“Where’s the nearest. . .?”

Directions: Have students write and practice oral directions using the following locations. Assume the students are giving directions from the parking lot of the classroom they are attending to the location.

For example: the nearest grocery store 1. turn right on College Way2. turn right on Dewar Drive3. turn right on Gateway Blvd. 4. turn left into the Wal-Mart parking lot

Lesson #6: Map vocabulary, directions and general use

Objectives: LI – 20: Give directions to a local building or place LII – 19: Follow a series of directions. For example: turn right, go

one block, turn left, etc. LIII – 16: Locate state and town of residence on a map. LIII – 17: Use cardinal directions (North, South, East, and West), to

find a location. LIV – 11: Read a recreational map LV – 12: Plan a trip using a road map.

Vocabulary: OPD pages 117, 122-125

Activities: OPD beginning workbook page 107 World Map worksheet

(Instructors will need to have a world map with a detailed map of the US for the students to use)

Discussions: Have you ever planned a trip? What did you do to plan? (ex. Look at a map, internet?) Do you use maps often? Do you know where to obtain free local

maps?Chamber of Commerce’s are a great resource for maps and local information, as are local phone books.
