Heritage Preservation 6B Ronald Leung Wai Yuen

In the past, people were only aware of preserving physical heritage such as monuments or buildings

of architectural value. It is only quite recently that there has been rising concerns about preserving

the intangible cultural heritage. Cultural heritage, in its broad sense, refers to the collective

memories and customs which have a long history and resonance in a place. In Hong Kong, cultural

heritage ranges from unique festivals like the Bun Festival, arts and crafts to even food, like “Dai Pai

Dongs” and egg tarts.

Unlike other cosmopolitan cities, Hong Kong is not only experiencing rapid economic growth and

problems of high land rent but even unbalanced economic and cultural development and shortage of

experienced preservationists, which all hinder cultural preservation. As a result, Hong Kong is

obviously facing numerous hurdles in keeping its indigenous characteristics.

Some people may misunderstand that heritage preservation means keeping everything, which is not

true. In fact, “cultural preservation” does not mean that everything has to remain unchanged. It

means certain unique way of life or social practices should be kept as part of our cultural identity and

source of pride.

Hong Kong surely needs comprehensive policies to support its cultural heritage preservation. For instance, there are ten “Dai

Pai Dongs” in Central. However, some residents have negative opinions on such preservation owing to its poor sanitation,

ventilation and safety. To overcome the limitations and have sustainable development of the cultural heritage, the government

should provide subsidies to encourage stall keepers to upgrade their facilities. The construction of awnings is one such good

move. It not only improves hygiene by preventing the accumulation of foul water and rainwater but also the appearance of the

stall. Secondly, through designating zones for tables, a better ventilation of the walkway can be achieved. Thirdly, the

construction of gas pipes can guarantee safety and regular gas supply. If better images and public confidence can be developed

in society, more tourists and local people can be attracted to Hong Kong‟s cultural heritage.

The Bun Festival is another case proving that changes are necessary and beneficial to preservation. Originally the bun towers

were made of bamboo and the competitors climbed without taking any safety measures. After a tragic accident and with more

advanced technology, the towers nowadays are made of steel, which makes them more stable. Climbing instructors and safety

measures are provided for competitors as well. These all prove that positive changes made to the cultural heritage can give it a

Faith By 3B Li Ka Kin & Leung Yat Ka

Don‟t cry oh my friend

Don‟t cry oh my friend

The tears that run from your eyes

I promise you are not alone

Oh don‟t you see the big sky

The birds are flying so high

Because they trust in themselves and

Why don‟t you take your faith and life

And I will be by your side

Then you will see that: why you should be pride

* My friend your faith can make you soar

And take you fly, make you rise

And all the sorrows will die

Just hold my hand and let‟s prove the legends

You will find your colourful mind

My friend you don‟t have to live in loneliness, live in lies

Spread your wings and FLY –

Your dreams, they will not be so far

Because your faith has chased them all if just you can try!

new life and sustain its development.

Sometimes, commercialization can help preserve intangible heritage. New and creative strategies can be introduced to attract

tourists and customers who help sustain a traditional business. Take steamed buns as an example. In the past, the steamed buns

were only sold during the Bun Festival. Nowadays, there are a number of choices of bun fillings and they are available all the

year. More customers mean more revenue to support its development. Moreover, Cheung Chau villagers designed creative

products like dolls, phone holders and screen cloth based on the bun character. These new designs benefit both the designers

and the customers. For designers, the appreciation of their designs brings job satisfaction and motivates them to invest time

and money to continue with the practice. For customers, those creative designs and gimmicks arouse their awareness of the

cultural heritage.

Furthermore, cultural heritage can be developed into tourist spots. The mass media play a crucial role in promoting these

tourist spots. Magazine, in particular, often include brief introductions and recommendations on cuisine and tourist spots.

Such wide publicity is a key to heritage preservation. Let‟s imagine: if a tea restaurant can produce brilliant egg tarts and milk

tea, but few people know about it, can this intangible heritage be continued?

At school, there are few chances for the young generation to experience cultural heritage. Undoubtedly, information in

textbooks alone is not enough. Activities like participating in real Chinese Opera and Lion Dance should be included in the

“Other Learning Experience” in order to stimulate and arouse adolescents‟ interest in our own local Chinese culture. Also,

essay and photography competitions on cultural heritage can provide a platform for teenagers to take a closer look at them. The

awarded creations can be compiled into a collection so that the writers and photographers can get their rewards , and the readers

can have some collective memories to savour.

Preservation is always easier said than done. In Hong Kong, cultural heritage are more likely to be “preserved” by being

developed into great businesses. It is undeniable that commerce can be an aid of heritage preservation and sometimes it helps

people make a living, but never too much. It is unacceptable if people only see the heritage as money makers without their own

cultural values.

Despite Hong Kong‟s cosmopolitan surface, it focuses too much on economy at the expense of culture, which is the basic

necessity of human and cannot be replaced by shopping arcades or stocks. Apart from material wealth, what we equally need

is our own culture and collective memories. Cultural heritage is part of our soul and therefore should not be allowed to

deteriorate or disappear.

In short, unlike other developed cities, cultural heritage in Hong Kong are facing critical moments under the unbalanced

cultural and economic development and limited resources. In order to save our local culture in a sustainable way, we must

enhance the competitiveness and attraction of the heritage by making reasonable and up-to-date changes. Our culture is the

collective memories of Hong Kong people and should always be given a place at our hearts.

2. Lyrics Competition – Most Harmonious Award

Congratulations to 3B Li Ka Kin and Leung Yat Ka for winning „The Most Harmonious Award‟ in the

Lyrics Competition organized by English Builder. The theme of the song is „faith‟. You can actually listen

to the passion of the song when you go to Thinkseries of the English Builder website.

F.3 Cross-curricular Project(2009-10)

A Brand New Experience for all students and teachers

To facilitate the implementation of the New Senior Secondary Curriculum (NSS), the panels of

English, Moral and Civic Education, Computer Literacy and Integrated Science redesigned the existing

F.3 curriculum and jointly launched a Cross-curricular Project Scheme for F.3 students in term 2 this year.

The main theme of the project was “Healthy Living”. Students formed groups of five and conducted

an enquiry study in one of the following areas: Nutrition / Mental Health / Internet Addiction / Drug Abuse.

The objectives of this scheme are to develop students‟ project learning skills and thus lay a solid

foundation for Independent Enquiry Study of the

NSS Liberal Studies. From January to May, various

learning activities like skills training, outings /

interviews, group discussions / presentations and

face-to-face consultations with teacher advisors were

held in order to motivate students‟ learning and

enhance teaching and learning effectiveness.

The most challenging part, in both students‟ and

teachers‟ eyes, was the setting of the topic and

focusing questions (research questions) by students

themselves, while the teachers acted as the facilitators

of the progress. Both teachers and students found the

experience memorable and inspiring. F.3 students had their group discussion in the School Hall

2. Welcome to Our English Corner!

Starting from the second term, Mr. Stead has been meeting

groups of students on Thursday lunchtime in the CALL

room. Students all enjoyed chatting with our native English

teacher in the English corner.

A group of 3C students, including Terence Lee,

Brian Ho, Alfred Chan, Ivan Chu, Marco Chau and

Chadwick Hui, performed a play called „Teenage

Problems‟ in the Diocesan Schools Talent Show and

won high acclaim.

Although there is still room for

improvement and it is very challenging and

painful, I still think this project is very useful

and meaningful. Not only I have learned how

to make a good project, but also I have learned

how to cooperate with others and enhance

our relationship. If I have to choose one of the

most poignant experiences in F.3, then this

project would definitely be my choice.

Let’s Enjoy Farming

This year, the three science clubs, the Biology & Conservancy Club, the

Chemistry Club and the Physics & Electronics club, have merged to form the Science

Society. We aim at raising students‟ interest in science and introducing the latest

scientific knowledge to our schoolmates. This year, we have held a very successful

activity for F.1 students: Inter-class Organic Farming Competition.

In March and April, 5 representatives from each F.1 class participated in an

organic farming competition on the school roof top. In this competition, they

experienced the fun of farming and learned the principles of organic farming. They

had to follow the whole process : ploughing, sowing, irrigating, weeding, adding

organic fertilizer soil as well as germinating the seeds. Besides, they were also

requested to decide on and note the time of mitigation and the type and amount of

fertilizer to be added.

Under the guidance of the F.6 members, the F.1 students worked diligently on

their crops. After one month, they enjoyed the harvest and attended a debriefing on

correct farming skills. Finally the winner of the competition was F.1D.

當年 Miss Lai 是 CCC(Careers & Counselling Committee) 中一至中三 subcommittee I的組長。
