Visual communication is a vital part of how we interact and photography plays an ever more important role in the universal media landscape. Media photographers are employed to produce digital photography for a variety of media products in a range of situations such as photo- journalism, advertising, fashion photography, paparazzi photography, and stylised shots for use on websites, CD covers and other promotional material. You have been commissioned by the Manchester Evening News to produce a range of photographs to be used as part of a “Guide to the City” for new students moving to the area. The images will be used in a pull out full colour guide and on their website. In order to undertake a photographic brief you need to understand how digital photographs are produced. You will explore the component parts of a digital camera so you can understand how images are captured. You will investigate where, how and why digital photographs are produced for media products. You will find two examples of where digital photographs are used and present a discussion on their use. Your blog posts will have the following titles: Task 1 Production of digital photography Task 2 Techniques in digital photography Task 3 Planning Final Images Task 4 Project Review

Task 1

Learning  aim  A:  Understand  the  production  of  digital  photography    Part  1:  Understand  the  production  of  digital  photography    Learners  will  understand  how  (digital)  photographs  are  produced.  They  will  understand  the  component  parts  of  a  camera  and  how  it  captures  images.  

• As  a  group  research  and  present  a  “rough  guide  to  digital  cameras”  

• Individually  put  your  research  into  a  powerpoint.    

Part  2:  Why  digital  photographs  are  produced  for  media  products  

• As  a  group,  create  a  mind  map  exploring  the  different  uses  of  photography  in  the  media  with  examples  

• Individually  complete  the  power  point  on  types  of  photography  including  analysis  of  at  least  3  different  types  of  photography

Part 1 Exploring photography In groups of 2 or 3 learners will learners will carry out 4 different mini photoshoots and describe the different techniques and settings needed including:

• Location Photography • Studio Photography • Photographing different speed subjects

• Night photography and light painting Part 2 Digital photography techniques Learners will find examples and produce a guide describing different photographic techniques, including:

• Shot types • Composition • Focus

Part 3 Exporting and storing digital photographs Learners will produce a leaflet entitled Exporting and storing digital photographs. It needs to describe the process from transfer to saving using visual examples and compare the different types of files including Jpeg, RAW and TIF.
