By the end of this lesson we will:

1. Be able to plan an essay on the poetry question

What AQA says:

“It was also evident that teachers are focusing well on comparison, with a substantial number of candidates achieving “structured comments on similarities and differences” (Band 4).

“It is one of the pleasures of marking poetry that unexpected and unusual interpretations are seen in responses: these will always gain credit if they can be justified by evidence in the poem and it is hoped that, during the course of study, students will be encouraged to find their own meanings.”

The question last year was:

Compare how poets use language to present feelings in ‘The Manhunt’ and one other poem from Relationships. (36 marks)

Task One

Fill out the table with all the similarities and differences that you can think about

Think about the quality of your answer. Don’t be lazy. Do you really think you will get even a C if you say that both are about ‘love’?

Task Two

Pick a poem and, using your notes, write a detailed paragraph plan for how to answer last year’s question.

The plan should:

1. Say what you are going to put in the introduction & conclusion2. Be at least 4 paragraphs long3. Should include what quotes you are going to use
