Finally, an all-embracing community ethosmeans ‘doing good’ doesn’t stop at thenursery door, as our multi-generational andpartnership-led approach helps to enrichthe natural strength and qualities of eachlocal community we serve.

Who we are

With our unique and socially inclusiveapproach, we make a real difference tothe lives of more than 2,300 children andtheir parents every year, helping themdevelop a passion for learning, regardlessof their background. We are also committed to helpingdisadvantaged young adults realise theirown potential. Every year we recruitaround 20 people to our Early Yearsapprenticeship scheme, which developstheir vocational and interpersonal skills, leads to a Diploma for the Children &Young People’s Workforce, and offers theopportunity to start their career inchildcare with LEYF.

Our history and values

Over 100 years before the first officialChildren’s Centre and an incredible 45years before the NHS, we were alreadypioneers – offering training in professionalchildcare, outreach and home visits, along with local drop-in sessions andclasses in parenting.

We are passionate about the long-termsocial impact that comes from combining aprogressive and research-based nurseryeducation with the creation of social andcultural capital. We ensure that our corevalues influence everything we do.

Our ambitions remain as clear today aswhen we began: to build a better futurefor London’s children, families and localcommunities through a commitment toExcellence in Early Years education, training and research.

Our 5 core values

Child focusedWe place the child at the centre of all we do

CollaborativeWe invite and consult with children, parents, staff and supporters

CreativeWe are inventive and innovative, regularlychallenging what already exists

CourageousWe are able to push boundaries and test new ideas, always standing up for what we believe in

Constant110 years old and stronger than ever

Established in 1903, our pioneering founders such asMargaret Horn had a very clear purpose from the start –to promote child welfare and family health at the heart ofa local community in need.

“It helps me toknow that whenI am at workHenry is caredfor and I don’thave to worry.”

The social impact we deliver is not limitedto high quality childcare provision. Itincludes supporting parents back to work,multi-generational engagement withcommunities, local employment of nurserystaff and our apprenticeship programme.Every year we recruit 20–30 apprenticeswhich helps develop their skills andemployability, and in turn grows our ownhigh quality workforce.

Our social impact

To tackle this issue, we have developed aunique social business model that usessustainable income from our nurseries inmore affluent areas to target some of thecapital’s most deprived communities; indoing so, we make high quality day careavailable to families that havetraditionally been unable to reach orafford it.

We are developing a measure of our social impact that focuses on key driversthat directly benefit children’sdevelopment. This is assessed using acombination of the time children spend inour nurseries, how long they stay with us,the quality of their experience and thedegree to which we help develop theirhome learning environment.

Research continues to confirm the long term impact of a good qualityEarly Years education for all children. However, despite great stridesin social welfare over the past century, children are now slipping backinto poverty – with over 4 in 10 London children affected.

Financial review

As the graph illustrates, in 2005 theorganisation had 11 nurseries, 85 staffand an annual income of £2m; this hasgrown to 24 nurseries, more than 300staff and an annual turnover of £8.3m inthe financial year ended 31st March 2013.Even more impressive is the growth in thenumber of children who have attended aLEYF nursery, increasing from just over1,000 in 2005 to almost 2,400 by the endof March 2013.

LEYF has grown substantially year on year since 2005 both financially (nurseryrevenues) and in social impact (in the number of children attending LEYF).

The map below shows the boroughs wecurrently operate in and where we wouldlike to open more nurseries.

The future

We are already forging close partnershipswith like-minded property developers, housing associations, academies and otherstrategic partners to achieve this. And wewould like to find new partners who canhelp us open more nurseries where theyare really needed – and so build a betterfuture for more of London’s children.

We have ambitious plans to grow our footprint further, increasing our reach to 5,000 children over the next 3 years.
