In Genesis He is the Seed of woman who crushes the head of the serpent, Satan.

In Exodus He is the Lamb of

God who takes away the sin of

the world.

In Leviticus He is our High

Priest.

I. Priests and the Priesthood

• The priesthood is prominent in Scripture.• First reference: Gen. 14• Last reference: Rev. 20• Mentioned 700 times in the OT; 80 times in

the NT.• A priest was a mediator who stood between

God and man. Heb. 5:1

Jesus is our High Priest!

• “Therefore, in all things He had to be made like His brethren, that He might be a merciful and faithful High Priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people.” Heb. 2:7

• “Therefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our confession, Christ Jesus.” Heb. 3:1

Jesus is our High Priest!

• “Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession.” Heb. 4:14

• “For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin.” Heb. 4:15

Jesus is our High Priest!

• “So also Christ did not glorify Himself to become High Priest, but it was He who said to Him: ‘You are My Son, today I have begotten You.’” Heb. 5:5

• “Where the forerunner has entered for us, even Jesus, having become High Priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.” Heb. 6:20

Jesus is our High Priest!

• “For such a High Priest was fitting for us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and has become higher than the heavens.” Heb. 7:20

• “Now this is the main point of the thing we are saying: We have such a High Priest, who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens.” Heb. 8:1

Jesus is our High Priest!

• “But Christ came as High Priest of the good things to come, with the greater and more perfect tabernacle not made with hands, that is, not of this creation.” Heb. 9:1

• “And having a High Priest over the house of God.” Heb. 10:21

The priesthood of the OT was a foreshadowing.

• “For the law, having a shadow of the good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with these same sacrifices, which they offer continually year by year, make those who approach perfect.” Heb. 10:1

II. A high priest could only receive his position by DIVINE APPOINTMENT.

• No man could appoint himself to this position; he had to be appointed by God.

• Lev. 8:1ff; Exo. 28:1ff

• A few men attempted to serve in this capacity without divine approval.

Jesus is qualified to serve as our High Priest!

• “And no man takes this honor to himself, but he who is called by God, just as Aaron was.” Heb. 5:4

• “The Lord has sworn and will not relent, ‘You are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.’” Psm. 110:4

II. A High Priest had to be WELL-ACQUAINTED WITH THE HUMAN

CONDITION. • Heb. 5:1-3; Num. 15:22-31; Lev. 16:11

Jesus is qualified to serve as our High Priest because He knows what we’re

going through!• Heb. 5:7, 8• Phil. 2:6-7• Lk. 2:40, 52

In Leviticus He is our High

Priest!
