purpose of game: The child’s goal is to correctly retrieve all the grocery items as requested by the adult.

addresses: Helps children with the ability to hold information in their mind while performing a task. This game targets auditory memory, but can be modified to enhance visual memory.

materials & preparation: Grocery Store Cards: These cards depict items that can be purchased at a store/market. Print on cardstock or laminate for durability. Cut out each individual card. There are two sets of these cards, you will need both:

1. Larger Cards (36 Total) = This set will be used by the adult to check the student’s accuracy when returning from retrieving the groceries.

2. Smaller Cards (36 Total) = This set will be used for the “store”. These are the cards the student will place on their shopping chart.

Game Board Shopping Cart: Print on cardstock or laminate for durability. There are 5 different versions included. Optional = Place Velcro on the back of each smaller grocery store card and the other side of the Velcro to the Game Board Shopping Cart. The child can then Velcro their cards onto their shopping chart! number of Players: A child can play individually or 2-4 children can play simultaneously.

directions: 1. The adult places the smaller set of the grocery cards on display out of the child’s direct sight. 2. The adult uses the larger set of grocery cards to a request which items the student needs to retrieve. The

adult assembles these grocery cards and then verbally tells the child what to “retrieve from the store.” 3. The student is expected to walk to the grocery cards, collect the items requested, and place them onto their

game board shopping cart. Note: Use the shopping chart with the number of squares that match the number of items requested from the adult (there are 5 different versions included based on the number of items specified).

4. The child returns to the adult with the specified grocery cards in their shopping cart. The child compares his cards with the adult’s cards to determine how well the child remembered “what to buy.” There are no winners or losers, the child aims to improve their performance with each turn.

variations: Because working memory is affected by distance and time, the task will be more challenging if the cards are placed

further away from the student. The complexity of the task will also be affected by the number of “grocery cards” displayed and the number of items being requested.

Modify distance between the student and the grocery cards; the closer the cards the easier the task. Modify the number of grocery items the child retrieves with each turn. Expect the child to retrieve less if he/she is

struggling. Modify the number of grocery items displayed in the store. With less choices the child may be more successful. Allow the student to see the grocery card that he/she is expected to retrieve. This will enhance their success by

providing auditory and visual cues. After telling the child the grocery list, encourage the child to verbally repeat it. This may help with recall.
