Protek Specialty Company was started over 60 years ago with a vision by S. Eric Moore. His vision was to manufacture small specialized equipment that other companies needed in the oil and irrigation fields. Since then we have expanded into other related fields in moving and removing fluids. We continue to work hard at keeping his vision alive and our customers satisfied. No order is too small or too big for us. We simply want you, our customers and prospects, to be satisfied with our service and our products.

THE DIAPHRAGM PRIMER contains a rubber diaphragm working in an aluminum chamber. A levered handle attached to it by a connecting rod actuates the diaphragm. Air is drawn into the chamber through a suction valve on the up-stroke and discharged through a discharge valve on the down-stroke. The primer body is made of a light weight aluminum alloy. The diaphragm is of molded rubber, extremely tough and longwearing. A rubber air discharge valve, built into the diaphragm, provides a positive seal.

INSTALLATION & OPERATION:

1. Attach the mounting bracket to the centrifugal pump frame.2. Connect the primer suction inlet to the priming port on the centrifugal pump with a non-collapsible hose or flexible tubing.

Be sure all connections are airtight.3. If the primer is connected to a pump discharge, a cut-off valve should be installed in the priming line. This valve should be

closed immediately after priming to prevent the pump from discharging through the primer.4. If the primer is connected to the pump suction, a cut-off valve is recommended.5. A cut-off valve may be used on the pump discharge to prevent air from being drawn into the pump from the discharge

while priming.6. All primers are equipped with a drain valve installed in the suction chamber for draining excess water after each use. The

drain valve must always be closed when the primer is in use.7. When installing the handle bracket assembly, be cautious not to twist the connecting rod. Doing so may loosen the

connecting rod, possibly detaching it from the diaphragm assembly, which will prevent it from making a proper stroke.

FEATURES:

• The body is made of a lightweight aluminum alloy.• It can be easily mounted on most centrifugal pumps.• It contains a tough and durable rubber diaphragm.• All DP units come equipped with a drain valve.

APPLICATIONS:

Priming centrifugal pumps Priming water trucks Transferring water, fuel, and other liquids

TROUBLESHOOTING:

If you cannot get the DP to prime, try one of the following:

1. Make sure the drain valve is closed. The drain valve should only be opened after priming to drain any liquid in the primerbody.

2. Make sure there is no debris left inside where the check valve is. Any debris can cause clogging.3. Inspect the diaphragm for any tears or cracks.4. Check the line for any blockage or loops. The line must be straight and not twisted in any way.5. Check any strainers for blockage.6. Check all sections of the suction line for air leaks.7. If the connecting rod becomes loose, remove the bolts which connect the upper and lower housings, open the primer

and remove the diaphragm assembly. Tighten the jam nut located on the underside of the diaphragm assembly and thenreinstall by reversing the dis-assembling process.

THE EXHAUST PRIMER operates on low engine exhaust pressure. When the exhaust valve is closed, the gases are directed through the ejector nozzle and air is drawn from the suction line through the ejector suction.

FEATURES:

• Adapters are made of durable cast iron, which can be easily welded to the exhaust stack.• Adapters are also threaded to fit a standard exhaust pipe.• Ejectors and valves are made of solid cast bronze.• This simple design has no moving parts, eliminating wear and need for replacement.• Under normal conditions, suction lifts reach 15 feet in 1 minute and 20 feet in less than 2 minutes.• It fits all sizes of engines from 15hp to 600hp.• The exhaust valve can be closed after priming to prevent rain and dust from entering the exhaust stack.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

Plain-ended adapters are available in most sizes. When ordering primers, specify the pipe size and the thread of the exhaust stack of if a special adapter is needed.

*NOTE: It was previously thought that the Exhaust Primer wouldn’t be safe to use on turbo engines. However, we recentlydiscovered that this is not the case as long as the RPMs are kept between 1100 and 1200.

INSTALLATION & OPERATION:

1. Use the adapter to attach the ejector to the engine exhaust stack. The adapter is normally furnished with the exhaustprimer, which is made of cast iron. It is threaded to fit the standard exhaust pipe. ⅜” NPT fittings on the ejector suction, priming tee and priming valve are for attaching tubing and fittings.

2. The pump discharge should be closed while priming. This is usually accomplished by installing a discharge check valve.A hand-operated gate valve may also be used.

3. The vacuum gauge and priming valve furnished should be installed in the priming line with the gauge between the valveand the ejector.

4. The vacuum gauge should indicate a priming rate of 18-22hg. The engine speeds may vary, but for the best priming, thePSIs are normally between 12 and 15 psi, or between 1500-2300 RPMs.

5. After priming has been completed, the handle and brass cap are laid over 180° from the priming position to permit theexhaust to escape freely. The valve can be closed when the engine is shut down to prevent rain and dust from enteringthe exhaust stack.

THE MANIFOLD PRIMER combines all the time-tested advantages of using an engine manifold vacuum to evacuate air from suction lines, with the latest engineering design and materials. The internal parts are enclosed in a fully transparent dome, made of heat and shock resistant polycarbonate plastic, so that the operator can observe their functioning.* The primer can be used on vehicles that operate on gasoline or LP gas engines only.

FEATURES:

• Makes for fast, efficient priming using engine manifold vacuum while engine runs at low speed.• Easy to operate - simply start engine and open one valve to begin priming.• The primer can be used on a variety of multiple cylinder engines operating on gasoline or LPG.• The lightweight Nitrophyl float provides instant and positive closures when priming is completed.• The unit has fewer parts that would need replacing.• Its new design allows it to perform with added efficiency• The light weight clear dome is extremely durable and long lasting.• The unit offers 18 - 22 inches of vacuum.• It has a durable aluminum base which can be mounted on any surface.

INSTALLATION:

1. Primer may be installed under the vehicle's hood or a place of your choice outside the vehicle.2. Determine placement of the primer and prepare the area for installation.3. Once the area of the primer placement has been determined, raise the hood and remove the hose that is connected to the

brake booster (booster end only) and splice the hose about 12” inches from the booster end of the hose.4. Reconnect the two pieces with a hose tee.5. Connect the other piece of hose tee with a length of hose that will reach the area of the primer installation.6. Connect the end of the hose to the primer port that says “IN” and clamp all hose ends at the booster and primer. 7. Next, take a hose that will reach from the primer to the pump priming port.8. Take one end of the hose and connect it to the primer port that says “OUT.”9. Connect the other end of the hose to the pump suction line priming port.

*NOTE: When not in use, turn the primer off with the ball valve provided.

OPERATION:

1. With the ball valve on the priming line in the closed position, connect the hose from the primer to the priming port of your pump suction line.

2. Close your pump discharge valve to prevent air from interring from that side.3. Start your vehicle.4. Slowly turn the ball valve on the priming line on and watch for water entering the primer once water is present.5. Turn your pump on and open the discharge valve. Water should flow from your pump's discharge line. a) If water does not flow from the discharge, close the priming valve, turn your pump off and return to step 2. b) If water flows, close the primer ball valve, disconnect the primer line at the primer and turn your vehicle engine off.

MAINTENANCE:

• The chamber housing should be kept clean so that the operation of the float valve can be observed.• Clean the plastic parts with soap and water rather than gasoline or other harsh cleaning fluids.• When reassembling the primer, do not tighten the globe more than necessary to seal the gasket.

OPERATION:

When ready to prime, open the valve of the priming line and turn the prjmer on. Watch the water trap to see when water appears. When it appears, turn the pump on and close the priming line and allow the primer to run for 30 seconds before turning it off. A small amount of water entering the chamber may cause

SIDE SUCTION CENTRIFUGAL PUMP TIPS: A small amount of water entering the chamber may cause pre-rotation of the impeller, flood the water trap, and mislead the operator into thinking the pump is primed. Pre-rotation, or “pre-priming” can usually be avoided by inserting a packing gland through the pump casting about ¼ the suction diameter. To connect the priming hose to the suction pipe, place a hose barb (not included) in the port of the suction line and clamp a noncollapsible hose from the barb to the primer.

OUR POWER PRIMERS are built for fast efficient priming in pump installations with high suction lifts or extra long suction lines. We offer AC, DC, or gasoline units for a variety of applications. Ideal for large, diesel-powered irrigation pumps.

FEATURES:

• The self-lubricating vanes on the Vacuum Pump make maintenance easier.• The rugged steel and cast iron Vacuum Pump construction can handle the heaviest of duties.• The dual fan guards on the Vacuum Pump meet OSHA’s requirements.• The clean acrylic water trap housings allow the operator to see when the priming is completed.• The DC unit and Gas motor make these primers a good choice for use in remote areas far from electricity sources.• The electric cord supplied with the AC unit is 8 feet long so that it can easily connect to your pump’s power source. (115

volt only) 3 phase wiring must be supplied by the customer and installed by a certified electrician.• The solid steel base provides a sturdy mounting platform.• The coupling guard protects against damage and personal injury.

INSTALLATION:

TYPICAL HOOKUP ON DIESEL-POWERED CENTRIFUGAL PUMP:1. Mount the primer securely to a plate on the engine or the centrifugal pump. The primer should be high enough to allow the

water in the priming line to drain back into the centrifugal pump suction line.2. To save time and avoid inconvenience, position the unit to provide easy access to lubricators, filters, and mufflers.3. Install a hand valve between the power primer and the volute of the centrifugal pump. 4. For fast priming, the piping to the centrifugal pump suction should have a primer connection hole ⅜" or larger.

*NOTE: Priming should always be done from the suction side of the pump.

DOUBLE SUCTION OR SPLIT CASE PUMP TIPS:The priming line should be connected to both the suction channels at the highest point on the casting. Never connect the priming line to the pressure volute of the pump.

*NOTE: For DC motors, the manufacturer's recommendation is that the motor can be run for up to 30 minutes continuouslyat the name plate rating, then it must be shut down for 3 hours for cooling.

MAINTENANCE:

• The Vacuum Pump requires occasional flushing. Remove the pressure gauge and run ¼ cup of flushing solvent(GAST AH 225 or equivalent) through the pump. If the pump failed to produce a vacuum when it is first turned on, abrief warm-up may free the blades and restore the normal functioning. The initial inspection should be performed at500 hours.

• LUBRICATION: The automatic oiler should be refilled as needed with the proper oil. Use high detergent automotiveengine oil with a viscosity equivalent to SAE 10.

• AIR FILTER: Clean the air filter regularly by removing it from its holder and washing thoroughly in the solvent. Replacethe dried out filters.

• CONNECTIONS: Be sure all connections between primer and pump are tight.• BEARINGS: Bearing life is dependent upon pump application, proper lubrication, proper cooling, and general operat-

ing conditions.• VANES: Vane life is affected by general operating environment and such factors as pump speed, vacuum levels, and

duty cycle.

It's always a good idea to:

Clean any accumulated debris and filth from the water trap regularly.

Clean or replace the air filters when necessary.

Replace parts that show evidence of dryness or cracks, esp. for parts such as cork gaskets and rubber gaskets for the oiler.
