Welcome Lance Cobb! Parkway’s Youth Director

After a 5 month search process, we are thrilled to introduce the candidate who was our number one choice from the

moment we concluded our first interview! Lance Cobb was born and raised in Seattle, WA, and earned his B.A. in Youth Ministry and Biblical Studies from

Gordon College. He served as Director of Neighborhood Outreach & Urban Youth Ministry at First Presbyterian Church in Olney (Philadelphia) for 5 years, and most recently as Director of Youth & Family Ministries for New Life Presbyterian Church (Philadelphia) for the last 10 years. Lance is called to Youth Ministry and finds great joy in fulfilling his call. He has a team approach to ministry and actively disciples leaders and students. He has led many worldwide and local mis-sion trips, extreme adventure trips on rock walls, hiking trips, father/son events/retreats, and as much outdoor excite-ment Youth can handle.

Lance and Heather (married in 1995) have 4 children and love to be in the outdoors. They love to geocache, rock climb (lead 5.8), ice climb, hike (climbed Mt.Shasta-- 14,129’-- in CA in June of 2011), camp, play sports, swim, ski, road trip, and just goof around. When we asked Lance to tell us about his family here is what he shared with us…

Heather is an amazing woman of God. She knows and walks with Jesus more deeply than most anyone else I know. She cares for and loves people in ways that bring life, encouragement and a sense of belonging. She helps me in minis-try through the long haul and knows my deep hurts and wounds yet walks besides me and helps me see Jesus when all I want to do is give up. Her smile is ever there and always makes people’s days brighter and hearts encouraged. She still thinks camping with a tent and a 60 pound backpack is the way to go and is real camping - not the state park cabin alternative that most of our friends say is truly roughing it. Heather trusts in God fully. She encourages me in my walk, to be a man who humbly calls out to his Savior and Lord. She is amazing and beautiful in the Lord. She is also an amazing counselor. She has worked with a nationally renowned Christian counselor in Philly, and has established amazing counseling groups for children from broken homes, with social deficiencies, from abusive situations, and who were bullied. She formed leadership teams of elementary kids along with an amazing mentor program for the last 11 years at Calvary Christian Academy. Heather is loved by many who have seen the love of Jesus through her.

All of our children love the Lord and we are so thankful. They, luckily, got many of the mother’s genes and are smart, kind, gentle, loving, respectful, and gracious. They all love life in their own special and precious ways.

Tadan (13) is passionate about soccer, xbox, and rock climbing, and biking. He likes to hike and play with his little sisters. He is strong in his faith but not as crazy as his dad. He is a great friend to many and desires to serve wherever he can.

Sydney (10) is very mature and loving to everyone. She will most likely work with rescuing animals someday, or tak-ing care of wildlife on some major level. Sydney loves school, soccer, band- she plays piano and drums and glocken-spiel; and she owns a beautiful collie.

Makenzie (6) loves the outdoors, riding bikes, sighting animals, is passionate about life, and wears her emotions on her sleeve. Makenzie is totally excited about grass, dirt, playing, and her little sister.

Paiton (4) loves stuffed animals and baby dolls. She will make you smile as her bright eyes and smile just gleam. She loves the trampoline, taking the dog on walks in the parks, and playing with her siblings. Paiton can talk and play with the best of them even by herself.

Lance and Tadan will be leaving on July 22 to participate in the Parkway Senior High Mission Trip. The Cobb family will be moving to Cumming in late July, so let’s prepare to lend a hand and do all we can to make

them feel like part of the Parkway family!

If you want to reach the Cobbs before they arrive, you may e-mail the family at [email protected]

Parkway’s Stephen Ministry

Stephen Ministry is a Christ centered caring ministry we have at Parkway. Stephen Ministers are not counselors but are specially trained congregation members who provide one-to-one Christian care to people (care receivers) who are experiencing a life challenge or crisis. A care receiver must be at least 18 years old and the Stephen Minister and care receiver are the same gender. The name Stephen comes from Stephen in the Bible, who was the first lay person com-missioned by the apostles to provide caring ministry to those in need as recorded in Acts 6. Stephen Ministers are caregivers who are: Compassionate – able to share the sufferings of their care receivers; Full of faith – rely solely on God to be the one who heals all wounds; Skilled – know how to listen, understand, and empathize; and Trust-worthy – maintain confidentiality, visit care receivers regularly, and remain committed to their ministry.

There are five types of needs for care that Stephen Ministers can provide to care receivers in our congregation and community. The five types are crisis care, follow-up care, chronic care, preventive care, and supportive care. Crisis care is the caring ministry people think about first in describing pastoral care. Follow-up care is commonly needed by people recovering from a major life crisis. Stephen Ministers focus on one care receiver and can continue the caring relationship for as long as the care receiver needs it. Chronic care is for a long-term problem; chronic illness or suffering can be like a crisis that never ends. Preventative care helps people anticipate and prepare for po-tentially difficult upcoming events. Supportive care is caring for the care-giver. A Stephen Minister can provide vital support to anyone facing the challenge of caring for a loved one who is going through a life crisis or transition.

We currently have four active Stephen Leaders (Pastor Bill Ford, Norm Baker, Jan Parkes, and Marcia Tidwell).Stephen Edge, one of our Stephen Ministers, plans to attend a Leader’s Training Course (LTC) in 2013 with commissioning as a Stephen Leader at Parkway to follow. Stephen Leaders receive a comprehensive seven day Lead-er’s Training Course taught at several locations around the country by Stephen Ministries of St. Louis. The Stephen Leaders provide 50 hours of training at Parkway to trainees who are then commissioned as Stephen Ministers. We currently have 13 active Stephen Ministers (James Ashley, Matthew Barranco, Stefani Baskam, Joan Brown, Julie Cordry, Stephen Edge, Brenda Helmly, Betsy Hunter, Nanette Kicker, Shannon Moore, Norman Plourde, Wilma Plourde, & Bonnie Vaughan). Our Stephen Leaders are also trained Stephen Ministers except for Pastor Bill Ford.

Parkway has had Stephen Ministry since 2000, and in that time we have trained seven classes (2000, 2001, 2004, 2006, 2008-2009, 2010-2011, and 2011-2012). Stephen Ministers have a two-year com-mitment including the 50 hour training period. The two-year commit-ment can be extended per approval. We usually train new Stephen Minister classes when we have enough volunteer candidates with the right spiritual gifts

If you would like more information about Stephen Ministry, become a Stephen Minister, or if you or someone you know might benefit from the care of a Stephen Minister, please contact Pastor Bill Ford, Phone 770-889-8694, E-mail: [email protected] or Norm Baker, Stephen Leader, Phone 770-886-0439, E-mail: normanma-

Ladies of Parkway,

Would you like to get in better shape for summer? Would you like to do this with your Parkway friends? There are several ladies from Parkway who have started a daily walk on the Greenway. It is so much easier and much more fun when you have a walk with a buddy. We start from the Bethelview Trailhead at 2:00 p.m, Monday thru Friday. If you would like to be a part of this group, please send your cell phone number to Marla Edge at [email protected]. All fitness levels welcome. You can come as much or as little as you like, whatever is convenient for you. She will add your number to her group text. there is rain, etc.

THE MILITARY MINISTRY—JULY 11TH We will be meeting Wednesday, July 11th at 11:30 in the back of the sanctuary. We welcome supplies - food, toiletries and monetary gifts. We do not have enough people to sit and cut them out on the day of mailing. It does not take long if you do the ones you get. 30 minutes or so sitting in front of the TV would do it. not cut out. Thank you for your cooperation.

The Role of a Deacon

How Can Your Deacon be of Help to You?

Effective deacons lead by encouraging, motivating, and serving others. Acts 6:5

The office of deacon as set for the in Scripture is one of compassion, witness, and service after the example

of Jesus Christ. Persons of spiritual character, honest repute, of exemplary lives, brotherly and sisterly love,

sincere compassion, and sound judgment should be chosen for this office. It is the duty of deacons, first of all,

to minister to those who are in need, to the sick, to the friendless, and to any who may be in distress both within

and beyond the community of faith. G-6.401-G-6.402

Visiting with you to “get acquainted”. You should always feel comfortable in calling on your Deacon

during any illness or at a time of sorrow. Get to know each other before any need arises.

Rejoicing with you and your family. Sharing your special moments can increase your joy. Let your

Deacon know what is going on in your life.

Being your friend. You can count on your Deacon to listen to your troubles and concerns in confidence.

It is comforting to know that someone is willing to be there to share your burdens or listen to interesting plans

you might have.

Giving support in a time of crisis. Allow your Deacon to know the difficulties you are facing whether this

is financial, marital, loneliness, health or an imminent death. Listening is a special privilege in a Deacon’s min-

istry to you.

Helping to find answers to questions about faith or our church with its theme of Connect, Grow and

Serve. You have a personal resource you can turn to – your Deacon. It is better to voice your questions re-

garding your spiritual life or your concerns about the activities of the church so your Deacon can help clarify and

encourage you as a part of the body of Christ at Parkway.

Guiding you to have a closer relationship with members of the church through fellowship. As you

connect with God in the worship services, you also grow spiritually through being a part of smaller groups. Fel-

lowship is offered through Wednesday night meals, Bible Studies mid-week and Sundays, and any number of

special interests groups. Find a place that suits you and soon you will put names to faces and share more easi-

ly.

Finding ways to serve within the church. Your Deacon, as a leader in various ministries, is familiar with

the places of service at Parkway and the needs that your spiritual gifts can fill. Discuss where you would like to

serve as you continue on your journey to Connect, Grow and Serve.

Praying for you and with you. This is a place of importance that your Deacon wants to honor. Let your Dea-

con know of a specific request from you and be assured that this will be held in confidence.

If you don’t know who your Deacon is and who the members are of the flock you are in, please contact Donna

Carroll at Parkway, 770-889-8694.
