W elcome to Trinity Church’s first service of the 2011 Christmas season. This afternoon we gather to hear lessons from the Old Testament, the Prophets and from the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. We gather to hear beautiful choral anthems and to join

in singing seasonal carols. We also gather to celebrate community—both here at Trinity and in the wider world.

A Service of

Lessons and Carols Organ prelude: Chorale Prelude on “In dulci jubilo” J.S. Bach all stand Carol: Once in Royal David’s City Irby

verse 1 - soloist Once in royal David’s city stood a lowly cattle shed, where a mother laid her baby in a manger for his bed: Mary was that mother mild, Jesus Christ her little child.

verses 2 and 3--choir a cappella He came down to earth from heaven, who is God and Lord of all, And his shelter was a stable, and his cradle was a stall; with the poor and mean and lowly, lived on earth our Savior holy.

And through all his wondrous childhood he would honour and obey, Love, and watch the lowly maiden, in whose gentle arms he lay; Christian children all must be mild, obedient, good as he.

verses 4 through 6--congregation & choir accompanied For he is our childhood's pattern, day by day like us he grew, He was little, weak, and helpless, tears and smiles like us he knew; And he feeleth for our sadness, and he shareth in our gladness.

And our eyes at last shall see him, through his own redeeming love; for that child so dear and gentle is our Lord in heaven above; and he leads his children on to the place where he is gone.

Not in that poor lowly stable, with the oxen standing by, we shall see him; but in heaven, set at God’s right hand on high; when like stars his children crowned all in white shall wait around.

Choral Offering: My Dancing Day John Sanders Fourth Lesson Micah 5 read by a member of the Vestry

The prophet Micah foretells the glory of little Bethlehem all stand Carol: The First Noel The First Nowell congregation & choir accompanied

The first Nowell the angel did say was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay; in fields as they lay, keeping their sheep, on a cold winter’s night that was so deep. Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, born is the King of Israel. They looked up and saw a star shining in the east beyond them far, and to the earth it gave great light, and so it continued both day and night. Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, born is the King of Israel. Then let us all with one accord sing praises to our heavenly Lord; that hath made heaven and earth of nought, and with his blood our life hath bought. Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, born is the King of Israel.

all stand Carol: Away in a Manger W.J. Kirkpatrick/arr. David Willcocks congregation & choir a cappella

Away in a manger, no crib for a bed, The little Lord Jesus laid down his sweet head. The stars in the bright sky looked down where he lay, The little Lord Jesus asleep on the hay.

The cattle are lowing, the baby awakes, But little Lord Jesus no crying he makes. I love thee, Lord Jesus! Look down from the sky, And stay by my side until morning is nigh.

Be near me, Lord Jesus; I ask thee to stay Close by me for ever, and love me, I pray. Bless all the dear children in thy tender care, And fit us for heaven, to live with thee there.

Choral Offering: O Nata Lux Morten Lauridsen

all stand Carol: It Came upon a Midnight Clear Carol congregation & choir a cappella

It came upon the midnight clear, that glorious song of old, from angels bending near the earth to touch their harps of gold: “Peace on the earth, good will to men, from heaven’s all-gracious King.” The world in solemn stillness lay to hear the angels sing. Still through the cloven skies they come with peaceful wings unfurled, and still their heavenly music floats o’er all the weary world; above its sad and lowly plains they bend on hovering wing, and ever o’er its Babel-sounds the blessed angels sing.

Yet with the woes of sin and strife the world has suffered long; beneath the heavenly hymn have rolled two thousand years of wrong; and warring humankind hears not the tidings which they bring; O hush the noise and cease your strife and hear the angels sing! For lo! the days are hastening on, by prophets seen of old, when with the ever-circling years shall come the time foretold, when peace shall over all the earth its ancient splendors fling, and all the world give back the song which now the angels sing.

This evening’s service of Lessons and Carols is based on the traditional service held each Christmas Eve in the Chapel of King’s College, Cambridge, England. The Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols was first presented on Christmas Eve in 1918. The then newly-appointed Dean of King’s College, Eric Milner-White, planned the service after his work as an army chaplain convinced him that the church needed different forms of worship. From year to year, the choice of carols has varied and newly commissioned works have been introduced. The original service was adapted from an order drawn up by E.W. Benson (later the Archbishop of Canterbury) for use in a wooden shed which served in 1880 as his cathedral in Truro. Almost immediately, other churches adapted the service for their own use. The first broadcast from King’s College took place in 1928. It has been broadcast every year (except 1930), and there are now millions of listeners worldwide.
