Room 1077 A New Employment Model for the UMES/IBM Academic Initiative The first report from the Commission on the Skills of the American Workforce, America’s Choice: high skills or low wages was released in 1990. The commission concluded that: (1) A world-wide market was developing for low-skill labor. (2) For the U.S. to compete in that market it could look forward to a continued decline in wages and very long working hours. (3) Or it could focus on competing in the world-wide market for high-value-added products. (4) To do that, it would have to adopt internationally bench-marked standards for educating its students and workers. Over the last 20 years, the American workforce has had to face the following important trends: (1) A swiftly rising number of American workers at every skill level are in direct competition with workers in every corner of the globe. (2) Further, if someone can figure out the algorithm for a routine job, chances are that it is economic to automate it. (2) As a result, many good well-paying, middle-class jobs involve routine work of this kind and are rapidly being automated. In the future, to be competitive U.S. workers would have to possess a very high level of educational preparation,

green energy solutions, combined with legislative mandates for waste reduction, recycling, organic and inorganic processing of materials, as well as emission reducing technology, has created unique opportunities in a variety of markets and segments of society. No matter where we live, work, or play, we generate waste and consume organic material such as food; however, we are running out of landfill space and environmental regulations make the processing of this material increasingly difficult. Once a popular alternative to the landfilling of material, the creation of energy from incineration once filled that need. However, some believe that the airborne pollutant discharges that often accompany incineration, are contaminating the environment and contributing to the increase in greenhouse gases. Through new and innovative technologies, we are able to create clean energy and other byproducts that are derived from organic and inorganic waste material. Through these technologies and systematic approaches to alternative processing, we are shaping the future and rethinking the traditional approaches to organic and inorganic waste management and recycling. Through our systems (ReGreen Organics) we are able to produce a variety of products that are not only energy efficient and capable of producing clean renewable energy, but can be also used for fertilizers, compost, irrigation, and even animal feed – All of this in less than 30-minutes! dive deep to discover indicators of positive and negative cultures and climates as well as strategies to begin the reshaping of the overall organizational culture to support student success. These “everys” link individuals together in fascinating ways. Higher education has become a product in which institutions worldwide, compete daily for students by finding creative ways to satisfy student needs and preferences. With the continuing rise in the preference for flexibility, educational institutions are discovering that when students and faculty have significantly different cultural backgrounds, ideals, and learning styles, the expectations of the learning experience quite often goes unfulfilled.

From solar farms, green button and comprehensive energy data management to liquefied natural gas and cybersecurity, the energy industry is moving aggressively into the 21st century. Few industries offer the unique mix of STEM supported initiatives and unique, global opportunities as those found in the energy sector. This one of a kind panel will explore the broad, and oftentimes unknown energy industry and, the strategies students and entrepreneurs should initiate today to prepare for tomorrow's opportunities. Opportunity Today: Educational and Entrepreneurial Opportunities in the Utility Industry The energy industry is undergoing a significant and historic change. Day Time Location Workshop Presenters/Email Address Friday 9:00a EASC

Room 1080 College Underserved Community Partnership (CUPP) Program Underserved communities are in need of resources to improve their health, land, and economic viability. However, while there are many state, and federal resources available to them, these communities often lack the technical knowledge and skills needed to go after these resources, and a plan by which they can pursue these resources in a progressive, long term manner. The Environmental Protection Agency, Region 4 (Atlanta, GA), developed the CUPP program to address these concerns. In early 2016, EPA Region 3 (Philadelphia, PA) joined in these efforts to enlist colleges to give students internship opportunities to assist these underserved communities with vital technical support. This will give them the ability to develop plans to improve the economic future and environmental health of their communities. At the same time, it will provide practical experience for these students in their areas of academic study, and academic credit for their efforts. The communities will receive these services at no cost to them, and the schools are providing their services at no cost to the federal government.
