Birth can be improved1 in 10 babies breathe insufficiently at birth. Around the world, this affects over 35,000 newborns and their families every day. These babies need all the strength and support they can get.

Scientists Prof. Arjan te Pas and Prof. Stuart Hooper and a team from Leiden University Medical Center developed a new way of working to give babies a “shock free birth”; clamping the umbilical cord at a time when the baby is fully stable and breathing on its own. This leads to a gentle switch from oxygen rich placental circulation to autonomous breathing and circulation.

This new approach is called physiological-based cord clamping.

Concord enables neonatal caregivers to provide lifesaving care with the umbilical cord intact for as long as needed. Close to mom, the baby gets maximum benefit from the blood from the placenta, up to the moment it is breathing on its own.

Delaying cord clamping has the potential to1,2:● Reduce complications at birth, like sepsis, IVH or NEC● Improve survival● Prevent long term disability● Reduce the cost of care

Key to the Concord Birth Flow is the Concord Birth Trolley.

The Concord Birth Trolley creates a safe workplace for neonatal caregivers to provide lifesaving care for the baby, with the cord intact for as long as needed.

The Concord Birth Trolley is a mobile trolley that can be equipped with all necessary devices for adequate monitoring and treatment of babies that need extra support during transition.

There no longer is any urgency to cut the cord, all necessary care can be provided immediately, while allowing to wait calmly with clamping the cord until the baby is fully stable and breathing on its own.

The first clinical study shows promising results3:

The Concord Birth Flow is a new care concept.

Obstetrics and neonatology caregivers collaborate at the mother’s bedside to provide the best care for the baby and its mother. Implementing the Concord Birth Flow therefore requires training, familiarizing all involved caregivers with the Concord Birth Trolley and the Concord Birth Flow.

Training is an inseparable part of our solution.

Introducing theConcord Birth Trolley

Cradle with opening for the umbilical cord.

Concord has a uniquely shaped cradle with a patented opening for the umbilical cord. The neonate, whether it is a very premature or term newborn, can be placed safely on the cradle, even with a very short umbilical cord connected.

Flexible positioning.

The cradle is mounted on a height adjustable and rotating arm, providing lots of freedom to position the baby very closely above mom.

Unobstructed access to mom.

The obstetrics team needs unobstructed visibility and access to mom. In case of emergency, the cord can be clamped and the cradle can be easily moved aside to provide immediate access. Stabilization of the neonate can be continued on Concord, also when the cord is clamped and cut.

Hospital configurable.

Concord is hospital configurable, allowing hospitals to attach their own familiar medical equipment, in accordance with local protocols and guidelines.
