• Leukemia is a cancer of the white blood cells. When a child has Leukemia, large numbers of abnormal white blood cells are produced.

• The cancerous white blood cells are immature and are no longer effective in fighting disease. Usually, when our body needs new cells, there is an orderly process for cell growth and division. When old cells die out, new cells grow and replace them. But sometimes the genes mutate and change the cell. That cell keeps dividing and is out of control. That’s when Leukemia forms.
