Additional Information on Research/Scholarship/Creative Activities FUNDED GRANTS AS PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATOR
Principal Investigator: Using physician communication to increase parental control of tobacco products. 2010‐2011. Funded at $20,000 by the American Academy of Pediatrics. The purpose of this study was to train pediatricians to intervene with parents, encouraging them to keep their tobacco products away from children. Sponsor: Tobacco use in survivors of childhood cancer. F31 grant submitted to NIH by graduate student Lisa Schum under direction of Leslie Robinson as sponsor. This award would fund the student’s dissertation research. Funded. Principal Investigator: Cigarette smoking in late adolescent African Americans: The influence of parental models. Funded by a University of Memphis Faculty Research Grant; $3,514 (1994‐1995). The purpose of this small study was to clarify the relationship between parental smoking and the decision to smoke in a group of late adolescent / young adult African Americans. Caucasians were also included in order to estimate the relative importance of parental smoking for the two ethnic groups. A sample of 1,371 young people (both smokers and nonsmokers) were recruited from a variety of sites (e.g., colleges, beauty schools, the police academy, etc.). All participants were administered a survey assessing smoking practices and a variety of background variables thought to be related to the decision to smoke. The results indicated that parental smoking was, as expected, related to tobacco use in young adults. Further, when parents smoked, cigarettes were considered to be significantly easier to get. These findings underscore the importance of encouraging family members not to smoke and of warning smoking parents that they may potentially serve as a source for tobacco products. Principal Investigator: Meta‐analysis of post‐smoking cessation weight gain. Funded by the National Institutes of Health (NHLBI); $386,337 (1996‐2000). This FIRST award was designed to conduct two meta‐analyses pertaining to weight gain in individuals who have stopped smoking. The specific aims of the first were to identify which types of individuals are most at risk for substantial postcessation weight gain and to clarify the impact of methodological characteristics on estimates of weight gain. The second study focused on evaluations of treatments that could reduce postcessation weight gain. Its specific aims were to evaluate which, if any, treatments were most effective in the prevention of weight gain after smoking cessation and to determine whether some types of treatments were more effective for specific kinds of patients. Principal Investigator: The LeBonheur Smoking Prevention Program. Funded by the Partnership for Women's and Children's Health, Memphis, TN; $2,200,000 (1996‐2003). *Note: Bob Klesges, Ph.D., is also PI on this grant. Smoking prevention programs have most often been developed and evaluated with Caucasian populations. While their outcomes with such populations are generally positive, much less is known about effective smoking prevention in African American youth. This grant was awarded to fund the development and evaluation of a smoking prevention program specifically tailored for the ethnically diverse population served by the Memphis City Schools. It was designed so that half of the schools were randomly assigned to receive the intervention each year from seventh grade through graduation from high school. Students in the remaining schools served as controls. Surveys were administered each year to determine the effects of the programming on students attitudes, knowledge, and use of tobacco.

Principal Investigator: Factors mediating teen smoking prevention: The impact of teacher knowledge, beliefs, and behavior; Funded by LHS, Memphis, TN; $18,000 (2000). Most research on adolescent smoking focuses on the youth, their friends, or their parents. However, teachers may also serve as an important influence on student attitudes toward tobacco use. This small grant aimed at evaluating the attitudes, knowledge, and smoking practices of Memphis City Schools high school health teachers. Because their students also participated in the LeBonheur program (see above), we could also determine the relation between teacher variables and student outcomes. Principal Investigator: Smoking onset in a biethnic population. Funded by NHLBI/NIDA; $1,100,000. 2001‐2005. Few studies have examined the determinants of smoking onset in young African Americans, even though it is suspected that their smoking patterns follow a different natural history than those of Caucasian smokers. This grant was designed to address this issue, by following the participants of the long‐running Memphis Health Project into young adulthood. By assessing tobacco use and background variables each year, the study addresses 4 issues: (1) the extent of young adult onset and cessation in a biethnic population; (2) the predictors of late smoking onset; (3) the predictors of conversion from experimental to regular smoking; and (4) the predictors of cessation in young adulthood. Principal Investigator: Middle school drug prevention and school safety evaluation. Funded by the Memphis City Schools; $28,188. 2001‐2003. This study with the Memphis City Schools provided ongoing evaluation services and statistical reporting for a school safety program already funded and in progress. Principal Investigator: A community campaign to reduce youth tobacco use. Funded by the TN State Health Department; $57,311. 2002‐2003. This study with the State Health Department was aimed at supplementing our work in the schools by disseminating information about tobacco use, particularly about tobacco control laws in Tennessee. Principal Investigator: A community campaign to reduce youth tobacco use. Funded by the TN State Health Department; $57,311. 2003‐2004. This study with the State Health Department provided funds for the construction of a web site listing resources in the Memphis area for treatment for tobacco addiction. Principal Investigator: Developing a smoking cessation program for adolescents. Funded by the National Institute for Drug Abuse. $942,000. 2003‐2007. The few studies of cessation programs for adolescents to date have yielded disappointing results, even when strong randomized controlled designs have been used. Nonetheless, we know that most adolescent smokers want to quit, and many have actually tried to quit 3‐4 times by the time they finish high school. The purpose of this study is to gather data from young smokers concerning the strategies they spontaneously use to try to quit, the types of issues that motivate quit attempts, and the barriers interfering with success. We are also exposing young smokers to potential components of quit programs, and gathering data regarding the acceptability of these treatment strategies with youth. These data will then be used to build a model program in the third year of the grant.

Principal Investigator: Minority supplement: Smoking onset in a biethnic population. Funded by NHLBI. $54,320. 2004‐2006. This grant funds Ms. Danette Garces, a graduate student in clinical psychology, for research tied to the smoking onset parent grant referenced above. Principal Investigator: A Workshop on Motivational Interviewing. Funded by Psychology Dept SFEF Committee. $1500. 2005. This award allowed us to organize a day‐long workshop featuring Dr. Linda Sobell on MI open to all members of the Psychology Department and selected members of the community.
Appendix C Additional Information on Research/Scholarship/Creative Activities FUNDED GRANTS AS Co‐PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATOR
Co‐Principal Investigator: A community campaign to reduce youth tobacco use (Riedel, B, PI); Funded by the State Health Department; $57,311 (2001‐2002). Co‐Principal Investigator: Professional services for tobacco risk reduction/education project in selected city and county schools (RV Reynolds, PI); Funded by the Memphis and Shelby County Health Department; $30,456 (2000). This contract represents a sizable supplement to the LeBonheur grant (see above). Its specific aims are to support administration of the program in 16 schools, provide for a workshop on youth tobacco use for school‐based personnel, and provide incentives for student participation in the prevention program. Co‐Principal Investigator: A school‐based smoking cessation program for adolescents (RC Klesges, PI); Funded by NIH; $1,875,973 (1998‐2001). Despite prevention attempts, the majority of young people do experiment with smoking. In fact, an extremely common school violation is tobacco consumption in the school setting. This grant used this opportunity to enroll adolescents in a smoking cessation program designed specifically for teens. Co‐Principal Investigator: Smoking onset in a biethnic population (RC Klesges, PI); Funded by NIH; $552,272 (1998‐2000). This grant funded the second phase of the long‐running Memphis Health Project. During this grant period, the students were in grades 11 and 12. As in the earlier grant, the methodology involved surveying students annually regarding their smoking practices and background variables thought to influence smoking onset. Co‐Principal Investigator: Public health conference support grant program (M Levy, PI); Funded by CDC and the Department of Psychology, University of Memphis; $9,000 (1998). This grant provided funds for a conference aimed at giving educators and health care professionals information and skills on current strategies for reducing cigarette smoking in ethnically diverse populations of young people.

Co‐Principal Investigator: Nicotine replacement products: Prevalence of use and sources of access in minors (LM Klesges, PI); Funded by the Partnership for Women’s and Children's Health; $30,000 (1998). Therapeutic use of nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) for youth under age 18 has not been recommended. However, adolescents may still use NRT, because it is easily available over the counter. This grant was designed to monitor the extent and character of use of NRT by 11th graders participating in the Memphis Health Project.
GRANTS THAT DID NOT RECEIVE FUNDING
Principal Investigator: A collaborative proposal for the State of TN. $2,000,000 requested (2007 – 2012). (No response from the Health Commissioner, who decided not to use the allocated moneys for research) The purpose of this proposal was to create an integrated program of tobacco control for the State of Tennessee guided by The University of Memphis, Vanderbilt, and ETSU. Principal Investigator: Administrative supplement. Submitted to NHLBI; $40,000 requested (2005‐2006). (No priority score: Insufficient funds were left over to make this type of award that year.) The purpose of this administrative supplement is to offset the costs of lab flooding due to a Memphis storm. Principal Investigator: Smoking Prevention in the Workplace. Submitted to NIH (2001) Priority Score of 272. This application would have funded randomized controlled trial of a worksite‐based program to deliver anti‐smoking messages to new employees. Treated employees would have been tracked over time to determine whether their onset rate was systematically lower than that of untreated controls. (Note that concerns have recently risen about the rate of smoking onset among young adults entering the workforce.) Principal Investigator: Family involvement in smoking prevention. Submitted to NIH (1998). Priority Score of 241. This application was aimed at testing the impact of a family education intervention on smoking onset among youth. In addition, it would have evaluated the effects of a family smoking cessation program on the rates of tobacco use in both adults and adolescents. Sponsor: Computer and Internet‐based interventions for smoking cessation: A meta‐analysis. F31 grant submitted to NIH by graduate student Ashley Jackson under direction of Leslie Robinson as sponsor. This award would fund the student’s dissertation research Co‐Principal Investigator: Center of Excellence for Health Promotion Economics (C Chang, PI; Robinson as Chair of Core). Submitted to the Centers for Disease Control. Priority Score of 268. This center grant would provide the funds to create the infrastructure for a center of health promotion economics at The University of Memphis. Dr. Robinson would service as Associate Director of the Center for Health Promotion Economics, as well as Co‐Director of the Health Disparities Core and as Investigator.
