Did you know that the TGV can travel up to 320mph?

The many canals are a gateway from the Sea to the Atlantic Ocean!

People used to go to the for protection! They even took their animals with them!

You can still see the influence from the via the pillars that are still standing all of these years later!

Telling Time“Quelle heure est-il” means . To respond, you start your statement with: .

The French use instead of o’clock like we do in English.

To say in the morning, the French use:

To say in the afternoon, the French say:

To indicate in the evening, the French say:

Telling Time in French is simple! All you do is add the minutes after the hour! For example, 5:10 in English would be cinq heures dix in French! So, that means 4:25 would be quatre heures .

Just remember that you must include the word heures after the hour (you use heure for 1:00).

Just like in English, the French use different expressions for time.

- et quart means - you use et demie to mean , but leave

the e off when using it with midi and minuit!- When it’s a quarter til (or literally minus the quarter) the next

hour, you can use the expression

It gets a little tricky to tell time when the minutes fall after 30. When the minutes are between 31 and 59, you have to go up to the next hour and subtract the minutes. For example, 5:50 would be said six heures moins dix (literally, six hours minus 10).

Helpful Hints:

You can use the numerals (quarante, cinquante-cinq, etc), but only when using the 24 hour clock.

ex: 5:40pm = six heures moins vingt OR dix-sept heures quarante (but you can’t say six heures quarante).

ex: 10:45pm = onze heures moins le quart OR vingt-deux heures quarante-cinq (but you can’t say dix heures quarante-cinq)

Helpful Hints:

To say you are going somewhere using a mode of transportation, you usually use “en” before the mode of transportation.

en taxi, en voiture, en auto, en bus

exceptions: à pied, par le train

To ask someone how they get somewhere, you can say “Comment vas-tu (au parc, à la plage, etc)?”

La PronunciationThis lesson introduces you to the French sounds. Make sure you click all the play buttons and really practice saying what is spoken. This is a great lesson to return to throughout the course for tips on pronunciation.

Être à

We use être à to show possession, or what belongs to whom.* You usually only see the verb forms and since you’re talking about an item.

ex: Le livre est à moi. Les crayons sont à Paulette.

To ask to whom something belongs, you can use À qui ….

Ex: À qui est la voiture? À qui sont les chaussettes?

Lesson 6.05 Les VerbesVerbs talk about . They are usually given in the form.

Helpful Hints:

Infinitives are the basic forms of the verb. They mean TO ____________ (to run, to laugh, to jump, to eat, etc)

What are the 3 kinds of regular French verbs (verbs that follow a similar pattern?)

1)2)3)

However, there are some verbs that don’t follow a pattern. Those are called Irregular verbs.

What are the 3 irregular verbs you have learned so far in this course? (hint: you learned them in Segment 1).

1)2)

Page 10: Lesson 6:00 La Culture - learn.flvs.netlearn.flvs.net/.../HelpSite/French1Module6/Module6NoteT…  · Web viewLes Verbes: Match the verb to its meaning. entrera. to arrive. arriverb

3)

-er verbsThe most common type of regular verbs are –er verbs. Some examples are: jouer, écouter, regarder, adorer, chanter, etc. Please become familiar with the list of verbs on page 5 of the lesson.

You cannot always leave a verb in its infinitive form. Sentences like “I to play soccer” and “He to eat pizza” don’t make sense! You have to conjugate the verb, or give a different form of the verb so that it makes sense (I play soccer and He eats pizza).

For –er verbs, it’s simple!! Just follow these steps:

1. Start by crossing off the –er at the end of the verb. ex: jouer regarder

2. You are left with a stem (jou, regard)3. Add the following endings to the remaining stem:

Je - e Nous - onsTu - es Vous - ezIl/elle/on - e Ils/elles - ent

**remember to drop the E on je when followed by a vowel or vowel sound (ex. j’adore, j’habite)

Ex: Je joue Nous jouonsTu joues Vous jouezIl/elle/on joue Ils/elles jouent

Je regarde Nous regardonsTu regardes Vous regardezIl/elle/on regarde Ils/elles regardent

Helpful Hints: The verbs inside the boot all sound the same!

Helpful Hints:

When the infinitive ends in –ger, add an E to the nous form to keep the soft G sound.

ex: nous mangeons nous nageons

Let’s Review!! Remember that when you tell someone what to do or make a suggestion, you use the imperative. You use only the tu, vous and nous forms.

For –er verbs you must take the final S off of the tu form of the verb.

Ex: Regarde!

Regardez!

Regardons!

joue

joues

joue

-er verbs

jouent

jouons

jouez
