. Supporting Liberty

Common School logically became a Gill-family affair. It still is.

“It’s been a blessing being able to come back to the school I played at, a program I helpedbuild, and where I can continue helping student athletes,” Arjun said. “Liberty is a uniqueschool in a sense because the academics are challenging. That makes a student-athlete’sjob much tougher than at other schools.”

That distinction, plus Gill’s personal experience, translates into instant courtside credibilityfor the young coach to which players naturally gravitate. “I think it’s been helpful to thestudent-athletes for me to give them my two cents on their situation having gone through itmyself pretty recently,” Gill said. “I can coach them on getting their homework done, andprioritizing their time, and helping them manage it.”

In his first year guiding the mighty Eagles, Gill was head coach for the C-team, andassistant coach for the varsity. This past season, his second, he was the junior-varsity andC-team head coach, and a varsity-team assistant.

“I really enjoy the game. I miss playing. It’s nice to help the next generation of guys growup, help them get better at basketball, and help them develop skills they can use in school, college, and later in life.”

Page 13: Liberty Common Sensep13cdn4static.sharpschool.com/UserFiles/Servers/Server...Liberty Common School has joined forces with Neenan Archistruction, and other local businesses to fabricate

But the most important things Gill wants his players to learn from him are not limited tobasketball. “It’s discipline, attention to detail, and effort,” he explained. “If players give theirmaximum effort out there, then they find themselves on the court a lot. With some players,it takes them awhile to get there – I was one of those players back in the day.”

Players on Gill’s teams are indeed rewarded for effort. “You might not be the best-skilledplayer out there,” he explained, “but if you give maximum effort – let’s say on defense, youdo the right things, you understand the plays, and you play for the team – you’ll findyourself on the court a lot. That’s one of the key things I want our players to understand.”

Sounding, now, more like a philosopher than a coach, Gill waxed sagacious, “Givingmaximum effort is really a life skill. In life, there will always probably be people who aresmarter than you; but, you can make up for that through giving maximum effort. It’s alesson sports does a really great job of teaching. Sometimes, lessons like that can’t belearned in a classroom.”

A good coach, Gill says, keeps his eyes on his players’horizons. “Being able to coach at Liberty, you get a lot of kidswho are mature beyond their age, which is definitely a goodthing. There are a lot of bright young men out there, and I justwant to keep them on the straight path, and help them grow.”

Gill’s players obviously warm to his coaching style, and to hisheart. Watching his team in action, any fan can tell Coach Gillis in his element, and that his players admire, and respecthim. “You know,” he said through one of his Arjun-brandedhalf-smirk/half-smiles, “I really, really enjoy being able to giveback like that.”

Gill clearly cares about his players, and harbors high hopes for their futures beyond highschool. “It’s the number-one thing – helping the kids grow and develop. Their basketballskills are at the core of the sport, but I’m really helping teenagers become young men.”
