Evaluate expressions using the order of operations with assistance. Grade Level Students: The students will be able to: Evaluate expressions using the order of operations without assistance from teacher Advanced Level Students: The students will be able to: Create and solve expressions that require the use of the order of operations. Summary The students will be introduced to the order of operations and how to apply them to various expressions. IMPLEMENTATION Learning Context This lesson takes place at the end of a unit on integers. Procedural Plan Put 6 + 8 2 on the board and have the students solve. Most of them will say the answer is 7 when it is actually 10 Remind students that the order in which you perform the operations matters. Just like the order you make a PB&J matters. Give students PEMDAS foldable. An easy way to remember the order of operations is "please excuse my dear aunt Sally" P parenthesis If you see parenthesis you must complete whatever is inside first E exponents The next thing you look for is exponents. After you solve whatever is in parenthesis or if there aren't any parenthesis, you can now look for exponents M/D multiply/divide Next you look for an multiplication or division symbols. The key to this step is you must work from left to right no matter which comes first A/S addition/subtraction The last thing you look for is addition or subtraction. Just like multiplication and division you must work from left to right Lower Level Students Students will review the order in which the operations are to be completed. Students will be given a worksheet that require them to list the operations. Students will then complete various expressions with each step listed. The assistance of a teacher is encouraged. Grade Level Students students will be given a worksheet that require them to solve various expressions using the order of operations. Students will be required to have the steps memorized and will not have the steps provided for them. Students are encouraged to complete on their own and then check with a friend. Order of Operations Worksheet is to be completed with teacher during class as guided practice. Exit Ticket Above Grade Level Students: Students will be given a worksheet to review the order of operations. Students will then pick a partner and create their own expressions. Students will exchange papers and solve each other's expressions Review answers with students. Administer Exit Ticket Modification(s) for Diverse Learners Read instructions aloud Reread instructions if necessary Provide instructions in written form Allow extra time to complete problems Have students reread instructions in own words Have page numbers displayed for students to see Intensity and frequency of guided practice will depend on student comprehension of material Page 1 of 2
