DISCOVERY PARK OF AMERICA — Santa will be on hand again this year at Discovery Park of America in a beauti-ful holiday setting Dec. 3, 10 and 17 from noon-5 p.m. in Dinosaur Hall. Family pic-ture-taking is encouraged as little ones tell Santa their secrets. But that’s not all. The DPA Let It Glow Light Show will feature more than a half million (that’s 30 miles-worth) of holiday lights on the road around the park and special 3-D glasses to make the most of the experience, in addition to the opportunity to drive through last year’s popular tunnel of lights. There are additions to the light show, as well, in the form of Charlie Brown and Rudolph. The Let It Glow Light Show will be open 5-9
p.m. most December evenings, except for Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve. The popular David Johnson Chorus will spread holiday cheer in sea-sonal song in Dinosaur Hall and at The Chapel Dec. 3. DPA is also a great place to shop for gifts and to purchase special edible Christmas treats. The fun doesn’t end on Dec. 25, though. There will be two special New Year’s Eve parties. The free “Noon Year’s Eve” party for children will be in Dinosaur Hall early in the day and dancing and dining will follow that evening at a ticketed event for adults. For more information, check things out at discovery-parkofamerica.com.

Dear Santa Claus, Letters from Sara Burnett’s class at Black Oak School
According to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, 91 percent of long-distance holiday travel is by personal vehicle. And while many people may associate holiday travel with long lines at airport check-in counters and security checkpoints, the BTS notes that just 5 to 6 per-cent of holiday trips are taken by air.
The remaining 2 to 3 percent are taken by bus, train, ship or another mode of transportation.
The average long-distance holiday trip for the Christmas/New Year’s holiday is 275 miles, which is slightly longer than the average long-distance trip dur-ing the rest of the year, indicating that many travelers are willing to travel farther for the holiday season than they might be during the rest of the year.
In addition, when traveling long distances for the Christmas/New Year’s holiday, travelers spend roughly four nights away from home, on average.
