Lesson 1 Introduce the new text- the Lost Happy Endings. Look at the front cover- what do you think the book will be about? What type of story does it remind you of? Who is on the cover? What do you think their role is in the story? Look at their face- how are they feeling? What type of person do you think they are? Look at the trees- what can they see? Turn to the page only with the forest (before the book starts) how does that make them feel? Why? What makes them feel that way? Discuss the idea of colours etc does this remind them of any fairy story they know? Look at the picture on page 1 before reading- what do you she is doing? What does it make you feel? What lets you know that this is in the style of a fairy story? Magical? ask chn to write any vocab on whiteboards they hear that is interesting or they do not know the meaning of. Read page 1- how do you think Jub feels? What type of character do you think she is? Look at the picture from page 2 what does it remind you of? How does the forest look? How does it make you feel? Read pg2 – this is a page for particularly interesting language. Discuss the imagery created using similies. Look at picture for page 3 what does her home look like? How does that make you feel about Jub? What things help you create a picture about Jub’s personality- eg animals/colour read page- think pair share- what type of character is Jub- remember to use because in your answer. Pg 4 look at the picture- how is the character feeling? What is it like in the forest? Read page- collect interesting phrases/unknown words-scarves of mist/noosed itself/villainous etc how is the author trying to make you feel? (something bad is about to happen etc discuss how he does this) pg 5 look at the picture think pair share what is happening and how it makes you feel. Read the page- collect language face like bark etc how has the author created tension? Look at language- how the author didn’t just write red like berries-he used poisonous-why? How does the author show you the witches character?
