Elementary students worked enthusiastically during the last two Community Service Wednesdays making chocolate covered pretzels, hot chocolate spoons, drawing winter scenes, decorating 15 dozen cookies, and decorating lunch bags which they packed with all these goodies for the battered women’s shelter in Poughkeepsie, which is home to 26 children. Some of the cookies they decorated will be served at our Cookies and Carols holiday celebration.

Students also made holiday cards and sent them to Mrs. Schutz’s son, James, who will share them with other soldiers stationed with him at Bagram Air Base, Afghanistan.

Get the bear facts. Did you know?

• Most of a bear’s diet is plant based.

• Cubs stay with their mother for about 2 years to learn how to hunt and survive.

• Lean bears are fast. They can run up to 30 miles per hour.

• American Black Bears are good swimmers.•

The elementary student council collected contributions of hats, gloves, and mittens for a soup kitchen in Bridgeport, Connecticut, run by the sister church to the Salisbury Congregational Church. Residents in this area who were also affected by Hurricane Sandy, can get a free meal and visit the Church’s shop for free clothing including hats, gloves, and mittens donated by our Kildonan families. Thanks for your support.

Students gave a holiday choral performance at the Sharon Health Care center. Among the songs, they sang “Let There Be Peace on Earth, and Let It Begin with Me.”

Sy Miller and Jill Jackson were a husband and wife songwriting team. In 1955 they wrote a song about their dream of peace for the world and how they believed each one of us could help create it. In Sy Miller’s words: ‘This simple thought, 'Let There Be Peace on Earth, and Let It Begin With Me' first born on a mountain top in the voices of youth, continues to travel heart to heart – gathering in people everywhere who wish to become a note in a song of understanding and peace—peace for all mankind.”
