Put th e Hat on th e Cowpoke

Draw a large smiley face (with a cowpoke mustache) on a sheet of poster board. Cut out cowboy hat shapes from construction paper and attach a masking tape loop to the back of each one to play a game like Pin the Tail on the Donkey. Explain that every cowpoke needs a hat! Give each child a hat shape. Children take turns to close eyes and try to attach the hat nearest the cowpoke’s head.

Quilt Squar e Sha pes Cut a variety of colored paper (or fabric) into squares, rectangles, triangles, right triangles, etc. Make 10-15 for each child. Display photos of quilts and explain that in the Old West, people sewed together scraps of fabric cut into these shapes to make quilts. Kids explore ways of putting pieces together to make a quilt square. (Note: Keep this activity and reuse for quiet exploration. The combinations are nearly endless!) Provide square pieces of paper on which to arrange and glue down quilt pieces for a permanent art piece.

Wagon Whe elsProvide rice cakes, whipped cream cheese, stick pretzels and sliced olives. Kids use plastic knives to spread cream cheese onto rice cakes and then lay pretzels in a spoke pattern, placing an olive slice in the center for the hub. Kids roll finished wagon wheels right to their mouths!

Lesson 2

Int roducti on What do you think is in our trunk today? Remove printouts and mask or bandanna. Why do people wear a mask? (To hide.) Remove Bible. Our story is from the Bible! During our story, when I tell you, I want you to say the following:

God knows best; yes, it’s true. He should ask God what to do!

Practice repeating lines with children several times. Listen today to find out why someone wanted to hide! Lead chil-dren to do motions as indicated in story.

Tell th e Sto ryBaby Moses grew from a baby to a little boy. Then he lost a tooth. (Wiggle tooth.) He grew bigger and bigger and BIGGER! (Move hand to indicate height.)

As Moses got bigger, he lived in the palace with the Princess. She had adopted Moses when she took him out of the river, back when he was a baby! So Moses grew up like a PRINCE! He ate very fancy food. (Pretend to eat.) He wore very nice clothes. He had a soft bed. He had servants who did what he wanted.

But Moses knew he was NOT an Egyptian. (Tap temple.) He knew he was an Israelite. And Moses knew the Israelites were SLAVES. Their lives were SAD. (Make a sad face.)

Moses must have heard how bad things were for the Israelites. One day, he went to the place where the Israelites were working. He watched them working so VERY hard. (Wipe brow.) Then, he saw an Egyptian man start hurting one of the Israelite slaves—how MEAN! What should Moses DO? (Repeat phrase.)

God knows best; yes, it’s true. He should ask God what to do!

But Moses did NOT ask God what to do. He decided HE knew what to do. So, he looked left. (Look left.) He looked right. (Look right.) He didn’t see anyone looking. He jumped on the Egyptian. He beat him until the man DIED! Moses dug a hole and buried the Egyptian. He thought no one saw him. He thought he could hide. (Place mask or bandanna over face.)

BUT the very next day, Moses saw two Israelites fighting. He asked, “Why are you beating each other up?”

One said, “Who said YOU could tell us what to do? You killed the Egyptian. Are you going to KILL me, too?” UH-OH! People KNEW. NOW what should Moses DO? (Repeat phrase.)

God knows best; yes, it’s true. He should ask God what to do!

But Moses did NOT ask God. Soon, he heard that the king sent people to kill him! What should Moses DO? (Repeat phrase.)

God knows best; yes, it’s true. He should ask God what to do!

But Moses did NOT ask God. Instead he ran AWAY. (Show Lesson 2 Bible Story Art.) He ran to a place where he thought NO ONE would find him! He met some sisters and helped them with their animals. Their father invited Moses to live with them. Moses got married. He and his wife had a baby. Moses lived there for YEARS, caring for the family’s sheep. But all that time, he was hiding. Could he EVER go back to Egypt? What should Moses DO? (Repeat phrase.)

God knows best; yes, it’s true. He should ask God what to do!

Soon, God was going to tell Moses JUST what to do!

God’s Wor d & MeMoses didn’t ask God what to do! He did wrong and ran away and hid! But God loved Moses. He loved the Israelites. And He loves to make GOOD things come from BAD things. Show “Ultimate Wisdom” printout and read aloud. “Wisdom” means knowing the right thing to do! Jesus ALWAYS asked God what to do—and DID it! Our Bible says, “We can ask God for wisdom.” Let’s say our poem again—but let’s change “he” to “we”!

Repeat with children: God knows best; yes, it’s true. We should ask God what to do!

Pray, Dear God, help us to be wise like Jesus. Help us remember to ask You what to do. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Lesson 2

Int roducti on Open Story Trunk as you speak. Why do you think people hide? (Don’t like people. Don’t want to talk. Did something bad.) Where might a kid your age hide? (Bedroom. Tree house.) Show Wanted Poster. Look at this! What do you think it is? Where would you have seen a poster like this in the Wild West? Why? In today’s story, we’ll find out why Moses wanted to hide—and why he was one of “Egypt’s Most Wanted”!

Tell th e Sto ryAfter the princess took Moses out of the Nile River and Miriam had brought Moses’ mother to take care of him, the baby boy lived with his family until he was old enough to live in the palace with the princess.

Can you imagine going from a slave’s house to live in the PALACE? Now Moses had expensive clothes. He had fancy food to eat. He probably could tell any of the palace servants what he wanted—and he would GET it. That was pretty sweet! But there was one big problem: Moses knew that he wasn’t really an Egyptian—and not really part of the royal family. Even though the princess had adopted him, he was really an Israelite, part of a SLAVE family.

So Moses grew up knowing he was not really part of this

family. And he knew how sad the Israelites were and how hard they worked. He also knew how the Egyptians treated the Israelites. It wasn’t fair at all that the Israelites had to work so hard when they hadn’t done anything to deserve being treated like slaves!

One day Moses went out to where the Israelites were working hard. And while he was there, watching his people sweating under the hot Egyptian sun, he noticed a commo-tion. An Egyptian taskmaster was beating a Hebrew slave! Maybe this big Egyptian thought he could get more work out a slave who was bruised and sore! Let’s find out what hap-pened next in Exodus 2:11-12.

When Moses saw the Egyptian beating the Israelite slave, he got FURIOUS! This was WRONG! And he decided he was going to TAKE CARE of this problem HIMSELF! He didn’t pause for one breath to ask God what was the right thing to do. He may even have thought that God had forgotten the Israelites because they were still slaves. God had NOT forgot-ten them—but Moses wasn’t thinking about God.

Moses looked left. He looked right. He thought he was where no one could see him, so he jumped on the Egyptian. He KILLED him! Then he buried the body in the sand.

The next day, Moses went out again. He saw two Israelites who were fighting with each other. “Why are you two fighting?” he asked. “You’re brothers!”

“What business is it of yours?” one of them challenged. “Are you thinking of killing ME like you killed the Egyptian yesterday?”

UH-OH! Someone HAD seen Moses. And now, EVERYONE knew he had murdered the Egyptian taskmaster! Now Moses was REALLY scared. He knew it was only a matter or time until the Pharaoh heard about this. (Show Wanted Poster.)

Sure enough, the Pharaoh DID hear. Read what Pharaoh wanted to do about it in Exodus 2:15. Maybe there weren’t any wanted posters put up, but soon, Moses found out that the Pharaoh was going to kill HIM! What could he do? Everyone at the palace knew where he came from. They knew where his family lived. They knew where he went. They knew EVERYTHING about him! And of course, dressed in those princely clothes—he was EASY to find!

So Moses ran—he ran as far and as fast as he could go. He ran across the desert and into the mountains of a land called Midian. Maybe Pharaoh’s soldiers would not be able to track him this far away. Maybe NOW he would be safe!

Moses, no doubt exhausted and thirsty, found a well in that dry, rugged land. He sat down to rest and drink water.

Bible Sto ry Cen ter for older children Exodus 2:10-25

Sto ry TrunkBefore class, print out Lesson 2 “Ultimate Wisdom” Ultimate Point and Wanted Poster from Wrangler Roundup CD-ROM. Place printouts in a trunk along with a Bible. Before you tell the story, decide with chil-dren on a motion you can do for Moses (pump fist in the air, use fingers to make an M shape, etc.), the princess (use hands to make a crown shape on head, flutter eyelashes, etc.) and Pharaoh (cross arms over chest, scowl, etc.). As you tell the story, every time you say Moses’, the princess’s or Pharaoh’s name, lead children to do the motion you practiced for each name.

Lesson 2

64 © 2013 Gospel Light. Permission to photocopy granted to original purchaser only. Wrangler Roundup

But soon, seven young sisters came to the well with their enormous flock of sheep. They had come to draw water for their sheep. But as they began pulling up buckets of water, some big shepherds came along and tried to drive them off! Moses got up to help the girls. After all, he was already an outlaw, wanted for murder. It wouldn’t matter if he beat these shepherds up, too! He stood up to the shepherds and they left, probably growling because they didn’t want to share the water and the girls had gotten there first. Moses helped these sisters pour water into the troughs for the sheep and then sat back down.

The girls left with their flocks of sheep, but came back to invite Moses to eat with them. Their father really liked Moses and of course, it was great to have a younger man to defend these girls and their sheep! The father asked Moses to stay with them—and he even offered Moses his daughter Zipporah as a wife. Maybe that would keep him around to help out!

So there was Moses, in faraway Midian, with a wife and soon a new baby. He hid out there for FORTY YEARS. He must have wondered if he could EVER go home again.

But during that time, the Pharaoh who wanted to kill Moses died. A new Pharaoh took his place. But after all these years, things were NOT better for the Israelite slaves. They groaned and cried and prayed to God for HELP! Read what happened next in Exodus 2:24-25. God heard the Israelites. He promised to take care of them. He cared about them. And He was about to set events in motion that would lead the whole nation of Israel right OUT of Egypt and away from Pharaoh!

God’s Wor d & MeWhen Moses took matters into his own hands, his actions didn’t really help anything. It actually made things worse! But God had not forgotten His people. He had not forgotten Moses, either—Moses wasn’t hidden from God, no matter how far he’d run!

Read James 1:5 aloud from your Bible. Wisdom is know-ing the right thing to do—not acting out of our own ideas, like Moses did. According to this verse, we can feel safe in asking God what He wants us to do. He will give us wisdom when we ask and He never makes fun of us for not knowing what to do.

Show “Ultimate Wisdom” printout. When we talk about Ultimate Wisdom, we find that Jesus said a very interesting thing. In John 8:28, Jesus said He didn’t do ANYTHING on His own. He NEVER took matters into His own hands. He said that He did ONLY what the Father had told Him to do. Jesus showed Ultimate Wisdom!

Why do you think Moses killed the Egyptian? (Angry. Thought it was unfair. Decided he knew the right thing to do. Didn’t ask God for wisdom.)

What are some times a kid your age might be tempted to DO something without asking God for wisdom? (When mad or scared. When someone wants to fight me. When embarrassed. When friends are pressuring to do something wrong.)

What are other times a kid needs God’s wisdom?

What does our verse tell us we can do when we need wisdom? (Ask God for wisdom all of the time, like Jesus did. Choose to do what God says to do.)

Pray with children, thanking God for promising to give us wisdom when we ask for it.

Game Cen ter for younger children Exodus 2:10-25

Coll ectBible, Lesson 2 Pattern Page (p. 70), scissors

Pre par ePhotocopy two Pattern Pages for each group of five or six children. Cut apart pictures from one Pattern Page per group.

Do1. Children line up at one side of open play area, forming

teams of five or six children. Teacher places the pre-cut game cards facedown across the room from each team.

2. Give each group an uncut Pattern Page. Children take turns running across the room to collect a game card. Children run back to team and match card to the corre-sponding picture on the team’s Pattern Page. Other team members may help identify the matching picture.

3. Game continues until all cards have been matched.

4. Repeat game as time and interest allow, changing the way in which children move across the room each time (jump, gallop, walk, prance).

God’s Wor d“If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.”

James 1:5

For Younger Children:“We can ask God for wisdom.”

(See James 1:5.)

Jes us Con necti on Moses tried to solve problems on his own. I can ask God for wisdom like Jesus did!

Talk Abou t

Rocco, when Luke needed help matching his picture, you showed him where to place his card. It is good to help your friend solve a problem. Who are some other people who help us solve problems? (God, parents, teach-ers, coaches, etc.)

In the Bible story today, we learned that Moses tried to solve his problem his own way. What did he do to solve his problem? (Killed a man. Ran away.) Who could Moses have asked for help? (God.)

We can ask God to help us solve problems. Our Bible says, “We can ask God for wisdom.” Pray briefly, Dear God, thank you for giving us wisdom to do good things.

For Olde r Childre nMix the teams’ pre-cut game cards together and lay out in a grid, like the game “Concentration.” Children take turns col-lecting a game card and taking it back to match it to their team’s Pattern Page. If a team member collects a card that the team already has, child returns the game card to the grid and takes another.

Lesson 2

Coll ectBible, Wrangler Roundup CD-ROM and player, chairs; Optional: index cards, markers, tape

Pre par eArrange chairs facing outward in a large circle. There should be one fewer chairs than there are children.

Do1. While music plays, children gallop around the circle of

chairs. Stop music and call out, “Mount up!” Children quickly straddle chairs, facing the chair backs, and yell, “Giddy up!”

2. The first child to straddle their chair and yell, “Giddy up!” con-trols the music for the next round. Child left without a chair answers, or chooses a volunteer to answer, one of the questions below.

3. (Optional: Before playing the game, children make name cards for their “horses.” Each child tapes a name card to one chair. When music stops at end of each round, children must sit on their own “horse” and no chairs are removed. The challenge is to see who can get to their own horse first. That child not only controls music for the next round, but answers a question.)

Talk Abou t

In our Bible story today, Moses did not do something he should have done. What was it? (Didn’t ask God for wisdom.) When he tried to solve a problem his own way, what happened? (Killed a man. Ran away.)

Game Cen ter for older children Exodus 2:10-25

Moses ran away. Getting on a horse and riding off into the sunset doesn’t solve problems. What does our Bible verse tell us to do instead? (Ask God for wisdom.)

What do you think the word “wisdom” means? (To know the right thing to do in a situation.)

The Bible tells us that Jesus ALWAYS asked God what to do. What does God promise to do if we ask for wis-dom? (He will give it to us. He won’t make fun of us or find fault.)

God loves us. He won’t make fun of us. He WANTS to help us be wise. He wants us to ask Him what to do about EVERYTHING! Repeat James 1:5 together.

Lead children in prayer, thanking God for His promise to give us wisdom.

For You nger Childre nDo not remove any chairs after each round. After children “mount up,” call out actions for players to do as kids pretend to lead their “horses” on a ride (pull reins, pat horse, say “Giddy up!”, turn horse, say “Whoa!”). Choose volunteers to answer questions.

God’s Wor d“If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.”

Art Cen ter for younger children Exodus 2:10-25

Coll ectBible, dirt, large plastic resealable bag, rolling pin or hammer, large bowl, water, spoon, newspaper, paper or plastic bowls, card stock, small paintbrushes

Pre par eGather several cups of dirt that is not too sandy. Dirt should be as dry as possible. Place dirt in large plastic bag and use rolling pin or hammer to finely crush into particles. Place crushed dirt in a large bowl. Add water a little at a time, stir-ring with spoon until dirt becomes the texture of thick paint. Spoon some of the dirt paint into separate paper or plastic bowls, preparing one bowl for every two or three children. Spread newspaper on tables or floors where children will work and set bowls of dirt paint on tables. Set a piece of card stock and a paintbrush at each child’s place.

DoChildren use paintbrushes to cover card stock with dirt paint and then use paintbrush or fingers to make designs on the page. Use the Talk About suggestions as children work.

Talk Abou t

What do you know about dirt? Dirt is tiny particles of rock and dead plants, broken into tiny bits. When cow-boys are on the trail, there can be a lot of dirt in the air that gets into their noses. How do cowboys solve this problem? (Cover nose with a bandanna.)

When Moses had a problem, what did he forget to do? (Ask God what to do.)

When we have a problem, what can we remember to do? (Ask God for help. Ask parents, grandparents, teachers.) God knows the very best way to help!

Let’s say our poem from the story again. Repeat, “God knows best; yes, it’s true. WE should ask God what to do!” The Bible says, “We can ask God for wisdom.” God wants us to ask Him for help. He will help us know the best way to solve any problem!

Pray briefly, Dear God, thank You for Your promise to give us wisdom. Thank You for helping us know the best thing to do. In Jesus’ name, amen.

For Olde r Childre nChildren mix their own small bowls of paint. Bring examples of ranch brands (or show the ones on p. 110) and suggest that each child design a brand for his or her own ranch. Instead of using fingers, some children may wish to use a craft stick or cotton swab to create their designs.

Art Cen ter for older children Exodus 2:10-25

Coll ectBible, sharp knife (for adult use), cutting board, several pota-toes, small skewers, variety of acrylic paint, paint trays, plas-tic knives, white bandannas or fabric squares

Pre par eBefore class, use sharp knife and cutting board to cut pota-toes into thick slices, one for each child. Stick a small skewer into each potato piece. Pour paint into paint trays, spacing trays evenly around table and lay out a plastic knife and a white bandanna or fabric square for each child.

Do1. Children use plastic knives to create a shape on their po-

tato piece (star, zigzag, triangle, etc.) to make a stamp.

2. Children dip potato stamps into paint in a tray and then stamp paint on bandannas to decorate them.

3. Children return potato stamp to the same paint tray and then trade trays with another student to use a different potato stamp and color. Children continue trading and stamping as desired.

Talk Abou t

Why do you think cowboys need bandannas? (To keep dust and dirt out of their noses and mouths. To wipe sweat from their brows. To blow their noses.) A cowpoke uses a bandanna to solve lots of problems.

In our Bible story, what problem did Moses see? (An Israelite slave being beaten.) What did he do about it? (Killed a man.) What did Moses FORGET to do? (Ask God what to do. Ask God for wisdom.)

What did Jesus say about relying on God for wisdom? (He said He didn’t do anything without asking God first.) Jesus showed Ultimate Wisdom!

Repeat James 1:5 aloud together. Pray briefly, thanking God for offering to give us wisdom when we ask and that we can trust Him to always answer our prayers.

For You nger Childre nPrepare the stamps ahead of time by cutting shapes in the potatoes. For younger children, use plastic forks in place of skewers.

God’s Wor d“If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.”

James 1:5

For Younger Children:“We can ask God for wisdom.”

(See James 1:5.)

Coll ectBibles, Wrangler Roundup CD-ROM and CD player, song charts (pp. 250, 254), yarn in two colors

Pre par eCut each color of yarn into several pieces, varying the length of the yarn pieces. Toss the pieces of yarn all over the room—floor, shelves, chairs, etc. Write out the words and reference for James 1:5 on a large chalkboard or whiteboard.

Tea m GameStudents form two teams. Have you noticed there are pieces of yarn all over the room? This team will pick up (red) yarn. This team will pick up (blue) yarn. Tie the pieces together to make the longest yarn strand you can! Ready? GO! Team members work together to gather and tie yarn pieces to-gether, measuring finished strands to see which is longer.

Bible Ver se GameRead James 1:5 aloud with children. Choose volunteers to choose which words to erase (one or several at a time)—but the word chosen must begin with the same letter as their name (or contain it). Between each erasure, read the verse aloud together. When all words are erased, repeat the verse once more!

Son gYou, or another leader, lead children in singing “Stronger Than Anything,” adding motions and/or clapping if desired.

Prayer Today we talked about what Moses did NOT do—and how it “tied him up in knots”! Get back into your teams. Each time you untie a knot in that yarn, someone names a situation in which a kid could pray for God to help them know what to do. Then lead children in prayer, thanking God for promising to give us wisdom when we ask Him and asking Him to re-mind us to rely on His wisdom like Jesus did.

Son gYou, or another leader, lead children in singing “He Will Provide,” adding motions and/or clapping if desired. God promises He will provide us with wisdom when we ask! Let’s remember to rely on God’s wisdom and ask Him to show us what is best to do in every situation!
