The Session of Second Presbyterian Church is pleased to an-nounce the call it has extended to Mr. Gabriel Fluhrer to serve as as-sistant minister. For the past three years, Gabe has faithfully served as a ministerial intern to our church. Effective July 1, 2008, he will assume the position of Assistant Minister for Youth and Family. To this end, Gabe will pursue his ordination as a teaching elder in Cal-vary Presbytery of the Presbyterian Church in America immediately upon his scheduled graduation from Greenville Presbyterian Theo-logical Seminary in the Spring of 2008.

Gabe’s family moved to Greenville in the early 1990’s from Winston Salem, NC, when his father became the head of the Fine Arts Center. He graduated from Greenville Middle School, Greenville High School, and the University of South Carolina (May, 2002.) contacting you to meet in prayer and for pastoral counsel regarding the Christian growth of your young men and ladies. Meanwhile, Gabe will continue to engage in one-on-one discipleship with our youth, to teach Sunday School, and to lead group gatherings for our youth. Additionally, as a pastor on our church staff, Gabe will con-tribute to our general ministry through preaching, the administration of the sacraments, gospel outreach, and pastoral ministry.

Please rejoice with us for God’s work in and through the life of Gabriel Fluhrer, and rejoice with Gabe and Callie over this significant milestone in their lives. Pray for Gabe as he concludes his time in seminary and for Callie as she serves as a wife, mother and nurse. Pray that God would fill them both with the Holy Spirit, so that through Gabe’s faithful, prayerful, and godly ministry our church might be blessed with the good fruits of salvation.

May the Lord bless you all this week.

Yours in Christ,

Pastor Rick Phillips

“…the acceptable way of worshipping the true God is instituted by himself and so limited by his own revealed will, that he may not be worshipped according to the imaginations and devices of men, or the suggestions of Satan, under any visible representation, or any other way not prescribed in the Holy Scriptures.” WCF, Chapter 21, paragraph 1b. Why, then, do we include a Call to Worship at the opening of a worship service? The mandate for the Call to Worship comes from the Biblical truth that God is a great King, and we are His creatures, sinful and corrupt. When we gather for corporate worship, we are coming into His presence in a special way (we are always in His presence in a general way). Esther dared not to enter into her husband’s prescence (because he was the great king of Medo-Persia) without him extending the scepter to invite her into the court. We are the Bride of Christ, yet we dare not enter without our Great King extending the scepter to us. God Himself invites us into His presence when the ordained man, speaking as God’s authorized messenger, reads a passage from Scripture which either commands or implies our wor-ship of the living and true God. Our worship is a “command performance” – we are called by God from our homes, occupations, and recreations into His presence to render the acceptable sacrifice of praise.

Why do we do that? - The Call to Worship

In fields where they lay keeping their sheep, on a cold winter’s night that was so deep. Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, born is the King of Israel! They looked up and a saw a star, shining in the east, beyond them far. And to the earth it gave great light, and so it continued both day and night. Nowell...And by the light of that same star, three wise men came from country far. To seek for a king was their intent, and to follow the star wherever it went. Nowell...This star drew nigh to the northwest, o’er Bethlehem it took its rest. And there it did both stop and stay, right over the place where Jesus lay.. Nowell...Then enter’d in those wise men three, full rev’rently upon their knee. And offered there in his presence their gold and myrrh and frankin-cense. Nowell… (verse 6) Then let us all with one accord, sing praises to our heav-enly Lord. That hath made heaven and earth of naught, and with his blood mankind hath bought. Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, born is the King of Israel!

The Commandment Exodus 20:8-11 “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the LORD your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, not your stranger who is within your gates. For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and hal-lowed it.”

The Confession of Sin and Supplication for Grace Minister and People O Lord, no day of our life has passed that has not proved us guilty in Thy sight. Prayers have been uttered from a prayerless heart. Praise has been often praiseless sound. Our best services are filthy rags. Blessed Jesus, let us find a refuge in Thy appeasing wounds. Though our sins rise to heaven, Thy merits soar above them. Though unrighteousness weighs us down to hell, Thy righteousness exalts us to Thy throne. All things in us call for our rejection, all things in Thee plead our ac-ceptance. We appeal from Thy throne of perfect justice to Thy throne of boundless grace. Grant us to hear Thy assuring voice: that by Thy stripes we are healed, that Thou wast bruised for our iniquities, that Thou hast been made sin for us that we might be righteous in Thee, and that our grievous sins, our manifold sins, are all forgiven, buried in the ocean of Thy concealing blood. Keep us always clinging to Thy cross. Flood us every moment with descending grace. In Thy merciful name we pray. Amen.

The Scriptural Assurance of Pardon 1 Peter 1:18, 19 Knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold, from your aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers, but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot.

The Poinsettias are dedicated this Lord’s Day to the glory of God

by church members in honor or memory of loved ones.
