Lesson 4.8 ~ Graphing Radical Functions OBJECTIVES:

This should look very familiar! • A negative out front reflects over the x-axis. • A number out front stretches (if it’s >1) or compresses (if it’s <1) the graph. • A number directly attached to x within grouping symbols moves us to the left or right. • A number added or subtracted to the end of the equation moves us up or down.

This is a graph of our parent function. We will use transformations the same way we have in the past. 1. Move left or right

(horizontal translation). 2. Reflect over the x-axis and

stretch or compress. 3. Move up or down (vertical

translation).

The main points that we will move are (0, 0) and (1, 1).
