“Expanding” a number (making it longer) by naming each digits place value

When writing a number in “expanded notation”:
Steps:1. Name each digits place value
2. Place a “+” sign between each digit
Ex. 3,724
3 = thousands
7 = hundreds
2 = tens
4 = ones
In expanded notation: 3 thousands + 7 hundreds
+ 2 tens + 4 ones
