UNITING CHURCH CORNER

Each week short inspirational messages appear in the Wayside Pulpit (a fancy name for the notice board). Some are quite thought provoking, many contain a simple message of faith and some are just for a laugh. “Don’t count the days, make the days count” - “God answers kneel-mail” - “To lead the orchestra, you must turn your back on the crowd” – “Is your prayer well done or rare?” Worry is like a rocking chair; it’s something to do but it won’t get you anywhere.” Watch for more messages this month! The final Kokoda Youth Local event is on Wednesday 16th August with a “Talk the Walk” evening at the Uniting Church (7:30pm). During the evening, there will be a cheque presentation of the local funds raised. The Op-Shop operates daily, Monday to Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Revenue is used to support the Church and its work with a percentage of each week’s takings donated to local charities. The regular Sunday morning service time is 10:00 a.m. with our supply ministers Rev Bob Thomas and Victor Buhagiar. There is a time of fellowship after each service – a great way to meet people and have a talk while sharing a cup of tea or coffee and a biscuit.

Leopold Community Bank has formed a partnership with the Leopold Football/Netball & Cricket club as well as the City of Greater Geelong to provide a grant to enable the scope to be increased of the facilities at the Leopold Memorial Reserve Pavilion Redevelopment.

Branch Manager Craig Taylor said “This is a great local project and we are excited to support the development of the facilities at the Memorial Reserve. We are providing $100,000 in a grant to ensure the facilities can be enjoyed by many local Community groups now and in the future by increasing the floor space. We see this as an important community asset, but it’s only with the help of the community that we can make it a reality.”

Funding projects like this come about by the community banking with the Leopold Community Bank. So if you are looking at a banking rela-tionship, access to great banking products and services as well as re-ceiving premium customer service then come in for a chat. To add to this your banking contributes to worthwhile projects in our local commu-nity like our support for the development of sporting facilities at the Leo-pold Memorial Reserve.

By banking with us you are contributing to building your community in a big way. Why not drop into the Leopold Community Bank Branch at Gateway Plaza or phone us on 52501057?

DATES TO REMEMBER

Feast of the Assumption: Tuesday August 15th

Parish Dinner: Monday 9th October 6:00pm at Clifton Springs Golf Club. Bookings- contact Parish Office 5251 2502

WINTER APPEAL- Can you lend a hand? With the onset of such a cold winter many are requiring help. The Saint Vincent de Paul Society needs volunteers to assist those in the

Leopold area – you could visit the sick and lonely or drop off food to those struggling or ill. Help is also needed at the St.Vinnie’s stores and Samaritan House. Have you an hour or two to spare? Please phone Karenne at the Parish Office on 5251 2502. Thank you.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

We have had many great days in July. 60 children received the Sacrament of Confir-mation. It was a wonderful occasion and Bishop Mark Edwards attended to conduct the ceremony. In the weeks prior to this many children made their First Reconciliation and received their First Eucharist. I congratulate all these students and give special thanks to their teachers and supporters. May you all follow the message of Jesus as you travel on your Spiritual Life Journey.

Family Mass is on the First Sunday of each month please join us at St Thomas Church at the 9am Mass on August 6th. Stay for a cuppa and chat.

We celebrate the Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord on Sunday the 6th of Au-gust. We remember the Apostles’ experience on the mountain where Jesus was transfigured in radiance and thus could keep alive a flicker of hope that as we have to undergo suffering and trials in our lives we will be offered entrance into eternal glory. So pray to the Lord, sustain Faith when it wavers in difficult times- take strength and continue on your Faith journey.

God Bless you, Father James Puppady

RED CROSS

GOLF DAY

This yearly zone fundraiser will be on Monday October 23rd at Portarlington. We’ll have full de-

tails for all golf enthusiasts in September’s issue. The corresponding raffle has some travel priz-

es this year; not Europe river cruises, but for only @=$2 a ticket, any holiday is welcome.

AGM

We had a full house for our annual meeting on August 2nd. Ros Leigh represented the ‘brass’

and presented long service awards to Maureen Walker (20 years) and Val Mills (40). Our mighty

doorknocking Mary was given a well deserved ’Gold Logie’ for her footslogging efforts. All office

bearers stayed put as no one else was chomping at the bit to replace them - surprise, surprise!!

Lois is President, Val is Secretary and Dragon Lady is Treasurer.

CHOCOLATES

Each year branches are asked dto run a Cake Bake, with proceeds going to Head Office general

funds. We cheat by having chocolate drive instead. It’s much tastier selling frogs etc, and eating

half of them ourselves, than slaving over a hot stove to produce something that someone else

will devour. Our ‘cakes’ sent $350 off to the HO coffers.

BUNNINGS

Our zone was given the chance to have a BBQ at the North Geelong store on 23/7. Leopold

members wo-manned the last shift of the day, which also included clean-up. The earlier shifts

had to cope with drizzle, then downpours and rivers running through the tent, but the skies ran

dry once we arrived. The $1400 profit from 730 sausages and 2 dozen cand of drink was well

worth the effort.

A 2013 athletics medal on a ribbon, possibly from Kardinia College, arrived at Pearly Gates Op-

Shop recently, hiding in the bottom of a bag. It can be reclaimed from the shop or contact the

Dragon.

LEOPOLD MENS SHED August 2017. The eighth month. Where did the other months go? If you have kept a diary you will be able to see that you haven’t wasted that time. At the Shed we have certainly not wasted our time.

We have found 2 or 3 new members.

We have re-positioned our vegie garden.

Built shelving.

But best of all we have enjoyed each other’s friendship.

A year or so ago someone left us with a soft rocking horse and a similar hippo. I think that they were fixed the same day. I have no contact details for the owner. We will be selling them at our garage sale in October unless they are claimed beforehand.

We have put up the Men’s Shed sign out the front of Club Italia. It may be a bit small but for now we are leaving it as is.

By the time you read this we will have elected our committee of management. The AGM is/was – 28 July 2017.

Many of the items we have made are at the community shop in Ash Rd. Feel free to visit and find out what is there. We mend and make things with no guarantees of completion. We do not want to become an industry and certainly we do not want to take work away from local tradespeople.

We like to feel free to potter about and to talk and enjoy the company.

Men, feel free to come down and have a cuppa and see what you think of the Leopold Men’s Shed.

Phil Hayden Ph 0422 737 753.

Well-known Leopold and former Drysdale resident, Peter Gibbs, has resigned from our group – to enter a new

phase of retirement. We wish Peter and his wife every happiness and good health in their new adventures.

Peter has been a longstanding, hard-working, dedicated and loyal stalwart of our group, his presence

enhancing greatly the comradery and outcomes achieved since our inception in 2002. Thank you Peter!

Trail users and motorists will also have seen the ‘improvements’ carried out by Vic Roads in constructing a

‘centre safety island’ where the rail trail crosses over High Street in Drysdale – adjacent to the Drysdale Railway

Station / Lake Lorne area. This improvement has been actively advocated by our members (and others) on the

CoGG Bellarine Rail Trail Advisory Committee – for several years, and also in letters to local newspapers, that

all highlighted safety concerns here. Whilst one cannot say this completely solves the crossover safety issue –

the eventual construction of the Drysdale Bypass will reduce markedly the volume of traffic coming through this

area, so the problem will reduce somewhat then.

For those that haven’t stopped to read the ‘plaque’ which was placed (May 2015) on a prominent rail trail rock,

near the heritage shelter at the rear of the Curlewis golf course, the inscription reads:

“The improvements to this section of the Bellarine Rail Trail were developed by the City of Greater

Geelong in partnership with the Victorian Government.”

Finally, in recognition of the work that our volunteer group does on the trail, our CoGG supervisor publicly

expressed his gratitude to our members at a recent morning tea, held at Christies Road heritage shelter- a vote

of thanks much appreciated.

Trevor Jennings,

For the Friends of the Bellarine Rail Trail.

FRIENDS OF THE BELLARINE RAIL TRAIL

The Leopold War Memorial looks a picture and continues achieve one of its objectives in providing a place for quiet reflection for members of the community. On a couple of occasions recently I have met people at the memorial taking the opportunity for some quiet time to remember loved ones who went to war for Australia. The City of Greater Geelong will maintain the memorial lawn and surrounds the lawn has been mowed and these arrangements will continue into the future. Committee member, Peter Jeffreys, is in discussions with the Council about resolving the problem of water draining from the basin area. Peter has taken levels around the site and is assisting in finding the right solution for the problem. A section of the concrete wall of the drainage pit at the corner of Stringers Lane has been cut out allowing for the drain to be lowered Council workers will lower the level of the open drain in the next couple of weeks, which will see the basin drain as required. Following our request a floodlight will be installed on the power pole on Melaluka Road, this will also be completed in the near future. We have a number of acacia plants -100 or so – to be planted at the memorial site, we will choose a date in September when the ground is starting to warm, to call on our generous community members to participate in a working bee to get the job done. The Leopold War Memorial committee is open for members of the community to join, if anyone would like to join us you are most welcome. THE AUGUST GARDEN

It’s exciting to see some glimpses of spring in local gardens with the gorgeous pink blossoms of weeping apricots. These are a stunning plant that is a real feature in a garden and there are several reason why. Firstly, what else starts flowering or budding up in the first month of winter and continues with some blooms almost into early spring? Secondly, the blooms start on the older higher wood towards the top of the branches, and hence the top of the weeping plant, and progressively opens further down the stem towards the ground. Then there is the gentle perfume, particularly enticing in the evening. Use this plant as a stunning feature in your garden, preferably where it is protected from strong winds and in a sunny location with a well-drained soil. This is one of the first of the “blossom” trees to flower and merely starts the progression of blossom from late winter through to late spring, so make sure you have an ornamental flowering cherry, plum peach, apricot or almond to enjoy a traditional blossom tree in your garden.

Spend some time this month working on the soil in your vegie garden. If you’ve grown a green manure crop over winter then it will just starting to flower so dig it back into the soil now to give it time to break-down a bit and enrich the soil ready for you to plant edible crops in for spring and summer. Dig in some well rotted compost and manure later in the month. There are still plenty of options for planting in the vegie garden in August; seed potatoes, asparagus crowns, Jerusalem artichokes, chunky rhubarb crowns, spinach, silverbeet, spring onions and some raspberry and boysenberry canes, along with strawberry plants can all go in now.

Is your garden showing signs of damage from the few heavy frosts we have had in the last month or so? It won’t look pretty with blackened ends to some bushes and a wilted look on the tips. Don’t worry, we are all in the same situation and the secret is not to prune off the damaged tips as they will protect tissue further down the stems from damage if we have more frost. So, grin and bear it and get on with other jobs in the garden. Later this month it will be time to start feeding many of the plants in your garden. Roses should have been pruned by early this month and sprayed with lime sulfur to help clean up scale, mites and fungal spores that can cause problems. Get onto spraying peaches and nectarines with a cop-per based fungicide to help assist with prevention of leaf curl disease as well as shot hole and freckle. A bit of care now helps prevent problems later in spring in regards to these diseases.

Plant some winter flowering Kniphofia ‘Winter Cheer’. These South African red-hot pokers make large clumps with bright orange and yellow flowers on 1metre stems and the birds love the nectar. They make a great cut flower and are lovely and cheerful in the garden this time of the year when the light level is generally lower. They are extremely hardy and will grow in full sun or a position with half a day of direct sun.

Spray citrus with white oil to control scale and citrus leaf miner. Prune out any stem cankers as soon as possible. These galls or cankers house a wasp that will hatch in spring and spread further if not pruned out this month.

Prune back grasses and sedges such as Pennisetum (Foxtail grass), Carex, Lomandra, Poa species and Mis-canthus. This will promote new growth in spring and clean up old foliage.

Plant winter roses (Helleborus) in dappled light under deciduous trees and other semi-shady locations. They are hardy once established and will bloom in late winter and into spring. They come in a wide range of flower colors including white, pink, yellow, lime green, plum and burgundy in both single and double flower forms and spotted blooms as well. Dig in some well rotted compost and animal manure and mix it with the existing garden soil to get them off to a good start.

CHURCH UNDERGOES MAINTENANCE.

During early August, the Lumen Christi Catholic Church will be

undertaking roofing improvements to address damage being caused by pigeons. The works will also include the provision of

netting to reduce future impacts by pigeons on the building.

During these works, mobile infrastructure owned by Telstra on the building will need to be switched off, to ensure the safety of the workman on site from any RFE impacts. While there is mobile coverage available from nearby towers, some

customers may notice a decrease in their experience during the outage.

Parish Priest of St Thomas Parish, Fr James Puppady says, “It’s an important project for the church, ensuring our contin-ued services to the community of Leopold. In part, thanks to our valued relationships such as Telstra, we can ensure the ongoing maintenance of our church.

The infrastructure works are anticipated to start on the 1st August and conclude by 11th August with the Telstra equipment switched off at intermittent times during this period.
