Look for Jesus action figure. Be sure to put a Star up high somewhere and place Jesus somewhere under it, but draw no attention to that fact, until the lesson.

11:45 GUS

Gus is working on a Jesus Puzzle – Looking for Jesus. It is too difficult for him. Karl says that we aren’t talking about looking for the word ‘Jesus’ in a puzzle, but looking for the real Jesus in our life and in the world around us. “Good” says Gus, because this was waaaaaay too hard. Offer to give it to the kids. At the end, pass out the LOOKING for JESUS puzzle to the kids. (see the end of lesson) Talk about what it means to be looking for Jesus.

11:50 SKIT

SKIT: Looking for Jesus A boy frantically looking for something. A friend greets him and asks what he is doing. “I am looking for Jesus, I can’t find him. Will you help me?” The 2nd kid goes into a speech about how you can not find Jesus in your room, he is not here on earth anymore. Just as the wise men had to look to the heaven’s to be directed to Jesus, so we must now look up and seek God above, for the heaven’s declare the handiwork of God. And yet, He is inside of each of is too, if we have accepted Him as our Savior. etc., etc., etc., other kid keeps saying, “Uh, huh, whatever” and continues to look. When ‘speech’ is over, he exclaims, “Ah ha! I found it! JESUS was in the dirty clothes!” And lifts up a nativity scene Jesus in a sock. The 2nd sighs, “oh, THAT Jesus. Why didn’t you say that Jesus. I should have known you’d find him in swaddling clothes!” (both exit)

STORY: The Wise Men Looked for Jesus Read Matthew 2:1-10 What we can learn from the Wise men

1. They studied the Bible. 2. Saw God in creation. 3. Were willing to go out of their way to find God. 4. Were filled with JOY when they found him!

Jesus is working all around us, are you watching? Are you praying? Are you looking for Jesus? Have you found him?

11:30 GAME

Name That Toy (Toy Picitonary) As kids come in have them write on a 3x5 card ONE THING they got for Christmas and turn it in. Put them all into a hat. (Don’t say what they are for, just say it is for a game.) Divide the room into two halves, and have a white board on each side. Each side takes a turn. Choose a kid from the first team (coin toss winner) and have him draw a card from the hat. He will have 30 seconds to draw what is on the card while his team tries to call out what they think it is. If they guess right, they get 100 points. If not, the other team gets 10 seconds to guess, but the drawing is complete. If the other team guesses, they get 100 points. Play several innings. The Point: Talk about the gifts. Talk about how great it is to give gifts. Ask what kids got LAST Christmas? Do any remember? What about the year before that? If they do, it will only be the most valuable – those are the gifts we remember – the gifts of great value. The rest are nice, but they fade. Jesus gave the Greatest Gift, and that is why we still remember it over 2000 years later!

11:55 GUS

Gus is wearing a price tag and has a calculator. What is the price tag for? He says that 1 Cor. 6:20 says we were bought at a price and so he is trying to compute the value of his salvation. He is taking the fair market value of the blessings he already has, multiplied by the number of days he has been alive, conservatively estimating the days he has left if he lives the average number of years, and then exponentially factoring the interest gained over an eternity of compounded dividends… HEY! His calculator broke!!! I guess you can’t compute the value of our salvation – it is worth everything.

OPTIONAL PUPPET ROUTINE: Gus: Hi, Pastor Karl! How are you? Pastor Karl: I'm really tired from all my Christmas shopping, but I'm fine. Gus: Oh, yeah. Christmas! I know who Christmas is. Pastor Karl: Who?? Christmas is a "what", not a "who". Well, actually, it is a "who". It's about a "who" anyway. It's about Christ and how he came as a baby. Gus: Oh, I know some songs about that! (Starts to sing loudly to the tune of Away in a Manger). Some hay in a manger and a kid dressed in rags.... Pastor Karl: (Stares at Gus for a moment). What in the world are you singing? Gus: A Christmas song I heard once. Pastor Karl: Well, you're singing it all wrong. It's "Away in a Manger", not "some hay in a manger" and it's swaddling clothes, not rags. Gus: Same difference. A whey in a manger, huh? Was Miss Muffet there? Pastor Karl: (Stares at Gus again). Huh? Gus: You know, a whey in a manger, did they have curds too and did a spider come down and scare the baby away? Pastor Karl: No, No, No. Not whey, AWAY, like far, far away, which is where I'd like you to be right now. Gus: Oh, sorry. I know the story though. Do you want to hear it? Pastor Karl: If I have to, I guess. Gus: Ok. It's a story about a baby who didn't want to sleep at an Inn, so he begged his parents to sleep

in a barn. That's where the manger comes in. I forget his parents' names, what are they again? Pastor Karl: You have it all wrong. He wasn't born yet, how could he tell his parents where he wanted to sleep? And anyway, he didn't want to sleep. He was getting ready to be born. And his parents'

names were Joseph and Mary. Gus: (Looks shocked). Did she have a garden and was she contrary? Pastor Karl: NO! She was not "contrary". It wasn't that Mary. This Mary was the mother of Jesus who was born in a stable. Gus: What's a stable? Pastor Karl: You know, it's like a barn with cows and sheep and.... Gus: (Interrupting) Oh, THAT Mary. The one that had a sheep follow her everywhere she went? Pastor Karl: (Moans). No, not that Mary either. Don't you remember this story? It's about the three wise men, the star, the shepherds and stuff like that? Gus: The three wise men? Were they the three men in the tub, rub-a-dub-dubbing? Pastor Karl: I think you are getting confused with nursery rhymes. This story is from the Bible. The shepherds saw the star in the sky and followed it, remember? Gus: Were they flying? Pastor Karl: NO! THEY WERE NOT FLYING. THEY WERE WALKING or ON CAMELS. There weren't any airplanes back then. Anyway, the three wise men brought the Christ child presents. Gus: Oh, I love presents! Did the baby get to unwrap them? My Mom won't let me because I eat the ribbon and the paper. What was in the presents? Pastor Karl: Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh. Gus: They gave him a monster???? Pastor Karl: Not Frankenstein, Frankincense...that's a sweet smelling spice. So is Myrrh. And I think you know what gold is. Gus: I don't like those presents. They should have shopped at Wal-Mart and bought him something to play with. Pastor Karl: I've got an idea. Why don't we go home and I'll find the story in the Bible and read it to you again. I think you've forgotten ALL of it! Gus: Oh, boy! I like it when someone reads to me. Can you tell me all about how the wise men

celebrated Y2K? I'm dying to know how it turns out! Pastor Karl: (Moans very loudly and exits). Originally written by Teri Couture, used by permission.

frankincense (Heb. lebonah; Gr. libanos, i.e., "white"), an odorous resin imported from Arabia (Isa. 60:6; Jer. 6:20), yet also growing in Palestine (Cant. 4:14). It was one of the ingredients in the perfume of the sanctuary (Ex. 30:34), and was used as an accompaniment of the meat-offering (Lev. 2:1, 16; 6:15; 24:7). When burnt it emitted a fragrant odour, and hence the incense became a symbol of the Divine name (Mal. 1:11; Cant. 1:3) and an emblem of prayer (Ps. 141:2; Luke 1:10; Rev. 5:8; 8:3). This frankincense, or olibanum, used by the Jews in the temple services is not to be confounded with the frankincense of modern commerce, which is an exudation of the Norway spruce fir, the Pinus abies. It was probably a resin from the Indian tree known to botanists by the name of Boswellia serrata or thurifera, which grows to the height of forty feet.

myrrh \Myrrh\, n. [OE. mirre, OF. mirre, F. myrrhe, L. myrrha, murra, Gr. ?; cf. Ar. murr bitter, also myrrh, Heb. mar bitter.] A gum resin, usually of a yellowish brown or amber color, of an aromatic odor, and a bitter, slightly pungent taste. It is valued for its odor and for its medicinal properties. It exudes from the bark of a shrub of Abyssinia and Arabia, the Balsamodendron Myrrha. The myrrh of the Bible is supposed to have been partly the gum above named, and partly the exudation of species of Cistus, or rockrose.

False myrrh. See the Note under Bdellium.

myrrh Heb. mor. (1.) First mentioned as a principal ingredient in the holy anointing oil (Ex. 30:23). It formed part of the gifts brought by the wise men from the east, who came to worship the infant Jesus (Matt. 2:11). It was used in embalming (John 19:39), also as a perfume (Esther 2:12; Ps. 45:8; Prov. 7:17). It was a custom of the Jews to give those who were condemned to death by crucifixion "wine mingled with myrrh" to produce insensibility. This drugged wine was probably partaken of by the two malefactors, but when the Roman soldiers pressed it upon Jesus "he received it not" (Mark 15:23). (See GALL.) This was the gum or viscid white liquid which flows from a tree resembling the acacia, found in Africa and Arabia, the Balsamodendron myrrha of botanists. The "bundle of myrrh" in Cant. 1:13 is rather a "bag" of myrrh or a scent-bag. (2.) Another word _lot_ is also translated "myrrh" (Gen. 37:25; 43:11; R.V., marg., "or ladanum"). What was meant by this word is uncertain. It has been thought to be the chestnut, mastich, stacte, balsam, turpentine, pistachio nut, or the lotus. It is probably correctly rendered by the Latin word ladanum, the Arabic ladan, an aromatic juice of a shrub called the Cistus or rock rose, which has the same qualities, though in a slight degree, of opium, whence a decoction of opium is called laudanum. This plant was indigenous to Syria and Arabia.
