DESCRIPTION

Are you looking to ensure high availability while reducing operational complexity and costs? Stretched cluster configurations mirror or replicate storage across sites, providing continuous access to data and applications without the threat of downtime. Clustering also automates the movement of resources -- simplifying the disaster recovery process and reducing administration costs. View this slide deck and webinar recording to learn how your business can benefit from stretched clustering. Chris Poelker, FalconStor's highly regarded storage expert and author of Storage Area Networks for Dummies, will discuss how multi-site clusters allow users to: • Reduce the cost of replication bandwidth • Automate complex, error-prone, and time consuming procedures • Ensure cost-effective disaster recovery with existing servers and storage • Migrate data seamlessly between tiers to minimize costs • Leverage low-cost hardware with enterprise-class data services

What is Intelligent Abstraction?

“Intelligent abstraction is the function of de-coupling application data from all physical constraints while enabling

policy based movement, storage, and protection of information assets”

Why Intelligent Abstraction is Important

IA significantly improves availability of IT services

• Business expectations: Service Up = $$

• Disasters and Outages =– Loss of Service– Loss of Revenue

• Service Recovery is much more than just remote-copy

The Issues

• BC/DR Consumes much of the IT budget• Complex, error-prone, and time consuming• Difficult to keep current and consistent• Different vendors for each platform• Different procedures for each platform• Long service recovery times not meeting SLA’s• Easy to recover data, but not complete services

MicroScan WAN-Optimized Data Replication

• Applications and file systems write far more data to disk than actual changes

• FalconStor solutions scan the changes at a 512 byte level and replicates onlythe changed data– Up to 90% less data.

Equivalent to 10:1 dedupe without deduping!

512 byte = empty disk sector

= data written by application or file system

= sector with actual data change

A typical 8k write of data. Many systems send all 8k or more.

FalconStor solutions send only the truly changed sectors.

Integrated Continuous Protection Eliminates Backup• Continuous data capture with multiple options for historical

views. Data automatically mirrored or replicated offsite.• Combines TRUE CDP journaling with NEAR-CDP

snapshots for any point recovery– Up to 1000 snapshots per volume

Full Journaling: 4 hours

Hourly Snapshots:

24

Daily Snapshots: 7

Monthly Snapshots: 5

Example

• Snapshots can be scheduled as well as created ad hoc• Leverage snapshots for Test/Dev (no storage required)• Create readable/writeable view from any point in time• Snapshots always bootable for Instant recovery

Integrated Data Archiving if Required• Mount CDP snapshots• Use existing backup server to move data to dedupe repository or

tape – Does not impact primary disk or host– Eliminates backup software agents from servers

• Snapshot mounting is automated by the HyperTrac™ Backup Accelerator system

• Increase backup speeds up to 1000% compared to LAN backup model

Why a Stretched Cluster?

• Zero downtime, No data loss• Automated Failover and Failback• Best-in-class RTO/RPO• May become a requirement for cloud providers

and MSP’s

Planning a Stretched Cluster• Typically only mission critical applications need to be included

– Ensure you have enough bandwidth for the Traffic across the link

• 2, 4, 8,10,Gb etc.

– Do you need resilience? – 2 links is better

– Define the right extension based on distance: Dark Fibre, DWDM etc.

– Obtain the true distance of the extended link. Not the A to B distance as Fibreand circuit providers often have longer distances

– Get the provider to measure the Latency figures for the main circuit and any ‘standby’ links they may use

• Assure application I/O response time requirements can be met (latency)

• Check that any application server clusters being deployed support being ‘Stretched’ (quorum resource, etc.)– Ensure Best Practices are adhered to

Latency Estimation

Latency = distance/200,000

The speed of light in fibre is about 66% of the speed of light in a vacuum: 200,000 km/s. The one way delay for 100km is 100/200 000= 0.5ms
