A Message from the PresidentI am delighted to welcome all members, friends and visitors to Leverstock Green Cricket Club for the 01 season. The 011 season was one of mixed fortunes for the club. Although there were many successful aspects to the season, it is undeniable that the league season was disappointing for the teams with only Mike Parkes’s 3rd Eleven recording more victories than defeats. Consequently, we have carefully analysed what needs to be done and, via our newly formed Cricket

Strategy Committee, have put into place some exciting plans for the new season. It is also encouraging that we have so many young players coming through and as well as nurturing them in our youth teams, we are anticipating that a significant number of them will progress to our senior teams, where we aim that they will be retained as valuable players into the future. However, 011 did encompass a number of highlights. The 1st Eleven had an excellent run in the prestigious Gazette Cup reaching the final after taking a number of prized scalps on the way. It was a campaign that began with a thrilling last ball victory at Little Gaddesden, courtesy of Imran’s steely nerve and strength to hit the last delivery for four. We managed to negotiate with the competition organisers so that the venue for the final could be changed to our ground as it was due to be played on the Friday of our Cricket Week. And so, the final was staged at our beautiful ground on a sunny early evening in front of a large crowd, which was entertained to an enthralling, high standard cricket match. Our vaunted opponents, Tring Park, who were brought home to win by their stand-out overseas player – just, were very complimentary to us in victory and were very impressed with the ambience of cricket at the Green. We also hosted during Cricket Week the British Army Team, described by their Manager and Coach as “ the highest paid cricket team in the country “, who also enjoyed their cricket and social experiences at Leverstock Green. For good measure, over £000 was raised for the “Help for Heroes “ Charity, one of our major charities of the year. Our thanks go to Nick Taylor who had a major part in organising the match. For me personally, it was one of the best-ever Cricket Weeks that I can remember and I am

grateful to all who contributed to its success and, especially, to Mike Parkes, who co-ordinated the activities and to Harold Rylott, our 011 Faulkner Trophy winner. Socially, the Club thrived again and great credit and gratitude should go to Claire Heath, Steve Wright, their helpers and many supporters. One of the great occasions of the year was on 9th April, the day when Will married Kate, when our cricket club brought together all sections of the Leverstock Green community on a gorgeous, “golden“ day! The Green was adorned with many colourful gazebos fringing the perimeter of the cricket field. There was music and laughter, a Hog Roast was enjoyed and the health of the young, married couple was dutifully toasted, in copious quantities. A cricket match graced the festivities, showing that cricket is a timeless, unifying feature of our village community. The Club also continued in its mission to support people less fortunate and, as well as the “Help the Heroes“ charity, the club also raised money for the British Heart Foundation and the Hospice of St. Francis. The Annual Dinner and Dance was held again at the Bobsleigh Hotel at Bovingdon. It was an enjoyable event and it was pleasing to see a greater number of cricketers in attendance. Again thanks must go to Claire Heath and her team for organising a really classy occasion. The management of the club is in very good hands and we welcomed back club stalwarts to occupy important positions. Tony Humphrey has taken on the role of Treasurer and Mike Wood as Club Captain and already these legends of LGCC are making a very positive impact. Planning and preparations for the new season have gone well during the Winter. The Cricket Strategy Committee under the effervescent leadership of its Chairman, Steve Murphy has prepared well for the 01 campaign. Both new and old sponsors have committed themselves to back Leverstock Cricket Club and the early signs are promising. More than anything, it is to be hoped that this solid infrastructure, which many people have worked hard to establish will provide a springboard for the cricket season. I anticipate that our younger, our more experienced players and our newcomers will combine to play good cricket, have fun and enhance the reputation of Leverstock Green Cricket Club. I wish you all an enjoyable season.

A Message from the Club CaptainMy first year back as Club Captain was one of mixed emotions. There were some highlights as our President has recalled in his welcome and some moments that I'm glad to put behind us. I am encouraged by the way everyone has pulled together during the winter and I am really excited for the forthcoming season. We are pleased to welcome back Alex King as our overseas player for 01 and we also

have another Australian, Luke Roberts, joining us from Perth. These, together with a few new players will strengthen all sides considerably, ready for the new campaign.David Coulshed will again lead the 1st XI and I'm sure the experiences gained in his first season as captain will be put to good use. After many years starring with bat and ball for the 1st XI, David Tyson has decided it is time to put his considerable talents to good use leading the nd XI and I wish him every success with a mixture of experience and younger players. Running the Third and Fourth XI's is always difficult as availability is never consistent. Mike Parkes and Mark Pearson will be looking for more consistency from their teams as we add players at all levels.Junior cricket at the Club remains strong under the leadership of Brad Klosterman. Many people put a lot of time in to support our many junior teams. Without their support we would not have a Club with such a bright future. We have a mixture of new blood on the Cricket Committee as well as plenty of experience. It is important that we keep looking for new talent to take us forward as a Club.We have a new groundsman for the coming year. Neil Wray has done an incredible job over a number of years but has decided to hang up his besom. Our thanks go to Neil as we welcome Mark Hobley into the role.I wish everyone: players, umpires, scorers, supporters, tea persons, bar staff, ground staff and all other members, an enjoyable and successful 01 season.

Leverstock Green Junior Cricket011 saw an increase in junior numbers and a learning curve for our younger members. The coaches saw a vast

improvement as the season went on and are expecting great things in 01. The club has plenty of talented youngsters and we should see a return to the levels of recent years. The 01 season will see the club field 9 teams in the Herts Junior League. This

is a record for the club and will see us running teams in Under 10 (3 teams), 11, 13, 14, 15, 16 and 17.We have strengthened our qualified coaching staff this season with Matt Lake, Sam Revell and Tom Callingham all completing their Level One during the winter. I would like to give special thanks to all the coaches who give up their time for the club. Finally, 01 will be the busiest yet with some exciting and successful cricket to be watched. I look forward to seeing all the parents who come along and support and wish all our junior cricketers a thoroughly enjoyable and successful season.

Short History of Leverstock Green Cricket Club

The game of cricket was first played on a regular basis in Leverstock Green during the 190’s, though its formation can be traced back to 1908. Matches were played on farmland off Pancake Lane for some years, then, when the land was needed, the Club moved a short distance to Cherry Tree Lane.

The team, consisting mainly of members of the village, played regular Saturday matches until the end of the 1939 season, when, due to the outbreak of the Second World War, it was reluctantly forced to disband.

It was not until 1958, almost twenty years later, that several players from those early days, together with local residents both old and new, managed to persuade the authorities to allow the ground as we know it today to be used as a cricket pitch. This then became the new home of Leverstock Green Cricket Club.

Only one eleven played at this time, with a fixture list for both Saturday and Sunday games.

In 1964 a second eleven was formed and over the years increasing membership enabled the Club to field three regular elevens within the Hertfordshire Cricket League. A regular fourth XI was formed in 005 and joined Division Thirteen of the Herts League two years later.

The Club can also boast successful junior sides. As the Club moved into the new millennium, juniors as young as seven were encouraged to join in. Through the dedication and hard work of a number of senior members and players, the Club currently runs junior sides across five age groups.

The Club continues to move from strength to strength with a dedicated committee and strong band of volunteers. The whole Club can be proud of what we have achieved.

With well over 300 members, a thriving social membership and excellent facilities we have come a long way from the early days in Pancake Lane!

LGCC Cycling Club - Our Year 2011Once again our annual London to Brighton cycle ride was well supported with over £000 raised by the riders for the British Heart Foundation. Many thanks to all who sponsored us.The ride this year is on Sunday 17th June and if you would like to show your support for the team then please feel free to plan a day out in Brighton and see us cross the finish line in a peloton like formation.

In 011 we undertook a slightly less demanding ride than our Hemel Hempstead to Paris sortie of 010 . . . we rode to Amsterdam via some of Holland’s best costal towns starting at the Hook

of Holland passing through The Hague, Katwijk aan Zee, Nordwijk aan Zee crossing into North Holland through Zandvoort to Haarlem and then onto our main destination Amsterdam.Amsterdam was our day off, but we managed to hire bikes and wear our LGCC cycling shirts and some dashing headgear for a wonderful day’s cycling and sight seeing around the city, which even included an interview for three of us on Ajax TV! The next day we cycled south to Delft where we spent a wonderful evening rehydrating ready for our ride back to the Hook of Holland and the ferry home.We meet most Sunday mornings at the club during the spring and summer. If you feel inclined to join us for a training ride then you can meet us at the club around 9.30 a.m.Once again thanks to LGCC and all the members for supporting our London to Brighton Heart Foundation charity rides.
