The trend towards more ‘digital’ amplifi ers is well under way, and there are very good reasons for this.

Firstly, we are moving towards a more “digitally sourced” world every year, so having audio amplifi ers available which put the appropriate priority on digital inputs and inbuilt DACs had to happen.

Secondly, digital circuitry for the amplifi cation itself can pay dividends in several ways, not the least of these being sheer effi ciency. There’s much less energy wasted in the form of heat when using digital amplifi cation, and the power consumed by them is more thoroughly converted to current to drive loudspeakers.

Then there’s the accuracy, plus the low noise fl oor that digital amps can achieve. All of these things, plus a few more side benefi ts of a practical nature, start to explain why both Peachtree and NAD are full stream ahead into the digital era.

PEACHTREE’S DIGITAL AMPS... FULL STREAM AHEAD

Nova125

The Peachtree Nova125 (from $1699, pictured below) breaks new ground for the Peachtree Nova series in being a high powered (125w x 2) integrated at a low price. The look will be familiar, but under the bonnet you’ll fi nd exceptional performance.

The ESS Sabre 32-bit 9023 24/192 Upsampling DAC is the world’s fi rst chipset designed from the ground up to eliminate the anti-musical, high jitter levels that are commonly found in computers and digital

streamers. Using a patented process called Hyperstream, the Sabre DAC buffers the incoming digital bitstream and reclocks it from thousands of picoseconds of jitter to less than 3 picoseconds. That means your computer, your smart phone or other streamer can be given sonic performance equal to the world’s best CD players.

The 24/192 asynchronous USB input has a major impact on the overall sound quality of the Nova125 and represents a huge technological

leap from the previous Nova and iNova. Asynchronous communication keeps digital jitter at bay by not relying on the audio clock in the computer, which can get thrown off time by the thousands of processes running in your operating system’s background. The USB input on the Nova125 provides the best possible resolution, which enhances the efforts of the ESS Sabre DAC.

Galvanic Isolation blocks electrical noise from all of the digital inputs on the Nova125. Computers and digital streamers are prime sources of electrical noise. Electrical noise, even noise that you can’t hear directly, masks fi ne details and distorts the tone of music. Galvanic isolation eliminates this noise.

The Tube Buffer can be switched on via a button on the remote control to add a dose of warmth and take the hard edge off compressed audio sources like MP3s. The single 6N1P triode will last years for the average listener – it’s easy to change and inexpensive.

The 125-watt per channel Power Amp is the newest generation of Class-D technology. It takes audio performance to a whole new level with advances including extended bandwidth, improved dynamic range and exceptionally low distortion. These high current output stages can comfortably drive any speaker load from 2 ohms. This amplifi er has enough muscle to power any speaker you use and sounds great at any volume. It’s clearly a winner in all ways, including value for money.

The Headphone Amp enables you to listen in solitude without sacrifi cing sound quality. Most headphones need more than the tiny amount of power that trickles out of the headphone jack from your computer

The Peachtree decco65 (from $999) also takes an existing successful model and upgrades it in power and technological aspects. The ESS Sabre Digital to Analog Converter is widely recognised as the world’s best DAC when dealing with hostile digital components like computers and streamers. Jitter is all but eliminated, leaving a beautiful digital canvas as a base. The art of this DAC comes in with the hundreds of additional parts and multiple power supplies designed around the ESS chip that work in unison to produce the Peachtree sonic signature.

The 24/192 Asynchronous USB Input provides the best possible processing from this port and furthers the efforts of the ESS Sabre DAC. Asynchronous communication allows a high precision clock inside the decco65 to control the timing of the bitstream from the computer to the DAC. USB implementation is one of the more diffi cult tasks in the real world of computer audio.

Galvanic Isolation, typically reserved for more expensive DAC circuits, prevents electrical noise from entering the DAC board on all grounded digital inputs. Any contamination due to the switching power supply, multiple ground points and high speed processing is isolated from the DAC, so nothing but pure 1’s and 0’s reach the DAC circuit.

The Tube Buffer uses a stereo 6N1P triode to smooth the harsh digital edge found in poor recordings and compressed audio. It can be switched on or off from the remote control to match your preference at any given time. We fi nd it especially good for Pandora, MOG, Spotify and most cloud-based listening.

The amplifi er section of the decco65 uses the same technology found in very expensive premium amplifi ers. This high performance Class-D design has the ability to drive 65 watts per channel into 8 ohms and 95 watts per channel into 4 ohms with a very natural sound – the sonic signature of a great Class-A/B amp with the power effi ciency of Class D. Its combination of low distortion, high bandwidth and energy effi ciency make it the ideal partner to the input section.

The Headphone Amp in the decco65 switches the speakers off when your headphones are inserted, so even when a quiet environment is required you can still fi ll your head with lush high-resolution music. The headphone output runs through the tube stage so you can enjoy that smooth tube sound in solitude.

All things considered, this is a very affordable price for an amazing performer.

The tendency to chase the price of Blu-ray players downwards has ended up lowering the performance of the often very

good surround sound systems they are used with. It’s possible to buy ‘well-known brand’ players from $249 up, but the consequence is that the system they are attached to will underachieve badly compared to one which uses – for argument’s sake – a player from Oppo costing $699 – namely the BDP-103, of which we’ll say more later.

To really make sure you’re getting all the performance your system is capable of, step up to Oppo’s next level, the BDP-105 ($1499), which is one of the best performers to hit the market to date, at any price. In the February 2013 edition

There are so many upscale components crammed into this beast that at fi rst glance under the lid it looks more like the internal topography of an amplifi er. Special attention has been paid to the analogue audio performance, which will account for a lot of those components. On the digital front there are two 32-bit 8-channel Sabre Reference ES9018 DACs by ESS, there are balanced XLR outputs for the stereo purist, 7.1-channel analogue outputs, and three USB inputs (one front, two back) plus HDMI in, as well as the LAN connection.

This leads us to the important distinction made about this player, apart from the obvious one of high quality audio

and video. It is also able to act as a pre-amp (if required) to a multi-channel power amp, and switch between inputs.

Superior video no doubt owes much to the Qdeo technology in the Marvell Kyoto-G2H chip set, which delivers fantastic picture quality in 2D or 3D, plus upscaling to 4k resolution.

It’s a universal player, which means it can play all the major disc formats plus a few lesser ones – see the list opposite in BDP-103 section. But it’s also a streaming device, so can bring program material in via its network connections (wired or wireless) too. Conversion between PAL and NTSC is in-built, as are image adjustments via stretch modes which enable best reproduction of widescreen and anamorphic images.

With high-quality build standard, performance second to none and so much functionality in one piece, the combination makes the BDP-105 an easy best-buy recommendation whether you put more store by video or audio entertainment. It simply does it all to an

Oppo BDP-103 For those who just cannot reach the BDP-105, they have a cheaper alternative, the BDP-103 ($699), which came out a few months ago. While it hasn’t the same higher quality ingredients, it does share a lot of features. New to this model over previous ones are exciting things such as 4k video up-scaling, 2D to 3D conversion, dual HDMI inputs and MHL compatibility. A new dual-core System-on-Chip

processor delivers quick start-up and fast disc-loading speed. With improved network streaming applications and an enriched media playback interface, the BDP-103 is a versatile player that delivers quality picture and premium sound. For its price the BDP-103 is also a best-buy recommendation.

There was a time when Linn were known principally for their highly regarded Sondek LP12 turntables, and Naim for their

amplifi ers. Both were then dyed-in-the-wool analogue companies, and were complementary to each other in the higher quality stereo hi-fi world of the 1970s to 1990s.

The advent of CD meant change eventually had to happen, and both recognised early the need for data coming off the CD reader to be re-clocked and presented in a low-jitter form to the DAC. Naim’s fi rst CD player, the CDS, was released in 1990, and it later went on to make its statement player, the CD555, priced at 15,000 pounds sterling. Linn’s Karik transport was introduced in 1992, and for best results needed to be coupled to the Numerik DAC. Digital had arrived in the analogue heartland.

The pursuit of higher-quality digital stereo audio didn’t stop – in fact it has continued on to higher planes than we

could have envisaged in the 1990s, when arguments still raged at length regarding the inherent superiority or inferiority of analogue vs. digital. SACD, with its immensely increased sampling rates via the DSD recording process, should have put paid to that argument long ago, but it did not become a mass-market medium. Instead, MP3 took over the mass market in the new century, facilitating in short order the easy access to lots of music, but also launching a whole new wave of less than optimal music quality. As Krusty would say “it’s not just good, it’s good enough”.

For a while, it was good enough for a lot of people. But it was inevitable that they would eventually rediscover the importance of higher quality in both source code and equipment, and the trend towards streaming, storing and reproducing high-defi nition audio fi les hasn’t caught either Linn or Naim napping.

Naim have continued to develop on all fronts, with DACs, amplifi ers, streamers, hard drive storage and CD players. Naim’s product line now includes some very attractive all-in-one audio with amplifi cation, high-resolution music streaming (up to 32-bit 192kHz), CD playback, internet radio and iPod/iPhone/MP3 playback – distilled into one standard-sized component. Just add speakers! These are the Uniti series; more about these below. As you’ll see, Naim’s prices are really very good for what are

undoubtedly premium products. We’re planning a night in the store (see above right) to showcase some of the fabulous Naim products. Here’s an overview of the sorts of products we’ll be stocking, using Naim’s descriptions.

ALL-IN-ONE SYSTEMSThe UnitiQute ($2000). The UnitiQute (pictured below left) includes a pre-amplifi er with two analogue inputs, fi ve 32-bit/192kHz-capable digital inputs and all the traditional Naim musical clarity and transparency. Next, UnitiQute includes a muscular power amplifi er that provides all the rhythmic punch and defi nition you would expect from Naim.

You want conventional radio? Well, UnitiQute includes FM and is due to have DAB+ added soon, to get the best possible performance from either format.

UnitiQute is happy also to play music from an iPod or MP3 player via its front panel-mounted USB socket. The USB audio connection is digital so iPod sound quality is optimised, and Apple authenticated too, so compatibility is seamless. And the same USB socket can be used to play music fi les in almost any format at up to 32-bit/192kHz resolution straight from a memory stick.

And it doesn’t end there. A network Ethernet socket and integrated Wi-Fi means that UnitiQute can easily tap into Internet radio or UPnP servers (a Naim HDX for example) to drop almost

unlimited music choices into your lap. This model doesn’t include a CD player, while the Uniti 2 (see below) does.

The Naim SuperUniti ($5500). There’s a convention in high-end audio that says only separates can reach genuine high-end performance. Not any more. The Naim Uniti showed just how much audio performance and versatility could be housed within one stylish casing. Now the SuperUniti (top image above) takes the concept still further. ‘All-in-one’ means not just an integrated amplifi er and a couple of integrated sources. SuperUniti genuinely can do it all. It’s an integrated wireless UPnP network stream player, USB audio player, iPod and iPhone dock, internet radio, DAB radio, FM radio, 10-input digital and analogue preamplifi er, digital-to-analogue converter, and stereo 80 watt power amplifi er. And just so that you don’t lose track of time while listening – easily done – it has an alarm clock too.

The Naim Uniti 2 ($4700). This model (second image above) has all the functionality of its big brother, and more. It includes high-resolution music streaming (up to 32-bit/192kHz), CD playback, internet radio and iPod/iPhone/MP3 playback, all in an elegant, sleek enclosure with network connection via Ethernet or Wi-Fi. All you need add is a pair of speakers to create an accessible all-in-one system that can put music at the centre of your life.

STREAMERSThe Naim ND5 XS ($3300). With an ND5 XS (below) you can stream audio from a UPnP server, discover internet radio, connect your iPod, iPhone, iPad or USB storage, and even listen to conventional digital audio sources. Simply connect the ND5 XS to your home network, plug it into a spare amplifi er input, and the new world of streamed audio is yours.

Streamed audio is a Hi-Fi revolution and the ND5 XS unlocks its potential. It provides easy access to all the audio delivery formats that have suddenly made music in the home exciting once again. Through its wired or wireless network connection the ND5 XS can play literally thousands of internet radio stations. The ND5 XS is also fully ‘Apple Authenticated’ meaning it can play iPad, iPod or iPhone-stored music, digitally for optimised sound quality, via its front-panel USB socket. And via the same socket, the ND5 XS can play audio fi les stored on USB memory sticks. The ND5 XS can play audio fi les, including iTunes libraries, stored on a computer or on network storage over UPnP. It can play the full range of audio fi le and stream

formats at up to 32-bit/192kHz resolution: WAV, FLAC, Apple Lossless, AIFF, WMA, MP3, M4A, MMS, AAC, AIFF and Ogg Vorbis. The ND5 XS will also handle M3U and PLS playlists formats and it supports gapless playback. Finally, an optional FM/DAB+ tuner module which integrates seamlessly with the ND5 XS control interface, means that traditional radio is also not forgotten.

For more conventional external audio sources, the ND5 XS provides three independently selectable digital inputs to enable S/PDIF audio from CD players, computers and other digital audio sources at up to 32-bit/192kHz resolution to be played. iTunes libraries, stored on a computer or on network storage, via UPnP. It can play all common (and some not so common) audio fi le and stream formats at up to 32-bit/192kHz resolution: WMA, MP3, MMS, AAC, Apple Lossless, WAV, FLAC, AIFF and Ogg Vorbis. NDX also recognises M3U and PLS playlist formats and supports gapless playback on all lossless formats.

NDX can play literally thousands of internet radio stations, while an optional FM/DAB+ tuner module is again available, integrating seamlessly with the NDX control interface. NDX can play iPod or iPhone music via its front panel USB socket and, via the same socket, it can play audio fi les stored on USB memory sticks and drives. NDX is fully Apple Authenticated, enabling playback of iPod/iPhone-stored digital media, bypassing the iPod/iPhone internal DAC for optimised performance.

Three independently selectable digital inputs enable S/PDIF audio signals from CD players, computers and other digital audio sources at up to 32-bit/192kHz resolution, to be handled by the NDX. Each digital input comprises a different connection socket option: optical TosLink, coaxial phono and coaxial BNC, to provide versatility and optimised sound quality.

Versatility and audio quality is worth nothing without an intuitive user interface, of course, and the NDX has three. It can be operated from its front panel buttons, from its remote control handset or using the Naim n-Stream app for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch. The app also allows input and volume control of Naim preamplifi ers and DAC. In each case, NDX control is simple, intuitive and satisfying.

Naim DAC ($3550). The Naim DAC (above) uses state-of-the-art circuitry similar to that in their top CD player, but this is no ordinary DAC in structure. It has 10 inputs, so you can use its superior conversion quality for a whole stack of other components. It has eight S/PDIF inputs, two USB inputs, and is capable of handling audio data sampled at up to 768kHz and with up to 24-bit resolution. It not only brings all the digital inputs together into the analogue domain, but does so with performance that can compete with any Naim CD player.

It overcomes the jitter issues of S/PDIF by reading the data into a ‘rotating’ data RAM buffer independently of its timing signal and reading it out again clocked by one of ten extremely low noise, fi xed frequency crystal sine-wave oscillators.

Along with being a source of jitter, S/PDIF is a potential source of RF noise. The Naim DAC suppresses S/PDIF noise through electrical isolation of its DSP front end from the digital to analogue converter and analogue circuits. Each element is also run from separate power supplies.

The Naim DAC’s digital fi ltering is handled by a powerful SHARC DSP chip running unique Naim-authored code to create an ultra high precision 40-bit fl oating point fi lter. The fi lter oversamples by 16 times on 44.1kHz data and provides stop-band attenuation of 180dB on all data. Following the digital fi lter are the two mono Burr-Brown DAC chips, as used in the CD555 CD player. Finally the Naim DAC features a very high performance, low noise, and low distortion fully discrete analogue output stage.

Naim Unitiserve ($3600). UnitiServe is a compact, slot-loading, CD ripping hard-disk music player and server, based on the technology of the multi-award-winning Naim HDX. It takes the fundamentals of the HDX – a massive 2TB internal hard-disk drive, Naim bit-perfect ripping, Ethernet connection, UPnP server, StreamNet technology and local digital outputs – and combines them with a set of features perfectly suited to music in the home of today, and tomorrow.

An audio system can grow around UnitiServe. It can replay ripped CDs into a digital input-equipped amplifi er, or a DAC. In addition the UnitiServe can operate as a UPnP server to stream audio over a home network to any UPnP playback device (such as NaimUniti or UnitiQute), to create a simple and fantastic-sounding multi-room system. And for those wanting to put sound quality at the centre of whole-home control, UnitiServe is StreamNet-enabled and can also function as the heart of a sophisticated IP-based NaimNet multi-room system. However you choose to use UnitiServe, it can be controlled by aniPhone or iPod touch device, or a computer anywhere on the home network.

UnitiServe is not just limited to CD format audio or its internal storage. It can also play audio from a USB stick and will scan the network for music stored on NAS drives or network shares. A variant of the UnitiServe – the UnitiServe-SSD – is also available. The UnitiServe-SSD has no internal hard-disk storage and is intended for use in network systems where ripped data is stored exclusively on NAS drives. The UnitiServe also gives you the option to automatically create duplicate versions of your ripped music and save them to an allocated storage device. This makes the necessary process of backing up your music simple and pain-free.

“… it is not a ‘soundbar’”. Well I beg to differ – the 4TV 2112 is a ‘soundbar’, and a bloody good one at that. Soundbars are big business this year – I guess everyone is over asking ‘what did he/she say?’ while watching TV. Every company appears to have one in their range, or is about to

IS IT A SOUNDBAR?release one. Along the way we have heard some very poor attempts, with many companies obviously putting very little research into what makes a soundbar really work.

This is clearly not the case with the 2112. This product has been designed from the ground up to fulfi l a specifi c purpose, and that is to improve the sound of the TV set it is connected to. A few sensible additions along the way are a welcome bonus.

Firstly it is designed so that a TV can comfortably sit on top, and it even swivels if you need to change the viewing

angle. Its sleek design (51mm high) also means that if your screen is

wall mounted it will discreetly sit on a shelf below. When not

being used as a sound bar music can be streamed from any Bluetooth enabled device. It has a

USB connection for Apple products, and has a dedicated AirPort Express input. However, the biggest attribute of the 2112 is its performance. No soundbar will ever replace a well-designed 5.1 surround system, but they can come a very close second (as Yamaha has managed to prove time and time again).

What I found particularly impressive with this unit is its ability to reproduce diction. This would be the singularly most annoying feature of today’s slim fl at-screen TVs – the inability to clearly hear what the people on screen are saying. Time and time again we listen to soundbars hell-bent on producing a big, high-impact soundstage but which fail to provide clearly articulated dialogue. The 2112 will produce a very big sound if that is what you are after – but if you want to hear what the actors are saying, it does not get much better than this.

The 2112 sells for $1,999.

The upswing in interest in high quality digital music is becoming more evident every month now. NAD’s superb M2 Direct Digital

Integrated Amplifi er and the smaller C390DD have made their mark, and the highly regarded M51 DAC (a raging success) came along just before the other components, the M50 and M52, which now all go together to make up the Masters Digital Music Suite. It would be ideal to use these with the M2 amplifi er, but that’s not essential. Using them with a very good amplifi er and speakers is, however. They would be wasted on anything that’s merely average to good.

The NAD M50 ($2499) is the brain of the Masters Digital Music Suite, where most of the processing and control functions are located. The M50 is a ‘software defi ned’ product, meaning that much of the functionality of the system is defi ned by software not hardware. This

NAD’S MASTERSmeans that new cloud services or audio codecs can be integrated at a future date by simply changing the software stack of the M50. This software upgrade potential means that there is a software ‘roadmap’ that allows the M50 to live on and maintain its cutting-edge functionality. While the focus is clearly on 24/96 Studio Master downloads and listening, the roadmap includes Internet Radio and premium cloud services. Owners will be notifi ed when these additional capabilities are available and given the option to add them into the M50.

The hardware includes the latest generation of low-power super high performance ARM processors. These have more computing power than a PC from just a few years ago, yet run cool and do not require noisy fans. Many different digital formats are supported in hardware including SPDIF, USB and, unusually for a stereo audio component, HDMI. NAD

included HDMI because it is a secure encrypted format which supports 24/192 HD Audio in PCM’s native I2S format — this is not included as a video output.

There’s a choice of wired or wireless network connection, and these use standard wireless protocol IEEE 802.11 b/g/n. While it is possible to stream 24/96 music wirelessly, we recommend a wired connection or local storage for HD music to avoid the possibility of dropouts. The Wi-Fi capability does offer the option of control from a smartphone or tablet with Wi-Fi, which is a fantastic way to enjoy your music collection. When combined with the M52 Digital Music Vault, the M50 becomes the ideal way to enjoy HD music as well as everything else in your collection including CDs, MP3s and AAC compressed music.

The M50 CD transport can playback or rip (copy) to the M52 Digital Music Vault, and ripping is completely automatic. NAD’s management software is available as a free download from the Apple app store for Apple iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch. With a network connection to the internet, this music management software fetches metadata and cover art without the need for a computer. Everything is organised and available for playback. You can browse your music collection using album art or category listings and easily create playlists on the fl y.

Of course a tablet is not required to operate the M50, as there is an IR remote and 4-line graphic VFD display that operates like a conventional hi-fi component. The RS-232 and IR input allow integration with home automation systems as well. But the tablet or smartphone interface is addictive in its simplicity and ease of use. You can create and store playlists, and discover and play music from any device on the network. With your entire library at your fi ngertips, music listening becomes more engaging and more enjoyable.

Finally, there is a safe and convenient way to store your music fi les! Anyone with a computer knows that hard-disk drives can fail without warning, often destroying all the precious data stored. If you have spent many hours creating your music collection from CDs and downloads, the prospect of losing all that hard work and value, plus actually starting all over again, is simply unthinkable.

As part of the Masters Digital Music Suite, the M52 Digital Music Vault ($2499) provides enterprise-level protection for your valuable 24/96 music collection. Using Redundant Array of Independent Discs (RAID 5) technology, the M52’s three hard-disk drives (HDD) make it nearly impossible to damage your music. Front-panel LED indicators display the status of the HDDs, and alert you if there is an HDD failure. Even if a disk drive fails, you won’t lose data in this self-healing system. Simply replace the drive, and the system automatically reconfi gures itself.

The NAD M51 DAC ($1499) draws on the same Direct Digital Feedback technology used in the M2 amplifi er to bring you the benefi ts of its super-fast processing (108MHz) and sampling rate of 844kHz. It converts incoming PCM data to PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) and in that process reduces jitter to negligible amounts. The accuracy and lack of noise and distortion is achieved through all controls being in the digital domain.

Operating in a differential mode with double precision, the M51 has state-of-the-art specifi cations for low noise and freedom from distortion. The extreme headroom afforded by the 35-bit architecture allows for a DSP-based volume control that does not reduce resolution. Even with 24-bit high defi nition signals, the output can be attenuated by 66dB (very, very quiet) before bit

truncation begins. The incredible precision of the M51’s processing engine gives music a vibrancy and transient accuracy that must be heard to be appreciated. The conversion process from PCM to PWM completely eliminates any jitter present on the incoming signal – again offering state-of-the-art performance in this most important parameter.

Due to the very high clock speed and mathematical precision of the reconstruction fi lters, the resulting audio signal is totally free of digital artifacts like ringing. A pure Class-A analogue stage with very low output impedance provides the perfect interface to your favourite amplifi er. Also, both balanced and single-ended outputs are available. Having six inputs, the M51 operates as a de-facto digital pre-amp, including volume control which is also in the digital domain. This is

Converting an 1898 School Hall into a truly stunning home became a one-of-a-kind project. Apart from the challenges for

the architect, an inventive approach was required to integrated the Audio, Video and Control systems for the entire home, and also to create the unique concept for

“OLD SCHOOL” REVOLUTIONISEDthe design of the Media Room, which is a very open, glass-walled area.

The clients wanted a space which they could use as a Sunroom/Reading room during the day, and for enjoying a movie experience in the evenings. This Media Room is the main TV area in the home, as well as being the Sunroom, and needed

to deliver a fantastic entertainment experience as well as providing the simpler conveniences of watching TV and listening to music.

The centrepiece of the solution is the very prominent Panasonic 85” plasma display which fl oats effortlessly on a soft fabric-lined island wall, which also hides

the curtains for the whole room. This island wall houses the front left, right and centre speakers, and a 12” subwoofer. Beneath the screens are four pull-out racks which house all the AV and Control equipment for the home.

As the room consists of three glass walls, a pair of motorised plush curtains move into place when activated by the

Crestron Controller. When not in use these curtains are fully hidden behind the front wall so that the room can enjoy the natural light. When deployed, the curtains also help with the acoustics and lighting control, creating a theatre-like space whenever required.

The amplifi cation is from a Marantz AV7005 pre-amp and a Marantz MM8003




amplifi er. These drive the fi ve B&W fl ush-mount surround speakers, while the subwoofer is a 12” Velodyne that adds warmth to the room acoustics. The client has a wide selection of viewing material to choose from, such as a video library of Blu-rays and DVDs stored on their Kaleidescape movie server, streamed content via an Apple TV, plus FoxTel and free-to-air television.

But the client’s needs went beyond video, and so the room doubles as a listening room, where the client can sit and enjoy listening to music from a range of sources. These include a Crestron iPod dock, Kaleidescape music server, DAB+, FM and AM radio, and – to support the client’s desire to still be able to play their legacy CDs – a fi ve-disc CD player. Control of the room is via a Crestron MTX3 hand-held controller and a six-button wall switch at the entry to the room. The programming interface on the Crestron remote had to be clear and self explanatory for the client, to ensure they

would be comfortable with the use of the system and therefore get the most from it.

The design called for the front wall to contain all the AV and Control equipment for the theatre plus the whole house. This challenge was met by using four 14RU Middle Atlantic pull-out racks below the screen (see right). The front speakers were all mounted in the wall behind acoustically transparent material, with the centre speaker mounted above the screen but angled down towards the viewing area. The subwoofer was also enclosed in the front wall, which allowed the rest of the room to be kept clear of equipment and provide a minimalist feel. No acoustic panelling was used in the room but the material front wall (and the heavy plush curtains lining the room when in movie mode) deadens the glass walls and allows the B&W speakers to perform at their best.

There are a number of separate zones for audio within the home, which feature carefully placed speakers in order not to

detract from architectural aspects such as the superb beams under the upper roof line. On that upper level an offi ce has distributed audio and video, and features a ‘Mirror Image’ in-wall video screen. It is one of three distributed video zones and has access to programs via Kaleidescape, Foxtel and Apple TV. It also has a special glass wall which at the fl ick of a switch becomes opaque. Control is via Crestron, with a mix of in-wall touch-screens and portable ones.

The Sewing Room/Work Room has a 42” Panasonic plasma fed by Kaleidescape, Foxtel and Apple TV, plus audio powered by a Yamaha surround receiver and the usual Crestron controls.

Security for the home features cameras which can be accessed from the control screens, and keyless entry via biometric (fi ngerprint) pads. Len Wallis Audio handled all the computer networking aspects, as well as the control and security systems. This unique conversion of an 1898 School hall into a truly stunning

home is a one-of-a-kind project, and we have been able to balance technology with the traditional feel of the home. Wiring needs to be done carefully in these older buildings, running a thin line between concealment and damaging age-old structures. But the fi nished result is a fully modern home in terms of electronic features, offering all mod cons, but clothed in an antique ambience, and topped off with an amazing new room that functions perfectly as both a glass-lined sunroom/living space and a modern media space that would rival many small home theatres.

The compact powered speaker system has proven to be a popular format for secondary or smaller areas (although the A7 or

the Zeppelin can even fi ll a larger room). They usually have a dock, but less so these days, as wireless connections become more common, also making the system accessible to more brands of player.

The new B&W A7 ($999) is an alternative to the Zeppelin Air, having no dock as such but being easily connected to your music wirelessly. It does have several physical connections as well, so you can connect to the auxiliary input with a 3.5mm stereo or an optical digital lead. Then there’s a USB socket, plus an Ethernet connection for wired access to your local network instead of relying solely on the wireless AirPlay method.

B&W have made the setting up easier by a new app – called B&W Setup! This

walks you through the process, which on the Zeppelin Air was not quite as easy.

B&W A7 AND A5band, reminiscent of the little MM-1 powered speaker styling, becomes the power on/off at the left side, while at the right side there’s volume up/down. A small remote control is also supplied.

Inside the box there are fi ve speaker drivers, two tapered-tube tweeters, two mid-bass and one large sub-bass. The enclosure is vented at the rear (above all the connection sockets) and the amplifi cation totals 150w of Class-D power. Sonically this speaker punches out a more solid sound than its older brother the Zeppelin. It is also more spacious sounding, having a wide soundstage, although this will be room sensitive. It doesn’t have the particularly sculpted looks of the Zeppelin, as it’s intended to blend into the background, being less of a design statement in itself. Multiple units can be deployed to give you multi-room capability, with each unit having a name like “living room” or “bedroom”. Your portable iOS device (must be version 4.3.3 or later) can send to only one A7 at a time, but your computer can send to all at once, for party mode or just for continuous music while moving around the home.

The B&W A5 ($599) is essentially a scaled-down version of the A7, having

the same facilities for the most part but using smaller and slightly lower powered speakers. The same advanced B&W technologies help achieve amazing sound from a small package with maximum ease of use. The AirPlay system enables wireless transmission from any Apple device suitably equipped, such as iPhone, iPod touch, iPad or Apple computers.

The drivers used include the tapered-tube tweeters fi rst developed for the Nautilus series of top-end loudspeakers, which continued down to the recent 600 series and on to the Zeppelin-powered iPod docks. Despite its smaller size, it still kicks, particularly when taking advantage of room boundaries for bass reinforcement. Class-D amplifi cation is used for each of the two tweeters and two mid-bass drivers (4”/100mm), a total of 80w (4 x 20w channels) of amplifi cation. Flowport, as developed for larger speakers, is used to get the most effi cient bass refl ex performance.

As DigitalTrends.com said: “…we’ve never before heard this kind of jaw-droppingly big, yet impeccably clean bass performance from such a small speaker. The A5 seemed more than happy to kick out the decibel-heavy jams, and only when we pushed the A5’s volume near its limits did we experience any noticeable compression or distortion.”

Additional inputs are present in the form of an Ethernet socket and a 3.5mm auxiliary (analogue stereo) connection.

Soundbars have been called other things, such as Digital Sound Projectors or Front Surround Systems, but the term ‘soundbar’

has stuck, being short and to the point. What it doesn’t convey, however, is just how clever these things have become. Far from being a blunt instrument, they are capable of delivering a whole lot of subtle variations, and fooling us into thinking we’re hearing surround sound even though we have just the front speakers.

Yamaha’s latest models are economical, compact, and very capable. The YSP-4300 ($1999, above left) uses a 22 x 2w array of speakers controlled by Yamaha’s YSP technology to produce sharp beams for extremely high quality surround sound. Two powerful 75w 6.5cm woofer units in the large cabinet also help to create a sound fi eld fi lled with presence for a superior surround sound feeling and outstanding imaging. Note: The very similar YSP-3300 ($1699) uses 16 x 2w drivers plus two 50w woofers. Both models have a 130w wireless subwoofer with a large 16cm driver and Yamaha’s exclusive Advanced YST technology to produce clear, powerful bass. The Linear Port improves sound dispersion and is designed to minimise unnecessary noise. Both music and movie sound effects are reproduced with an astounding sense of presence after an automatic set-up process which analyses the room response and boundaries.

The YSP-4300 achieves surround sound effects by producing beams of sound and using advanced processing to control their directions, utilising available walls and other surfaces to refl ect them. You hear surround sound with natural ambience and optimum imaging. Yamaha technology also provides the additional benefi ts of a wide ‘sweet-spot’ listening area while eliminatiing listening fatigue.

Surround sound effects are achieved by directing sound beams off the walls to reach the listener from various angles. IntelliBeam automatically sets the best beam angles, while optimising the level and frequency response of each beam. This makes initial setup both extremely simple and acoustically perfect.

The unit decodes HD audio signals to ensure you hear the best possible sound from Blu-ray players and other digital sources. Yamaha’s ultra-sophisticated CINEMA DSP technology creates thrillingly realistic soundscapes in any room. You can select 10 different programs, including three Movie, three Music and four Entertainment programs.

Four HDMI inputs mean you can connect four high quality digital sources; there is 4K pass-through, which allows the transmission of next generation super high resolution images, and also 3D, for the transmission of 3D video. With

MP3-encoded music, frequency response suffers, so the in-built dynamic range expander restores what was lost.

The YIT-W12TX Wireless Transmitter, supplied with the YSP-4300, lets you enjoy music wirelessly from your iPod/iPhone/iPad or Mac/PC. Yamaha-developed AirWired technology provides uncompressed linear PCM transmission for consistently clear, accurate sound output.

Yamaha also has two heavier-duty models, the YSP-4100 ($2499) and YSP-5100 ($2999, pictured below), which have a taller profi le and a wired subwoofer. The two sizes equate roughly with the size of either a 42”/106cm TV or a 50”/127cm, with the larger one also having a bit more dynamic ability.

In conclusion, soundbars may not be the right solution for everyone, but they certainly represent a way to get vastly improved sound with a minimum of space and equipment required. Their effectiveness will partly depend on the room and the availability of surface to bounce sound off. Yamaha have other models of varying size and price – both larger (and smaller) ones than those covered here, so there’s probably something to suit, whatever scale of gear you need.

However, we also recommend the new Panorama2 model from B&W, which sells for $2499 without subwoofer. The Panorama’s sound quality is excellent, as is the curvaceous design.

Headphones are being produced to suit the modern on-the-go lifestyle, and there’s a move to make them as good as

possible, rather than just lightweight and convenient. Sennheiser have joined companies like Focal and B&W in

producing what is almost a hybrid design, a fairly

full-sized headphone that’s happy to be used in portable modes. The fi nish is also important – these have to serve as a classy accessory.

Leather never goes out of style: it’s both durable and comfortable in addition to looking fabulous. The Momentum headphones ($449) offer

the famous Sennheiser sound

with some signifi cant

differences. It is refl ected in the material selection of these refi ned headphones – the use of supple, breathable leather for the headband and the “cans” themselves, displaying a commitment to style. Then, the effi ciency of 110dB and impedance of 18 ohms allows their use with a variety of equipment, down to portable devices.

These are a ‘closed’ design, which offers isolation from outside noise (a degree of ‘noise reduction’ without the need for batteries or extra circuitry) as well as letting less noise escape into the room to annoy other people! Refl ecting its technical excellence is the use of high-performance neodymium magnets for extraordinarily rich and detailed stereo sound. Also, the circumaural (large) capsules contribute to comfort plus listening enjoyment.

For excellent connectivity, the headphones are fi tted with a 3.5mm stereo jack (plus adaptor for 6.5mm) and this, along with the nominal impedance, makes for wide compatibility with mobile players. An additional cable with an integrated smart remote and microphone is included for easy management of tracks and calls when using the Momentum with phones or iPods.

While we hesitate to call them High Fidelity, there’s a place for very small stereo systems – and

it’s a fact of life that small systems make up the bulk of national sales. They come in handy for secondary locations where their combination of features makes them attractive. Small size, a multitude of sources, good sound, and a price that makes them amazing value – all of which is contingent on them being properly engineered.

Yamaha’s MCR-040 came out a few years ago and was immediately successful

YAMAHA MICRO SYSTEMSbecause it ticked all these boxes, and came in a range of decorator colours as well. Now Yamaha has the next generation of this little stereo, and there are two versions to choose from.

The MCR-042 (pictured above in its many colours) closely resembles the MCR-040, having CD, USB, Dock and Radio (FM/DAB+). Dimensions are slightly reduced depth-wise, and cabinet structure is strengthened. A new App gives control from your Apple device, particularly useful for setting the Intelligent Alarm system (it starts on gentle music before getting

to the beep) if used as a bedroom system. It will be updated for additional functionality over time. The price of $449 is also slightly lower than the MCR-040.

The other new version is the MCR-B142, only $50 extra at $499, but with the added facility of Bluetooth and an Aux-in, another avenue for source material to be brought in. It looks the same as the others, but adding the wireless capability while retaining the legacy Apple dock means that a lot of devices can be used, up to and including iPhone 5, with a minimum of fuss.

To begin with, it’s a universal player, so it can handle Blu-ray, DVD, DVD-A, CD and SACD. It has wireless capability for connection to your local network, USB inputs front and back, and it is capable of playing FLAC fi les, MP3, AAC, WAV, DivX, MPEG, JPEG and various others. It has a 192kHz/32-bit digital-to-analogue converter for the analogue audio outputs, and there are free apps available to control it from Apple or Android devices.

To give you a more complete picture, here’s the feature list...

The MCR-332 ($699, pictured below right) steps up to the Yamaha “Piano Finish”, with speakers in gloss enamel and a brushed metal Tuner/Amplifi er/Disc Player with dock and USB, FM and DAB+. Although larger than the “40” series, this is still a very compact stereo, and represents an easy step up to the next level. Carefully constructed two-way speakers and a digital amplifi er give excellent sound for this class, while a variety of sources can be brought in, including via an analogue Aux, 3.5mm stereo. A subwoofer out is also present on the back panel.

The MCR-840 ($1299, opposite left) goes to a more substantial level, having a separate tuner/amplifi er and disc player (DVD/CD) with HDMI out. There’s a Dock, USB input, FM/DAB+ radio, and two additional inputs for attaching alternative sources. The 65w x 2 amplifi er and a pair of bookshelf two-way speakers gives this system a sound that can fi ll a larger room very well, with impressive bass and clean midrange and treble detail.

QEDQED have been around since

1973, and have forged a place for themselves in supplying high quality

accessories at prices which have been heading downwards over time, much to the pleasure of everyone who wants to use properly made cables without having to pay the very high prices of some other specialist brands. They’re celebrating their 40th anniversary with some great new products.

Ruby Anniversary ($15/m) will be a highlight, a completely new design from QED’s laboratories, celebrating 40 years at the forefront of UK speaker cable design. It utilises the technologies of both Genesis and X-Tube cables and combines them in a new miniature format, bringing ‘high end’ cable philosophies to the entry-level hi-fi market.

Every inch of cable between an amplifi er and speakers adversely affects sonic performance, because amplifi ers cannot compensate for the added impedance of the speaker cable. This

compromises fi delity due to the non-linear effect the cable has on the frequency response of the loudspeakers.

Most manufacturers minimise this problem by designing cables with a large cross-sectional area, because it’s an easy way of reducing the speaker cable’s resistance. Unfortunately, at high frequencies, a phenomenon called ‘skin effect’ means currents fl ow towards the outside of each conductor, actually reducing its effective cross-sectional area and causing cable impedance to rise by as much as 50% within the audible frequency band (see the blue line in the graph). Obviously, the resulting attenuation of high frequencies compromises fi delity. This is further compounded by the complex variations in speaker impedance around the speaker’s resonant frequencies.

The new Ruby Anniversary speaker cable’s advanced design largely overcomes this perennial problem by incorporating unique Aircore technology – which QED fi rst introduced in the award-winning Genesis cable.

The red line on the graph above indicates how this scientifi cally calculated geometry reduces the skin effect on cables of similar cross-sectional area, while hardly affecting resistance within the audio band (up to 22kHz), which only starts to rise well beyond the range of human hearing.

To complement the new Ruby cable – or for use with any good speaker cable – QED have a new edition of their Airloc Metal 4mm banana plugs at $25 per pair. These are not just beautifully made, but when properly crimped provide extensive contact area between conductor and plug.

A new and exceptionally good budget line of plugs and spades, the Screwloc series, offers two pairs of the plugs or spades for just $49. Again, these can be recommended for use with any of the lower range of QED cables (namely those priced below the Ruby Anniversary!) or other brands. But from the Ruby upwards, Airloc is the way to go.

The popular minijack-to-two-RCA plugs gets a new contender in the form of the “Performance Audio Graphite” version at $59 for a 1.5m and $99 for the 3m. The higher level interconnect user is catered for with new stereo audio leads as follows: Reference Audio Evolution (1m for $249/pair), Signature Audio S (1m for $499/pair). But the big news is the new Reference XLR series, which comes in three lengths: 1m at $299/pair, 1.5m at $349/pair, and 2m at $399/pair. These have balanced twisted pair construction, dual magnetic screen and OFC braid, plus gold-plated pins in a precision body/grip.

MEASURE IT!Project MeasureIt2 ($129). The performance of pickup cartridges depends on them being correctly set up. Apart from alignment, the other critical

measures are Tracking Weight and Anti-skate settings. Recommended tracking weights for cartridges vary from as little as 1.25g through to 2g or more, and with such small variations a precision measuring device is needed to do it accurately. SPIN-CLEANThere has been nothing in between the cheap cleaning pads of various sorts and the top-line cleaning machines (which can be up around $1000) – until now! The Spin-Clean Record Washer Mk2 ($135) is now available and has received acclaim from audiophile magazines like The Absolute Sound and Stereophile, among others.

It is essentially a narrow tank to contain clean water and a small quantity of special cleaning fl uid. Two rollers support the 12” LP (with alternate positions for other sizes) and two brushes in the middle clean while you rotate the record three times clockwise and three times more, anti-clockwise.

The Spin-Clean fl uid is applied directly onto the brushes, and as the record rotates the brushes get the dirt and other matter out of the grooves and it goes into the water then, due to the chemical action of the cleaning fl uid, sinks to the bottom of the tank. This means fi rstly that it doesn’t re-attach to the LP, and secondly that you can use the same mixture for more LPs. Each batch of water/fl uid additive is said to be good for up to 50 LPs. Your initial batch will be enough for 700 cleans! The fl uid contains no alkalines, soap solutions or phosphates, and is bio-degradeable.

SPECIAL AUDIO TEST DISCSThe Chesky company are famous for their audiophile recording quality, and they are also one of the few who have produced discs that show you what the characteristics of your system are.

These discs will give you the tracks specially selected to demonstrate stage depth, imaging, midrange purity, dynamics, bass

depth and a host of other things. “The Ultimate Demonstration Disc” (Chesky UD95) on CD gets you started on the “road to critical listening”. For those with SACD players there’s also Chesky SACD343 (hybrid disc, playable on CD players too) which is Volume 2 of The Ultimate Demonstration Disc. These special editions sell for $39.95 each.

VIBRAPODSVibrapods have been designed with a cunning approach to soaking up the internal vibes that all sorts of players generate with their motors and transport mechanisms, as well as those coming up through the furniture from other things. The Vibrapods ($39.95 per set of 4, plus $5 postage to anywhere in Australia) are replacement feet for your various

components which can be attached (after removing the original, screwed-on feet) or on which they can simply sit. There are fi ve models to accommodate items of various weight: Model 1 (0.9-1.3kg), Model 2 (1.8-3.6kg), Model 3 (3.6-5.46kg), Model 4 (6.35-8.16kg), Model 5 (9.9-12.7kg).

As an alternative to the Vibrapod feet, or even for use in concert with them, there are the Vibrapod Cones which suit heavier items such as amplifi ers and speakers, being weight tolerant up to 25kg. Some reviewers have pointed out that the improvements differ from Vibrapod foot to cone, and that in some cases you might want to use both, stacked. Again, given the low price of $11.90 each, no problem.
