Navigating the Turbulent Waters of Middle School

Page 22: Lenape Middle School Welcome to the class of 2021

Guidance ServicesWe’re here to help

• Member of Academic Team• Student Scheduling• Academic Placement• “Safe Place” for children at school• Support for parent and child during difficult

times• Liaison between home and school

Page 23: Lenape Middle School Welcome to the class of 2021

Monitoring Academics

• Together with your child:– Identify a consistent place and time for homework– Check the agenda book daily– Monitor teacher websites to be proactive: what is going on in

each class, daily assignments and upcoming assessments– Check the Parent Portal weekly to see results of graded tests

and classwork

**After the first marking period, adjust your involvement depending you’re your child’s ability to manage independently

Page 24: Lenape Middle School Welcome to the class of 2021

– Have one family meal together each day

– Show an interest in things they enjoy

– Listen without judgment when appropriate/Only offer advice if asked

– Choose your battles

– Take advantage of teachable moments

– Offer praise for specific accomplishments

– Look at yourself-are your own reactions contributing to the conflict?

Maintain open lines of communication with

your child

Page 25: Lenape Middle School Welcome to the class of 2021

• Ask Questions & Demand Answers (you are still the parent and they are just a child)

It is your right and responsibility to know what they are doing, where they are going, and with whom (Parents Bill of Rights)

• Know Your Child’s Friendsinvite them to your home; show an interest through conversation; communicate with their parents;

• Stay Alert-watch for signs of distress-unexplained drop in grades, change in friends, sudden popularity, drastic change in appearance or hygiene

• START Team

• Understand the Impact of the Media (TV, Movies, Computer, Facebook/Instant Messaging, Cell phones, Video games, Music) They provide in-your-face exposure to sexual activity, violence, substance use, etc. Young people see this and believe it to be a normal part of their day-to-day life. (teachable moments)

• Supervision is important: • School work, hanging out in town, sleep-overs, electronic communication• don’t cut the apron strings-they need guidance and direction now more than ever

• Balance the need for independence with the security of parental structure• More freedom = more opportunity to get into trouble

Who’s the Boss?Stay in Control

Page 26: Lenape Middle School Welcome to the class of 2021

Prepare your child for bumps in the road

• Help your child learn to be resilient • Growth vs. Fixed mindset

– You are smart vs. you can work this out if you keep trying

• Teach them to expect & face the challenges they may encounter– Being proactive will help avoid larger issues of anxiety

and school avoidance– Not all conflict is bullying

» some conflict is age appropriate» work on ways to address peer issues that arise

– Academic stress may occur-you may fall behind or get a bad grade from time to time. » help them manage their time» encourage them to ask for help when they need it» Remind them that failure is not a permanent

condition

• Encourage GRIT• GRIT is hard work and perseverance over a long period of time

Page 27: Lenape Middle School Welcome to the class of 2021

Hang In there. Seek support from family members, professionals,

school personnel-you are not in this alone

Don’t cave in to the pressure from your peers or from your children.

Stay in touch with each other and form a united front. It is much easier to stand firm if you are all giving your

children the same message. But even if the other parents are letting their children do something you

don’t approve of, hold your ground.

It is a bumpy ride but your child will survive and so will you.
