Why we chose our topicsAnthony: I chose the topic of LGBTIQA+ in Law Enforcement because besides being a Criminal Justice Major this is one of my possible career paths. I also wanted to see how LGBT Law Enforcement Officers are treated.Jacob: I chose the topic of LGBTIQA+ Community and Law Enforcement because I wanted to see just how LGBTIQA+ Members are being treated by members of Law Enforcement also I have always had an interest in psychology ever since I took a course in High School.

Anthony: LGBTIQA+ in Law EnforcementLGBTIQA+ Police Officers have to face the challenge everyday of working in a predominantly heterosexual, male career field. Many police departments around the world have LGBTIQA+ Officers. Numbers and support for LGBTIQA+ officers depend on a countrys LGBTIQA+ Demographics.

Offs. Shawn Maclver (L) and his partner James Moccia (R) made history in Boston, MA by becoming the first openly gay couple to become officers of BPD

Sr. Officer Greg Abbink is Austin, TXs first Transgendered Officer. Abbink born as Emily

LGBTIQA+ Police OfficersFor the most part, LGBTIQA+ officers say they are accepted at work by their fellow officers and supervisors. But there have been some cases in which supervisors or even chief department officials will fire an employee if they find out if they are LGBTIQA+. As a result, that officer will have to sue their former employer in court for wrongful firing, which can take a long time.In 2013, a Gay former LAPD Sergeant received $1.5 million for discrimination that he suffered on the job. There have been numerous court cases that involve LGBTIQA+ Officers in one event an officer was thrown against a concrete wall as well as a dispatcher refusing to send back-up which puts that officers life in danger.

Discussion Time/Questions ?Do you think Police/State/Sheriff Departments across the US and worldwide should recruit more LGBTIQA+ identified people to have a diverse department as well as to help society get over homophobia?Do you think it is fair the LGBTIQA+ Police Officers are losing their jobs because they are different? How can we change these statistics of police brutality in the LGBTIQA+ Community?Any Questions?
