LEONARDO DA VINCI’S VITRUVIAN MAN
By: Rebecca McPherson
Multi-Cultural Element:
Vitruvius, a Roman engineer of the first century B.C., influenced Leonardo da Vinci's drawing of the Vitruvian Man. It is based on a model of ideal proportions which Vitruvius established.
Upon viewing the drawing the conclusion can be made that the length of a man's arm span is equal to the height of the man. In other words the ratio of the Vitruvian Man's arm span to his height equals 1.
Investigative Question: Is the ratio of our arm span to our height really equal to 1?
Performance Expectations and Formal Assessment:
Ratios (PE): Students will calculate the ratios of each student’s height to arm span.
Graphs (PE): 1.) Students will use class data to create a graph of corresponding
height and arm spans. 2.)Students will use class data to create a graph showing the
ratios of height to arm span. Journaling:
- detect similarities and differences among the data - explanations that show understanding and logical reasoning - distinguishing between relevant and irrelevant information- building systematic and coherent connections among pieces of
information- testing for internal inconsistencies or fallacies.
-Room 602 has one student who qualifies as an English Language Learner (ELL), although there are others who would benefit from those services.-Room 602 has one student who qualifies for special education services in reading, writing, and math.

Students will be sent home with a modified version of the packet they worked on in class. They will be encouraged to measure the height and arm spans of everyone in their family, calculating the ratios of each. They will have an opportunity to share their findings in class the following day.
