Although Ive gonethrough phases of wanting to be a Hollywood director or a big-shot producer, I had no ideawhere to begin to explore career choices in such a competitive field. For the past four years Ihave kept up a Youtube channel and have truly enjoyed the creative aspects of coming up withan idea and putting it on screen, but I have also come to the realization that the long, gruelinghours of working on a film set would not suit other goals I have for the future. So, after I took thetime to research media-related careers, I decided to explore the art of advertising for my seniorproject.The product of my project includes both a commercial and two print advertisementspromoting adoptions through The Humane Society of America. I made it a point to choose atopic that had meaning to me, but through my research I learned that it didnt matter if I caredabout it, but if the audience cared about it. The majority of my research consisted of techniquesused to lure an audience in or trick them into thinking that they need something. Although I didnot aim to trick my audience, my goal was to open my audiences eyes to a new perspective ofdogs. The biggest obstacle I faced in such an endeavor was to maintain the skeptical nature ofsomeone who does not own a dog, for that is who I intend to reach through my advertisements. I chose to base my project off of advertising because I want my future career to be in themedia industry while still allowing me the structure of a nine to five job. I loved the creativeaspects of designing the campaign and predicting the response of my viewers, but I mostlyenjoyed being able to film and edit the product together. Because of this experience I havefound that Id like to pursue a film and photography business and possibly be my own boss oneday! My preferences throughout the year have changed and I have discovered that running abusiness based around filming and photography fits exactly what I want from a future careerand has given me a clear lead on where to start in college. Although I have moaned and groaned over senior project all year, I am truly glad that Itook the time to really explore advertising. Because of this project I have discovered thatadvertising might not be what I want to pursue, but it also helped me to decide to major in massmedia arts at the University of Georgia.
