From the Aspen Club office. We look forward to seeing you at our anniversary events in May.

Good health, happiness and humor to you.

Jill TaylorUCHealth Senior ServicesAspen Club Supervisor

Greetings.

A very wise man and longtime member came into my office the other day. He has been dealing with cancer for about a year, and, true to form, he came in with his customary ear-to-ear grin and proceeded to update me. Before he left, he shared this pearl of wisdom: “Life is a strange circus. Sometimes you have things tossed at you when you least expect it. So like it or not, it’s your job to deal with it and learn from it.” I looked at him and realized that his attitude, above all, would help him get through his next round of treatments. I knew that his grin and quick-to-laugh demeanor would impact the doctors, nurses and others who cared for him in a positive way. I knew his family would find comfort in this too.

This was just one of the many life lessons I have learned from members over the years. I count my lucky stars every day because of this, and I want to thank you. As the spring and summer seasons merge, I wanted to end with this quote: “If your mind is a garden and your thoughts are seeds, you can choose to grow flowers or choose to grow weeds.” My friend above has a beautiful field of flowers. How about you?

Caregivers and Receivers Enlightenment (CARE) conference. The Aspen Club works with many community partners—one of those is the Colorado State AARP office. This partnership coordinates many programs, including safe driver courses, annual shredding events, fraud and scam alerts, community walks and many caregiving courses. If you are a current caregiver or see this role in your future, please join usfor this beneficial CARE conference.

Four in 10 Americans aged 50+ believe they‘re likely to need care at some point in their lives. The truth is, seven in 10 Americans turning 65 today will need care for prolonged periods. Whether your future is in giving or receiving care, becoming enlightened, educated and prepared is important.

The CARE conference will talk about the benefits of a reliable social support system as we age. Research has shown that

“going solo,” or aging alone, is proving to be a daunting task for approximately 30 percent of our population. How can we be proactive in creating and maintaining mutually beneficial relationships? The bottom line is that we are all at risk of going solo due to death of loved ones or geographic isolation. The question then becomes how to minimize the risk.

We’ll also talk about the challenge of making difficult decisions related to complex medical situations. Over the past 50 years, advances in medical care have outpaced our ability to comprehend the ethical implications of our health care decisions. More often than not, there is not one right answer, so how can we identify the best answer for ourselves and our families? We will specifically address the issues of physician-aided death, palliative sedation and artificial nutrition and hydration at the end of life.

Registration for this day of enlightenment is required by June 20. There are two ways to register:• Call AARP at 877.926.8300 or register online at

Page 4: Let’s toast the Aspen Club’s Just look who will 30th ......a peek at some of the benefits: • Walking can reduce your risk for coronary artery disease. Walking 1.75 miles most

Walking is powerful medicine. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 145 million Americans count walking as part of their physical activity. More and more people are “hoofing it for their health” each and every year. The health benefits of walking are well documented in relation to weight management, in the prevention of chronic conditions and for improving mental health and cognitive function. Walking is one of the best things you can do, and, better yet, it’s affordable. Take a peek at some of the benefits:

• Walking can reduce your risk for coronary artery disease. Walking 1.75 miles most days of the week can help lower blood pressure and cholesterol.

• Walking is good for arthritis. It can help strengthen the muscles that support joints, shed pounds and reduce joint stiffness.

• Walking helps preserve bone health. Three 10-minute walks per day are as bone strengthening as one 30-minute walk.

• Walking helps increase the production of serotonin, dopamine and other brain chemicals that lift your mood, helping ward off depression.

• Walking has many sleep-promoting abilities. It can boost your daytime energy levels by helping you sleep longer and sounder at night. However, some people find that performing intense exercise revs them up so much that they have difficulty falling asleep. So if you intend to walk at a brisk pace, you may consider scheduling your walks at least an hour before retiring for the evening. On the other hand, an easy-paced late-night stroll may be just the thing to relax your body and clear your mind so you can fall asleep.

• Walking provides better blood sugar control, especially as we get older and become more resistant to insulin. Because people with diabetes can develop foot infections due to reduced blood flow, it’s important to get properly fitted for walking shoes.

Don’t forget: Aspen Club walking groups start in May. Also, see page 7 about a four-part series on ways to enhance your regular walking routines.

Exercise is good for your wallet. There are many trends in older adult fitness. However, the most significant is repackaging exercise as a disease solution. A recent study showed that people aged 50+ who started exercising just 90 minutes per week, on average, saved $2,200 per year in out-of-pocket medical costs. “What’s in your wallet?”

HEALTHY AGING

Enhancing wellness. Enhance Wellness is an individualized program designed to promote healthy behaviors and improve self-care through goal-setting and self-accountability. Included in the monthly classes are personal health coaching with a nurse, supervised exercise, a mind-body class led by a counselor and nutrition support with a registered dietitian. Participants will complete a comprehensive health questionnaire that helps identify areas of both concern and strength. A health action plan is then developed.

If you are ready to take control of your health, this is the program for you. The full program cost is $125. Scholarships may be available to help reduce this cost. Contact Julie Knighton, RN, at 970.495.7335 for more information or to join.

Lack of knowledge. Many people decline organ donation because of inaccurate information or assumptions about organ donation and transplantation.

I’m not healthy enough. The second most common barrier to becoming a donor is someone thinking they are not healthy enough to become a donor at the time of their death. In fact, 20 percent of Coloradans and 17 percent of Wyomingites haven’t registered because of this reason.

Who can be a donor? Anyone can be a donor, regardless of age, lifestyle or medical condition. Even those with chronic conditions can register to give the gift of life.

Just one donor can save up to eight lives through organ donation and save or heal more than 75 through eye and tissue donation. Are you interested in becoming a donor after death? Just say “Yes“ each time you obtain or renew a driver's license or state ID, or visit DonateLifeColorado.org or DonateLifeWyoming.org.

Learn more about the process and facts by attending the class titled Understanding the Gift of Life and Organ Donation at MCR on May 15. See page 9 for details.

Why don’t people sign up to be an organ donor?

Tai chi for fall prevention—looking for specific people.Tai chi helps prevent falls by improving balance and mobility, increasing leg strength and flexibility and reducing the overall fear of falling. The Aspen Club is proud to present Tai chi for fall prevention.

Participants who meet the following criteria meet twice a week for six weeks: • Never taken tai chi before. • Have fallen at least once in

the past year. • Able to attend at least 10 of

the 12 classes. • Want to decrease their

chances of falling in the future.

If this is you, please join us. This program has pre- and post-assessments, is conducted in a supportive environment and has a suggested donation of $12. Class size is limited.

Kate Gallagher with her mom, Gail.

A real story, close to home.Kate Gallagher was from Monument, CO. Despite her liver disease, she was able to save the lives of others through organ donation. At age 26, Kate was on the waiting list for a liver transplant when she suffered a cerebral hemorrhage and passed away. As an organ donor, she saved three lives that day. One of her kidneys went to a grandfather from western Colorado, the other went to a grandmother and her heart went to a 12-year-old girl who had suffered a heart attack on the basketball court.

Be part of CSU’s study promoting successful aging. All of us want to grow old with the best quality of life, including being as healthy as possible. How can we work toward this goal? The answer is for us to learn about the things we can do to optimize our own aging. A group of researchers at Colorado State University have developed a program that teaches adults how they can improve their own aging.

This new program, called AgingPLUS, has been tested for a few years and has shown several positive results. First, participants usually enjoy what they learn during the program. Second, the people who take part know more about what they can actually do after they have completed the program. Third, the majority of participants make some changes in their daily life to adopt a healthier lifestyle. Overall, participants find taking part in the program rewarding and helpful.

The AgingPLUS program is now being tested on a larger scale as a controlled trial funded by the National Institute of Aging. Because of this new funding, the researchers are looking for more men and women between the ages of 45 and 75 who want to take part in this new study.

Taking part in the study involves three steps:

1. You will be asked to come to two on-campus meetings for:• Assessment of your cardiorespiratory and physical fitness.• Filling out a packet of questionnaires.

2. You will attend four weekly educational groups for two hours each.

3. There will be follow-ups at four weeks and six months after you have completed the education groups. Participants will receive a modest payment for their efforts.

If you are interested in participating in AgingPLUS, please contact the ADAPT team at 970.491.5001 or email [email protected].
