The Castle of Arcano, set amidst unspoiled, undulating hills it is among the most fascinating of Friuli, evocative of Medieval times.

Page 3: Let's explore europe through the castles trail

The castle of Arcano, was originally built near the church of San Mauro, along the banks of the River Corno, was erected upon the ruins of a Roman villa. It was later rebuilt in its present location, a site strategically more secure, probably towards the end of the 13th century.

Despite the loss of the tower, knocked down probably at the end of the 16th century, the castle still retains its captivating Medieval appearance; crenellated battlements, and a mighty keep with an elegant row of late Romanesque mullioned windows.

Ever since the 12th century the castle has belonged to the Tricano (on account of its coat of arms depicting three black dogs), marshals and gonfaloniers of the Patriarch of Aquileia.

The reception hall is the largest of all the halls in the castle. It is situated on the first storey of the palatium, the proprietor’s residence. A wood-burning fireplace with a precious marble mantle adds grandeur and warmth to the room. It is decorated with weapons, spears, and precious antique furniture including a remarkable iron-reinforced chest. There are also two large admirable portraits from the 17th century, one of which was painted by Fulvio Griffoni.

In the 17th century the castle of Arcano was the scene of a tragic event when Francesco d'Arcano, in a jealousy's rage, beat and killed his wife, whose remains were recovered from a wall during 20th century restoration work.

Owned by more than 420 years of family Della TorreFrom the manor you can enjoy a vast panorama ofthe steep cliffs overlooking the sea. In the parkthere is a bunker used during the Second World War.The castle was built on the ruins of a Roman outpost and incorporates a tower of the sixteenthcentury,Its construction was begun in 1389 by Hugh Duino captain of Trieste, to replace Castelvecchio ofwhich you can still see the ruins on a rocky outcropoverlooking the sea. After the death of Hugh, the fortress was inheritedby Ramberto of Walsee, brother of his first wife, who was responsible for completion during the first decades of the fifteenth century. He thenpassed to the Habsburg who passed it on tovarious noble houses German and Italian, and finally came to the family Hofer von Hoenfelswhose last descendant, Matthaeus, died in 1587. Since 2003, the castle is open to the public after ithas been fully restored after suffering extensivedamage during the world wars.

The castle is linked also to the legend of the White Lady, the wife of one of the lords of the manor, these cast into the sea and then transformed into the rock visible today in the bay, just off the coast.Legend has it that in a very remote time in the fortress of Duino lived an evil knight who despised hiswife gentle and virtuous. This loved him so much to forgive all offenses and hoped to soften his heart with loving words. The man, however, annoyed by the attitude of his wife, had devised a plan to kill her. One evening hepulled on a rock close under the walls of the castle to push it into the sea. Shocked the castle turnedhis eyes to heaven, asking for help. Just stifled a cry came from her mouth and was interrupted in hisgreat sorrow had been petrified. From that day to the time of the spirits the White Lady is detached from the rock and begins towander. Three times appears and disappears in the dark for so many rooms of the castle. He passesthrough the closed doors, wandering from room to room until they found the cradle in which time hisson was sleeping. There, the White Lady remains in profound silence until dawn, when he abandoned the cradle, returnsto his rock, where the pain turns again stone.

MAP OF PORCIA CASTLE

Page 13: Let's explore europe through the castles trail

HISTORY of the CASTLEFrom the twelfth century, the castle became the permanent home of the noble family of Porcia who ruled these lands for eight centuries. The building thus became the center of important political and cultural history of Friuli. Here stayed emperors Charles (1532) and Henry III of Habsburg, appreciating the good wine, cuisine and hospitality. Over time the castle has suffered particularly heavy damage by earthquakes which have compromised the original architecture.

• Reconstructions that followed have resulted in a total eclectic structure formed by buildings of different styles like a Renaissance palace and a building in Venetian style, which has been joined to what is left of the old castle, the imposing central tower from Middle Ages. This keep probably dates back to the year 1000, although some scholars even date back to the Roman period.

CASTLEThe Porcia Palace was built in different periods from the original core of the

central tower of the medieval setting, which has the base wall thickness of about three meters. The castle, built primarily as a defensive structure, has now taken on the look of a stately home.

VILLALTA CASTLE LOCATION

Page 25: Let's explore europe through the castles trail

VILLALTA CASTLE Villalta is the most

important medieval castle of Friuli, overlooking the plain of this region.

Page 26: Let's explore europe through the castles trail

THE HISTORYIts history is lost in the mists of time, as Roman foundations and traces of a fortified village testify to its ancient past. The castle dates back to the year 1000. The castle has been besieged in battles several times. Often it suffered partial destruction, but it was always rebuilt again between 1200 and 1400. To its monumental structure was added in 1500 a middle part, called il Palazzo. For centuries it had been the property of the Lords of Villalta-Caporiacco. In the sixteenth century the Counts della Torre, a powerful family from Lombardy (four of whom became Patriarchs of Aquileia) became owners of the castle through marriage and acquisition. Their battles with the Counts of Gorizia were long and fierce. The adventures of one of their family member, Count Lucio della Torre, a man of incredible wickedness and violence caused the Castle of Villalta to be taken by the Venetian Republic, called La Serenissima. The invasion by Napoleon’s troops in 1797 marks the most important although painful of recent events.

THE MAIN FLOORThe main floor of the Castle, decorated with 17th Century frescos, is composed by the Great hall, the tapestry drawing room, the Bernadotte drawing room with its French “grisaille” paintings, then the small library and the family drawing room, hung with portraits of ancestors.

LEGEND OF VILLALTA

CASTLEThe romantic atmosphere of the

castle is exhalted by the ghosts

which inhabit the ancient manor. One

is the ghost of the beautiful Ginevra

di Strassoldo, who was kidnapped

on her wedding day on her way to

Villalta, by Odorico di Cucagna, who,

loving her himself, did not want her

to marry Enrico di Villalta. The other is

the ghost of Caterina di Carpenedo,

lover of Lucio della Torre, who, when

tired of his young mistress, decided

to bury her behind one of the walls

of the wooden staircase which leads

to the first floor.
