An Approach to Unit Delivery and Assessment

Level 2 Unit 7 Applications of Maintenance Techniques in Engineering

Next >

Approach given here is formed by following the awarding bodies:

Learning outcomes

Assessment tasks

Types of maintenance – for products, plant or equipment and use of statistical trends (LO.1)

Maintenance tasks – devise procedures and carry out routine maintenance, including service and adjustments (LO.2)

Poor maintenance – implications if equipment is not properly maintained and consequences of not maintaining optimum stock levels of spares (LO.3)

Learning outcomes:

L2 U7 Application of Maintenance Techniques in Engineering:

Risk assessment – for engineering maintenance tasks (LO.4)

Level 2 Unit 7 Applications of Maintenance Techniques in Engineering

Maintenance and servicing of vehicles based partly around the ST390 Automotive Technology module

Engineering theme:

The Automotive Technology module covers:

Lubrication Fault finding Routine maintenance Vehicle systems

The activities in the module are used for acquiring knowledge and skills during unit delivery

Next >

The panel trainer and simulator have a system for putting faults into a car model

Level 2 Unit 7 Applications of Maintenance Techniques in Engineering

Assessment Task 1 – Types of maintenance

Part 1: Write a short report describing two types of maintenance, explaining where they are used. Justify why one type is appropriate for the selected product

The assessment task asks students to base their report on motor vehicles

Part 2: Given some statistical data on failure, analyse the trend, calculate mean-time-time-to-failure and describe how the data can be used to predict reliability

Statistical data is provided on hard disk drive failures

Assessment Task 2 – Routine maintenance

For a given maintenance procedure, replace a part, make two adjustments and carry out a diagnostic check to see if further maintenance is necessary

The assessment task requires the student to check the condition of ignition leads and spark plugs on a motor vehicle and replace as necessary

Describe two problems that may occur if the product is not properly maintained

Explain and justify how the impact of these problems could be reduced

The assessment task asks students to base their answers on motor vehicles

Workshop job sheets are provided for the maintenance procedure and a PowerPoint presentation for underpinning knowledge

Level 2 Unit 7 Applications of Maintenance Techniques in Engineering

Assessment Task 3 – Risk assessments and maintenance procedures

Next >

For given documentation on a maintenance requirement, carry out a risk assessment, devise a maintenance procedure, and identifying the replacement parts

The student requires documentation for them to base their maintenance procedure on changing the oil and oil filter of a motor vehicle

Describe what would happen if stock levels were not maintained, and use a statistical method that shows the appropriate stock level required

They will need from the vehicle handbook / vehicle specification:

Note, the procedure does not have to be carried out

Oil type and grade, engine volume Oil filter type and replacement

intervals

Delivery and assessment approach:

An example scheme of work is provided that enables students to acquire the knowledge and skills to complete the assessed tasks

The scheme states students should work through assignments 1 to 10 & 12 of the Automotive Technology module

The scheme of work also refers to other sources:

Student textbook Internet sites Ideas for visits LJ support documents

Level 2 Unit 7 Applications of Maintenance Techniques in Engineering

Assessment tasks are provided

The student is to collect evidence during the assessed tasks, by producing:

Maintenance reports Risk assessment Maintenance schedule Maintenance procedure Evaluation report System photographs

Delivery and assessment approach:

LJ support documents include: Risk assessment – examples

and a template Workshop safety and service

information PowerPoint presentations

Example maintenance schedules and procedures
