Words to Know

At the Fair by Missy Cruller

Build BackgroundRead the title to children, and have them describe what they see in the cover illustration. Ask whether they have had any experiences at a fair like the one shown. Then ask: What are some things that people do at a fair? Why do people like to go to a fair?

Introduce the TextGuide children through the text, noting important ideas and helping with unfamiliar language and vocabulary. Point out the repeated sentence pattern See the. Draw attention to the kite that a character holds in each picture. Here are some suggestions:

Page 2: Explain that this book shows a mother, father, and daughter at a fair. On every page, the family sees things at the fair. Point out that the pictures have labels to name what is shown.Suggested language: Turn to page 2. Here is the family at the fair. What do they see? The sentence reads: See the people. Say see. What letter would you expect to see at the beginning of see? Find see, put your fi nger under it, and say it.

Page 3: Turn to page 3. What does the family see on this page? The sentence reads: See the balloons. Say the. The begins with the letters th. Find the, put your fi nger under it, and say it.

Page 4: Turn to page 4. What does the family see next? Remember to use the pictures to help you understand the story. Do you think the girl will get the fl ag she sees?

Now turn back to the beginning and read to fi nd out what the family sees at the fair.

Respond to the TextPersonal ResponseAsk children to share their personal responses to the book. Begin by asking what they liked best about the book, or what they found interesting.Suggested language: What would you like to do at a fair like the one in the story?

Ways of ThinkingAs you discuss the text, make sure children understand these teaching points:

Thinking Within the Text Thinking Beyond the Text Thinking About the Text

• A girl brings her kite to a fair.

• She sees balloons and fl ags, and she goes on a ride.

• She fl ies her kite with other people who are fl ying kites.

• Going to a fair is a special event.

• Flying a kite is fun to do with other people.

• The author wanted to show that a fair is fun.

• The kite is in every picture, so we want to fi nd out what it is for.

• The ending shows why the girl has brought her kite.

• Labels in the pictures help us read the sentences.

Choices for SupportConcepts of PrintUse a sentence from At the Fair to give children practice in fi nding the fi rst and last letters of words.

Phonemic Awareness and Word WorkProvide practice as needed with words and sounds, using one of the following activities:

• Listening Game Have children listen for beginning sounds. Have them raise their hands if two words begin with the same sound and keep their hands in their laps if the beginning sound is different. Say pairs of words such as these: fair/there; ride/rose; balloons/zoo; balloons/bath; kite/kitten; girl/boy.

• Segment Sentences Say a sentence of three or four words, speaking naturally, and have children say each word separately. Example sentences: I see you; Go to the fair; He saw rides; Fly the kite.

• ABC Order Materials: magnetic or cardboard letters, or letter cards. Have children choose letters and put them in ABC order.
