Camille BogelMarch 4, 1953 – April 7, 2014

Remembrances from Her Friends and NeighborsShe was an embodiment of spirit, courage, and kindness - a Texas woman who showed hospitality to all. If you needed someone to fix your house, she’d find someone to do it. If you had a complaint she was sure to listen, even if she disagreed. So Camille, the world lost somebody special when you left us. You made the world a better place.

v

I didn’t know Camille well, but actually she always made me feel we were old friends. She was always carrying a bundle of love and caring , it seemed.

v

Camille was an extraordinary woman. Every time I saw her, she was smiling. She persevered through adversity with optimism and grace. Her indomitable spirit and courage were an inspiration to all who had the opportunity to spend time with her. Camille, you were loved and will be deeply missed.

v

Camille was generosity and compassion wrapped up in joyful energy.

v

The first time I saw Camille was in 1989 right after I bought my house on Waugh and Van Buren. I am pretty sure she tried to give me a stray cat. Fortunately, I already had a cat. Having a cat that was fixed immediately elevated my status with Camille. Over the years, we became close friends. She and Jim saw my kids grow up, move out and we all grew old. She watched our house and pets when we were away. We chased bad guys out of the neighborhood together ... she was so fearless , it scared me :) . We chased and caught stray dogs together and she found homes for them. She was crazy, strong and sweet .My family and I will miss her dearly.

Donations in memory of Camille Bogel can be made to:

Online:www.saveacatrescue.org

I only met Camille one time but I have a funny story. I was visiting Kathryn and had just broken my leg. I had Lily with me and when I mentioned taking her outside for a pee, Camille quickly offered to do this for me. As I handed her Lily’s leash, she looked at it and said “this isn’t a leash, this is rickrack”. I have told that story many times. I want to express my sorrow for the passing of your friend. We can all learn a lesson from her fortitude, constant giving to others and indomitable spirit.

v

Camille had a heart of gold, She loved everyone she met and always put them, her husband Jim, and helping animals before her own needs. For many years she trapped unwanted stray cats, had them spayed/neutered, vaccinated and, if needed, rehabilitated. She was a true animal rescuer, wife and friend. She saw the beauty in everyone, every animal and the world. No matter how bad she felt she greeted you with a smile and always asked about your troubles never worrying about her own. She will be truly missed and always remembered for her love, compassion, inspiration and dedication to everyone who had the honor of meeting her.

v

Camille expressed more enthusiasm for life than people half her age who were in perfect health. Sometimes, she felt like a force of nature, jumping in “where Angels feared to tread” and encouraging others to do the same. She smiled almost constantly, and didn’t stop to complain about anything. There was always another cat to save, a dog to foster, another project to tackle. I think the best way to honor her memory is to try to be more like her.

Super Fun Picnic April 12, 2014 By George Sroka

About 100 people attended our Super Fun Picnic on Saturday, April 12, in Cherryhurst Park. Residents shared lots of tasty food at our first potluck picnic co-sponsored by the east Montrose Civic Association, the Friends of Cherryhurst Park, and the Hyde Park Civic Association.

Kroger on Montrose and HEB on Dunlavy donated water, soft drinks,

cookies and a large cake. Neighbors enjoyed socializing, and children enjoyed games and other activities.

Thank you, Carol Rensink and June Spencer from Cherryhurst, Glenn van Gaalen from East Montrose, and Charles Herrigan, supervisor of the Cherryhurst Community Center, for making this possible through your commitment of time and effort.

A special “thank you” to Sara Fernandez for taking the lovely photos of the picnic you see in this newsletter.

You can learn more about Cherryhurst Park at friendsofcherryhurstpark.org and more about the East Montrose Civic Association at www.eastmontrose.org or on Facebook.

Sunday Streets HTX is a pilot program to promote and improve the health of Houstonians. Sunday Streets HTX will open a stretch of streets to allow cycling and walking, and will provide a free, family-friendly opportunity to be physically active. Similar initiatives have been very successful in almost 100 cities across the country.

The second Sunday Streets HTX pilot event will take place on Sunday, May 4, 2014 from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. on Westheimer between Yoakum Blvd and McDuffie.

Residents along the route are highly encouraged to participate in this family-friendly event. The Mayor’s Office of Special Events and Houston Police Department will be restricting motorized traffic along the route. Controlled motorized traffic will be allowed through the intersection at Mandell. Sunday Streets HTX is not a street festival. It is a family-friendly opportunity to be physically active and enjoy active transportation within the neighborhood.

This summer, Houston Center for Contemporary Craft (HCCC) is pleased to present a solo exhibition by Houston met-alsmith and educator, Sandie Zilker, the fi fth artist to be recognized for their roles as career artists in Texas who have made a signifi cant impact on the fi eld of craft.

As evidenced by her jewelry, Zilker is no stranger to experimentation in color, contrast, texture, pattern, and form. Using the body as a frame of reference, she pulls from elements of illusion and surprise to elevate adornment to its fullest potential. Each of her pieces is packed with personality, increasing the wearer’s senses and creating a unique relationship between wearer and object.

Zilker’s exhibition at HCCC serves as a retrospective of her jewelry work over the past four decades. The show includes an exploration by the artist of newer technologies, including video, as well as installation.

This year marks Zilker’s 40th anniversary teaching at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston’s Glassell School of Art, where she is head of the Jewelry and Enamel Department and the Three Dimensional Design Department. She also serves as the School’s Coordinator of Student Events and Zilker holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Design and Metalsmithing from the University of Houston and a Master of Fine Arts in Metalsmithing at Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfi eld Hills, Michigan. Her work has been exhibited worldwide and is included in the collections of The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; The Racine Art Museum, Wisconsin; Designmuseo, Finland; and Norden Feldske Kundiondustrimuseum, Norway. Her jewelry has been published in numerous books, including 500

Brooches, 500 Bracelets, 500 Plastic and Resin Objects, and Showcase 500 Art Necklaces.
