Lesson: Responding to questions
Grade Intended: Kindergarten
Length: 15 minutes
Academic Standard:
K.3.5 Understand what is heard or seen by responding to questions.
K.4.3 Explain why people in a community choose different jobs.
Performance Objective:
After reading a story, the students will respond to questions answering four offive correct.
Assessment:
An informal assessment will be taken to assess the student's knowledge. Theteacher will simply observe to see if the students are responding to the questions toprove they comprehended what they were read.
Advanced Preparation by Teacher:
The teacher will need to read Mr. Bumba's New Job by Pearl Augusta Harwood inadvance and create a list of questions to ask the students both during and after readingthe book.(Verbal-linguistic Intelligence)
Procedure
Introduction/Motivation: "Have you ever been asked a question after someonehas read you a book? What do you have to do to be able to answer the questioncorrectly? (Bloom's Knowledge) Well today we are going to practice paying attention sothat we can answer some questions about Mr. Bumba and his new job."
Step-by-Step:
• Gather students at the circle area.
• Read Mr. Bumba's New Job to the students.(Verbal-linguisticIntelligence)
• Stop throughout the book to ask students to predict what will happen next,and comprehension questions. For example, in the book when they aretalking about painting pictures on the fences, ask the students what they
might paint and have them show you what it would look like to paint afence. (Bodily-Kinesthetic Intelligence)(Bloom's Knowledge)
Closure: "What did we have to do to answer the questions? (Bloom'sComprehension) What do you think you could do next time to do a better job answeringquestions? (Bloom's Application) Good job today, tomorrow we are going to readanother book, remember when we read it to pay close attention so that you can answerquestions about it."
Adaptations/Enrichment:
For the student with the learning disability, he/she will only be asked threequestions rather than five. For the student with ADHD, they will be asked to sit closer tothe teacher so that they can stay on task. For the advanced students, they will be askedto go into more detail while explaining their answers.
Self-Reflection:
What went well? What should I do differently next time I teach this lesson? Howcan I better explain about paying attention so that they understand and can respond toquestions? Did the students like the story or should I choose a different one next time?
