Peddinghaus Receives Hypertherm AwardMr. Jim Colt, Application Technology Managerfor Hypertherm Corporation, Hanover, NH,presented Peddinghaus Corporation an outstanding sales award for plasma products.

This marks the 6th consecutive year thatPeddinghaus has received this award of distinc-tion for the sales of Hypertherm PlasmaSystems. These units – especially the HPR 260– are employed on Peddinghaus CNC plate pro-cessing systems such as the HSFDB 2500, FDB 2500, and FPB 1800.

Think Outside the Box for Welding & Fab Work How should a structural or heavy plate fabrica-tor react when that one good job is finished up,and there are no major projects on the horizon? That is a good time to think outside of the steelconstruction box – think about industries thatare similar, and that are thriving.

Look at manufacturing – many agriculturalmanufacturing firms can’t hire enough quality orcertified welders to meet their productiondemands. What are these firms doing? They areseeking outside vendors to help meet theirdemand for fabricated weldments.

It’s happening in the Midwest USA, and isspreading to other parts of the world. If you area structural fabricator, look to your welding staffas a source of revenue… You may be surprised!Be flexible and diversify! Watch for details in theSeptember Peddi-TV release.

Doralp: A History of QualityDoralp is best known for providing the construction industry with the highest quality in fabricated structural steel. From trusses tocolumns to miscellaneous components, Doralphas established a reputation for consistently providing on time deliveries that are perfectlyfabricated with accurate tolerances, and alwaysready for site erection. Mr. Mustafa Doralp andMr. Sedat Yildirim are the principal owners ofDoralp. Both gentlemen are experienced in thesteel construction industry before comingtogether 22 years ago to start the company.

Q & A with Mr. Mustafa Doralp: An Insightful Look at a SuccessfulFabricator…

Q. In what markets does your company participate?

A. We are active in the energy markets; some ofwhich are very strong, especially petro-chemi-cal and power plants. We also participate incommercial and industrial markets. Mining isalso a potential in this region.

Q. Where do you see the future of fabricationheading in the next 3 – 5 years?

A. There is great potential in the region, especially in Turkey. There are many newmanufacturing industries starting in thiscountry, along with new subsidiaries of established international companies. Turkey is also one of the leading steel producers inthe entire world, so it is a logical choice tolocate here.

The city of Istanbul, Turkey, has been an international center of commerce for centuries. Istanbul’s geographic

location: near Eastern Europe, Middle East and Asia, as well as the Mediterranean Sea, Bosporus River, and

the Black Sea provide transportation gateways to many regions. (For history buffs, Istanbul was once known as

Constantinople).

The business advantages are further enhanced when you consider that Istanbul is the only city in the world

where one can contact any other country in the world within their normal 9 am to 5 pm business day.

Istanbul is also the home to one of the premier structural fabricators in this entire region. “Doralp Teknolojik

Montaj Muhendislik Insaat Sanayi ve Ticaret Ltd. Sti.” is the official name of this Turkish company. But to their

customers and industry partners, the firm is known simply as Doralp, and is synonymous with “The Best”.

Mr. Mustafa Doralp (left) and Mr. Sedat Yildirim are the principal owners of the Doralp Teknolojik, the premier structural steel fabricator in Turkey.

Petro-Chemical projects, such as this refinery, are an importantmarket for Doralp.

Doralp engages in many industrial projects – especially for thegrowing manufacturing sector in Turkey and surrounding countries.

Earthquakes and Natural Disasters Affect Business

Q. How did the 1999 earthquake affect Turkey?A. Prior to that time, much of the construction

was concrete. However, the earthquake had adevastating effect on those buildings, andprovided awareness to the advantages of steelframed construction.

Q. How do you impress potential clients to seriously consider constructing steelframed buildings, rather than concrete?

A. Steel buildings are becoming more popular, the designs are sleek and modern, they are

more energy efficient, and are more versatilein design and construction with abilities to beerected quickly.

How do you Market a StructuralFabrication Company?

Q. How do you market your company – Doralp Steel – to potential customers?

A. Easy…Our employees and technology, but letme explain technology in two ways:1. Our design ability using our software:

Tekla, AutoCad, and StruCad2. Our Peddinghaus equipment – computer

accuracy and efficiency

Q. How does the software impress potentialclients?

A. Our customers can view their designs inadvance – with options for their considera-tion. It provides complete flexibility for theproject.

It is broadcast in a lively web based video format that communicates today’s industry information in a fast “news style” for-mat. Our goal is to educate and inform, and to meet this objective, you willhear from every leading participant in our industry. From detailing andMRP software to global industry associations; from structural steel fabrica-tors to steel service centers; from the best shop practices to tips on today’smarket strategies… Peddi-TV® will cover it for you.

Our latest Peddi-TV® installment was recently posted this September – watch for it, as we highlight Hypertherm technology, methods to grow yourbusiness, and a look at industry detailing and production software.

Business 101: Invest in Your Company (Like We Do)You know me; my glass is always half full as I am always optimistic on ourindustry and our future. As I write this in early-September, the economy isagain a major topic as the media is reporting on stock market uncertainty, debt limit issues, and international economic struggles.

I agree with the thoughts of today’s business and industry leaders that now is the time for a conservative business approach and invest in your owncompany. For example, at Peddinghaus, we have invested in a totally newVOIP telephone system that is technologically advanced to provide data thatimproves our customer service support while providing data usage that helpsrun our business better.

Peddinghaus has also invested in a new coordinate measuring machine(CMM) for the Quality Control department in our Machine Shop. Why make this six figure investment? This CNC measuring device providessupremely accurate CNC controlled measurements – thus assuring thatevery machined part built for our Peddinghaus machines are precise, hightolerance and repeatable. We take the term “craftsmanship” very seriously at Peddinghaus.

This conservative approach helps prepare Peddinghaus Corp for the future;while also maintaining our current business methods and R & D strategies. You may experience a down-scaled networking event at upcoming tradeshows from us, but you will continue to experience new machine and software technologies from our Engineering Staff.

We have a busy Autumn show season coming up, so I look forward to seeing you at EMO in Hannover (Sept 19 – 24); SteelDay in Bradley (Sept 23); or FabTech in Chicago (Nov 14 – 17). We have new machinesand technologies to help you invest in your future!

Peddinghaus builds quality into every step of the manufacturing process, and will continue to do so usingnew investments in metrology automation.

AUTUMN 2011 STEEL FABRICATORS’ REVIEW 7

DORALPContinued from page 5

Q. What Peddinghaus machines do you have inyour shop?

A.We started with a Peddinghaus MDL 1000single spindle drill, and then we invested in:

1. A Peddinghaus BDL 1250 D high speedcarbide drill line

2. A Peddinghaus DG 1100 miter saw

3. An FPDB plate processor with integratedplate material handling

4. The Peddinghaus FPDB plate processingsystem combing punching/drilling/marking/and thermal cutting of all plate components

Peddinghaus is in the Building

Q. Which machine is your favorite?A. I personally like the BDL 1250 D and the

FPDB 2500. The BDL drill is so fast, I cankeep my production on schedule, and still fitin other projects and jobs, which historicallyare fast track with better margins. I also likethe FPDB 2500 plate processor; we have anautomated loading and unloading system thatmeans one operator can produce all plate:base plates, splice plates, gussets, stiffeners –all of them are produced quickly and accu-rately.

Q. What else do you like about thePeddinghaus machines?

A. The machines are simple to learn and easy tooperate – even in Turkey! Their service supportis unparalleled; we use Peddinghaus’ 24 hourservice assistance line all of the time; and haveused their internet remote diagnostics – a won-derful tool! Peddinghaus people are caring, dedicated, and responsible. They have pre-pared my shop layout to insure my materialflow was the best so I am most productive.

Why Automation, Why Peddinghaus?

Q. Could you explain why you emphasized onautomation in your new factory building?

A. We had mentioned about expectations ofclients, quality and speed. I will explain benefits from the Doralp point of view.

1. Reduced fabrication costs in order to bemore competitive,

2. Produce more tonnages with the samenumber of employees,

3. In this century when economic crises areexperienced, the goal is to try and maintain, not increase, the number of employees

4. Save in the amount of steel by reducing thescrap

5. Sustainable and environmental friendlymanufacturing

Q. I understood the rationales for automation.

But why Peddinghaus?A. Indeed, in Summary:

1. Because of the most economic solutionalthough not the cheapest

2. Because it meets requirements of clientsand Doralp

3. Because it is reliable and its after sale is perfect,

4. I feel like I am in my own family environ-ment when I work with Peddinghaus

A Perfect Partnership

Q. What about Peddinghaus Technology? A. Peddinghaus technology is superb. They

combine today’s modern technologies, likeSiemens electronics into a powerful, robustmachine tool. And when I speak of the soft-ware companies that Doralp uses – they allintegrate with Peddinghaus seamlessly.

Q. How would you describe the relationshipbetween Peddinghaus and Doralp?

A. A Perfect Partnership.

Heavy fabricated components are a specialty of Doralp Teknolojik.

Mr. Mustafa Doralp, Peddinghaus’ Ian Walker, and Mr. Sedat Yildirim– a Perfect Partnership.

THE PROJECT — A Golden Opportunity at the University of MinnesotaThe University of Minnesota’s student popula-tion of 52,000 is only rivaled by the throngsof Golden Gopher sports fans who frequent thecampus throughout the academic year.

Responding to the need for quality public transportation, the University of Minnesotacalled upon local agencies to introduce a newlight rail train system. In order to traverse themighty Mississippi River, this system is beingincorporated into one of the university’s mostrecognizable landmarks – the WashingtonAvenue Bridge.

To enable this nearly 50 year old bridge to support the 106,000 lb / 48,000 kg trains thatthe light rail system will employ, LeJeune SteelCompany accepted the challenge to modify thebridge’s fracture critical design. The bridgeenhancement spans just less than one quarter of a mile (1,130 ft / 345 meters), and demands240 heavy steel sections at 25' /8 meter and 50' /15 meter long increments to properly support the weight of the new train system.

THE FABRICATION — Wisconsin StructuralSteel Steps Up to the PlateRoughly 2 hours outside of Minneapolis, in the forests of Barronett, WI Brad Fox, Plant

Manager of Wisconsin Structural Steel, and histeam operate one of the most sophisticated fabrication shops in the upper Midwest. With a resume that includes the Minnesota TwinsBallpark, and the Golden Gophers FootballStadium it's easy to see how much WisconsinStructural Steel contributes to LeJeune’s 40,000ton overall annual production.

To process the heavy sections for this bridge,Brad and his team rely on their Peddinghausequipment. Each of the 16,000 lb/7,250 kg box sections for the bridge were processed on the powerful BDL-1250/9B drill line. The BDL-1250/9B, in tandem with DGP-1270prove to be a powerful combination, especiallywhen accuracy is a major concern.

“Our Peddinghaus equipment has been veryaccurate. The box sections for the bridge inMinnesota are expensive to produce, so anyerror would cause a major cost issue. So far themachine has consistently drilled well within tolerances,” stated Brad. “Here at WisconsinStructural Steel we like to do things right thefirst time, and we are able to do that with thePeddinghaus machines that we have.”

Textbook Bridge Fabrication

LeJeune Steel Bridge Receives High Honors at the University of Minnesota

In today’s marketplace the need to diversify is more apparent than ever. It’s no secret that officebuilding, residential, and general commercial projects remain sluggish in the USA. For some thismay be a cause for concern, but for others this is a sign to explore more vibrant realms within thesteel fabrication marketplace.

According to Reuters news agency, as of March 2011, 69,000 bridges in the USA were in the needof maintenance or replacement. Exhibiting the tools and the talent to go where some other fabri-cators do not, LeJeune Steel Co. of Minneapolis, MN specializes in these projects using theirPeddinghaus equipment. Together with their heavy fabrication division, Wisconsin Structural Steel,LeJeune is a prime example of what modern technology and traditional craftsmanship can do intoday's economy.

Brad Fox, Plant Manager (right) and John Peterson, Detail Manager(left) use their Peddinghaus equipment for a wide array of bridge, and heavy structural fabrication projects.

A critical part of the bridge fabrication process, the FPDB plate processor from Peddinghausproves to be a powerful tool for parts requiringhigh accuracy, and rapid production times. High speed carbide drilling combined with thecarbide marking capabilities of this workhorseprovide superior production, without sacrificingquality or material handling efficiencies.

“With our FPDB we are able to drill 1-1/16" /27 mm holes through 1-1/2" / 38 mm thickplate in only twelve seconds. This helps us

achieve our 70 ton per day production capacity.”Brad had stated. “Our latest addition to our fabshop was the coping machine [ABCM-1250].The day we had installed that machine we hadinstantly shaved 2 man hours off each fabricatedton. It was a great addition to our facility.”

FROM FABRICATION TO FIT-UP —LeJeune’s Minneapolis Plant Puts Parts to the TestLeJeune’s Minneapolis plant is key to final fit-upand quality control. The large box sectionsprocessed on the BDL-1250/9B drill line and theplate components processed using the FPDB areassembled on the floor in Minneapolis to receivefinal approval before being sent into the field.

“You will see multiple bridges at any given pointin time at our Minneapolis plant. We currentlyhave 5 bridges in the shop including theWashington Avenue Bridge. Our most commonbridges are rail bridges but we also have capacityto capture a variety of other projects,” statedMatt Rovnak, Business Manager. “The box sec-tions processed at our Wisconsin plant on thePeddinghaus drill are proven for accuracy righthere. So far every part from our Peddinghausmachines has been right on the money!”

10 STEEL FABRICATORS’ REVIEW AUTUMN 2011

Lenmontag LTD, a steel construction and bridge fabrication company in St.

Petersburg, Russia, in recent years has become an industry leader in the Russia’s

North West region. Breaking into the industrial construction industry in 1991,

Lenmontag began as a small set-up, producing basic construction elements. The

purchase of four Peddinghaus machines allowed Lenmontag to thrive and in 2009

the company grew substantially.

Since 2009, Lenmontag expanded their service offerings to include bridgefabrication. Today 50% of the business is comprised of bridge fabrication, and 50% is traditional industrial construction.

“Peddinghaus equipment is perfect for bridge fabrication,” DmitryMarkovich, First Deputy General Director said. “I produce very accurateparts on Peddinghaus equipment that is unmatched by any other machine.Without Peddinghaus, we would not be able to fabricate bridge parts, because of strict accuracy regulations.”

Educated Buyers Choose PeddinghausIn 2008, Lenmontag was quickly growing into the market leader it is today. An increasing need for newer, faster, and more accurate machines becameurgent. Lenmontag Director, Andrei Golubov, visited many facilities withequipment already installed. Understanding the intense production cycles thesemachines are required to perform, he evaluated machines for accuracy, rigidity, and also service plan offered, should the machine ever require maintenance.

Not only did Peddinghaus equipment prove to withstand the harshest conditions, but local Peddinghaus certified service technicians are readilyavailable to customers in Russia. In addition, the purchase of Peddinghausmachines was made easier with exchange rates at an all time low. ThePeddinghaus equipment came at a lower cost, without sacrificing the accuracy and quality of the machine.

“One of the main reasons we decided to purchase Peddinghaus over other brands, was because VI-MENS [Peddinghaus' regional representative]offers manufacturer certified service technicians right here in Russia,”Markovich said. “Other companies usually fly someone in internationally, which could take days or weeks. With VI-MENS and Peddinghaus, I canhave someone in my shop, looking at my machine, the same day or the nextday after I call. The availability of machine service is invaluable to me; everyhour my machine is down is money I am losing.”

What Lenmontag Has Under the RoofUpon the decision to choosePeddinghaus, Lenmontag purchased four Peddinghausmachines: 1270 DGP Band Saw with AccuMeasuresystem, BDL-1250/9B beamdrill, FDB-2500 plate drill, and the ABCM-1250 coper.Among these machines, two stand out as the mostproductive and cost effectivemachines for Lenmontag.

The FDB-2500 plate machine offers unmatchedefficiency and accuracy.Running an average of 200tons per month, Lenmontaghas significantly reduced costson labor and material sincethe purchase of this machine.

“Nothing can compare to it,” Markovich said. “I am able to produce awhole part from beginning to end in a few short minutes. The Plasma torchgives me clean results, and it is much quicker. ”

The ABCM Oxy-fuel coper is a versatile machine used on several “specialapplication” projects. Lenmontag uses the ABCM to produce standard blockcopes, weld preparation, and much more.

“We use the ABCM for special applications; it is the most cost effectivemachine I have,” Markovich said. “It has been great for all of the bridgework we do.”

Quality Machines = Quality FabricationPeddinghaus machines provide a significant competitive advantage to consumers. Not only do they process more material in less time (savingmoney), but the accuracy and quality of parts produced on the machines is significantly higher than competitors. The Peddinghaus machines haveassisted Lenmontag with their rise to the top.

“Quality wins all,” Markovich said. “Our competitors do not have machineswith the new technology needed in today’s market. Peddinghaus’ innovativetechnology helped our business thrive. Not only do we offer our customersparts produced with cutting edge machines, but we also offer the highestquality fabricated product on the market.”

A Solid Future AheadThe future of Lenmontag looks bright, as business is booming. As a result of the high volume of fabrication projects, Lenmontag has recently begun toexpand the facility again.

“With the increasing demand for bridge fabrication, we have had to add anadditional 15,000 square meters to our facility, to be completed in autumn,”Markovich said. “With the addition, we have had to change the layout of our machines to accommodate more bridge work. The Peddinghausmachines are flexible; due to the modular design, the machines can easily berearranged, allowing for easy integration into the new layout. OurPeddinghaus machines are essential to our future success.”

Ground Floor Shop Design: A Little Bit of Experience and Know How Goes a Long WayWhen Dave Skiles (Plant Manager) was taskedwith designing Steel Services' very first fabrica-tion facility, he applied his connections andexperiences to the endeavor. Originally anorganization that focused on sourcing outsidevendors to process structural steel, Steel Servicestook control of their destiny with a plan toreduce costs, improve quality, and most impor-tantly reduce lead times by establishing theirown plant.

“I had the opportunity to build everythingfrom the ground up, from the workforce tothe equipment. I wanted to make sure webuilt quality into everything that we did.Being the best means using the best equip-ment. That’s why we use Peddinghaus,”stated Dave.

THE RIGHT TOOLS FOR THE JOB

Steel Services Uses Peddinghaus Tool Division Equipment to Rise to the Top

With an appetite for big projects, the team at Steel Services (Indianapolis, IN - USA) proves

that small shops can still achieve high quality, fast lead times, and high tonnages with the right

selection of equipment. Using limited CNC, Steel Services meets customer expectations with

the help of their Peddinghaus Ironworkers, Band Saws, and other Tool Division shop solutions.

Capable of achieving high tonnages each month with just 9 shop employees, Steel Services

proves that old fashioned hard work, skill never goes out of style.

Dave Skiles, Plant Manager of Steel Services (at control panel in center), and his team rely on Peddinghaus tool division equipment to compete in today's complex marketplace.

AUTUMN 2011 STEEL FABRICATORS’ REVIEW 1

From Shop Saws to Ironworkers to PipeNotchers – Peddinghaus Does it All!When it came time to select equipment, all ofthe traditional ironworker and band saw playerswere involved. There are many to choose from, each with their own attributes. With quality andefficiency as a major concern, Peddinghaus cameto mind.

“I remember when I had mentionedPeddinghaus to my colleagues I instantlyhad their attention,” Dave recalled. “Thename is synonymous with quality, and thebigger machines that they traditionally provide. We were in the market for a different kind of machine when it came to ironworkers and shop saws, but the options were there and we were impressedwith what we had seen.”

Two Peddinghaus shop saws, a PeddinghausIronworker with automatic length stop, andPeddinghaus pipe Notcher now call SteelServices home. Their ease of use, quality, ruggedconstruction, and readily available customerservice make a winning combination for theteam in Indy. In addition to these characteristicsthe machines were competitively priced makingDave’s decision much easier.

When Cost Cutting is a Concern Speed isthe Name of the GameWarehouse work is a major component of SteelServices’ production. With a staff of only 9 shopemployees Steel Services is capable of processinghigh tonnages of fabricated steel each month. It’s easy to see how their name within the localmarket has become associated with fast serviceand high quality fabrication. This is a facilitythat has a “no cutting corners” approach to everystep of the fabrication process.

“I know from a past experience how bandsaw operators would struggle with the oldversions of vertical miter saws,” StatedDave. “Although it was great technology for the time, the operator would end upfighting with the saw all day more thananything. Everything was labor intensivefrom laying the saw over manually to themeasurement. This really took a toll onyour speed, production, and more than anything it wore out the operator.”

With the Peddinghaus 410 and 320 band saws, mitering is achieved with ease. Using fullautomation on the 410 saw, this expedites production when consistent mitering at different

angles is required. If measurement is a concernthe unique bundle clamp and measurementdevice serves 2 purposes. It not only allows theoperator to cut multiple profiles simultaneously, but also eliminates the need to manually traverseand measure material between each and everycut while reducing material waste.

“I know that there are situations where weare able to cut bundles of angle using thebundle clamp. This essentially maximizesour cutting capacity. This was not an optionbefore with our older saws,” stated Dave.

Top Tier Fabricators Use Top Notch Equipment“I like to think that we have a great teamhere at Steel Services, and that is half the battle in this business. High qualityequipment is just another factor. I hope that when people look at what we do they see the pride we take in our work. With our Peddinghaus machines, we arewell equipped to tackle any challenge that presents itself.” - Dave Skiles

The Peddinghaus Ironworker and Tube Notcher prove to be a powerful combination for Steel Services.

Warehouse projects are a common sight at Steel Services.

The bundle clamping mechanism of the 410 DGA is complementedby MQL lubrication, and automatic chip conveyor for maximum efficiency.

The easy to use touch screen of the 410 DGA makes production abreeze for all operators.

FABRICATION SHOP SYNERGY:

It’s How Fabricators Make Money Today

Innovative material handling proves to be an important part of how profits are earned in modern fabrication facilities, such as this one in South Africa.

Peddinghaus' team of production experts have years of experiencehelping fabricators achieve their goals.

This shop in Asia places Peddinghaus material handling outdoors foroptimal material flow.

AAA Steel Ltd., in Calgary, Canada houses all equipment in small, manageable outbuildings, while storing material outside in one ofthe harshest winter climates in the world.

20 STEEL FABRICATORS’ REVIEW AUTUMN 2011

Design the Modular Way – One Step at a TimePeddinghaus’ patented modular design of CNCMachinery, accompanied by roller module conveyors and lift/carry cross transfers, make iteasy to grow into the future.

Our engineers can examine your layout, and“start small”. Peddinghaus’ modular design, coupled with rugged construction, mean theconveyor modules can be used in multiplemethods in your shop. The modular design pertains to machines as well, which can be relocated or exchanged as your business grows.

A minimal investment now lays the foundationfor future expansion – at your rate of comfortabledevelopment – based upon your business plan.

Save Shop Space – Bigger Isn’t Always BetterIn this competitive age, what are areas to exam-ine to improve shop efficiency? Don’t invest in ahuge building when a small “garage” or “shed”will do. Why pay property taxes and heat/main-tain thousands of square feet under roof – whenonly a few hundred are needed?

Load outside in your yard – with fork trucks orone dedicated bridge crane – it is fast, safe, andproductive.

Crane Use Drains Money From Your Shop OperationsYou are the manager. Have you ever spent an afternoon in your shop watching youremployees move material with a crane?

Many times cranes are shared, meaning multipleemployees stop working waiting for the crane.Once they have use, it takes them 5 minutes toadjust the chains; then they lift the section.

Watch the other workers in the bay, welders, etc… they stop welding and watch the cranemovement creating a “spectator sport”.

Productive? NO. Expensive? YES. Does yourproject make money with this practice? NO.

Answer: An effective modular conveyor/crosstransfer system throughout your shop!

Skilled Labor is Disappearing – CNC Equipment Works 24/7Ask anyone in the metal working industry – not

just structural fabrication – and the answer is thesame, “I can’t find competent people who wantto work in my steel shop”. Welders, fitters, inspectors, are tough positions to fill even intoday’s job market. Everyone is affected – notjust you – but fabricators on every continentface the same labor dilemma.

Today’s Shop Automation Saves YouMoney – Things to Think AboutThe efficiency of CNC Equipment means lessoperating costs which saves you money in manyareas:

• Ever improving structural software streamlineestimating, detailing, drawing releases, andshop production – this data can be down-loaded directly into a Peddinghaus machinewith no extra steps.

• Because you can operate much more efficiently, your steel costs are more easily controlled, and your inventory is finally undercontrol.

• Automation means you control your own destiny; a late delivery from a vendor oftenmeans your fit-up and weld schedule is ruined, and now you must juggle your work timetable– costing you time and money.

• By staging your production, you can run multiple jobs simultaneously – extending yourbalance sheet and line of credit – for more customers.

A Peddinghaus investment works within yourbudget – and your business plan – to make significant improvements in your work flow.Again, don’t take our word for it – ask successfulPeddinghaus customers – they’re our best advertisement.

Why store material inside? Less space under roof means lower overhead costs, and higher profits.

No gripper means material can be transferred from either side ofconveyor, or completely across with ease.

22 STEEL FABRICATORS’ REVIEW AUTUMN 2011

Exhibited live and under power for the first time, the PeddiWriter™ CNC layout marking machine ignited

interest throughout the industry at the North American Steel Construction Conference (NASCC) last spring.

The first machine of its kind, the PeddiWriter™ uses established plasma technology to offer groundbreaking

layout efficiencies. A standalone solution to today’s costly layout and fit-up bottleneck, the PeddiWriter™ is

widely renowned as the world's most proven layout marking machine.

Two completely independent torches allow for simultaneous marking operations.

THE PEDDIWRITER:

Capturing the Attention of Steel Fabricators Throughout the World

If You Missed it in Pittsburgh...

Imagine a machine that can read connection data directly from a DSTV file, or straight from a Tekla BIM

model, and automatically applies it to any section desired.

Two automatic plasma marking torches rapidly apply marks in seconds. Independent axes of motion allow

the machine to create completely unique characters or shapes on multiple surfaces with no stop in

production. This game changing machine comes standard with the industry’s most precise form of roller

measurement and can be integrated easily into an existing system. This isn’t fantasy, this is the

PeddiWriter™, hands down the most established marking system on the market today.

Piece marks on one surface, layout marks on another, at the sametime, with no stop in production.

Flawless Operation in Any EnvironmentDesigned with the rugged environment of typical fab shops in mind, the PeddiWriter™

relies upon proven plasma technology to automate the processes of layout and fit-up.Hypertherm® ArcWriting torches are utilized toapply layout data directly to the profile in ques-tion. Similar to that of modern plasma cuttingequipment, plasma marking is robust enough, yet precise enough for any structural application.

“One of the biggest advantages of the ArcWritertorch is that it's basically a low powered plas-ma system. Instead of cutting through thesteel, it’s used to mark. It not only does thisquickly and efficiently but it uses a power sup-ply similar to a welding unit, which operatesvery well in dusty or dirty shop environments, “stated Jim Colt, Application TechnologyManager, Hypertherm Inc. “I think some of theadvantages you would see over laser markingor carbide scribing type systems is the ease ofuse, the system is very easy to setup. Basicallyyou turn the unit on, set the power, set thespeed and you’re ready to mark. Once it's setup for marking all you need to do is push ‘go’.”

Clear Designation When You Need It The technology of the PeddiWriter™ makes non-intrusive layout marks that are easily covered by painting or galvanizing processes.Typically layout marks for welded connectionsare only necessary before coating processes, andare undesirable afterwards. Not just for weldinglayout marks, the PeddiWriter™ can clearly designate manual cutting operations if an automated coping system is not available.

Low Amperage Plasma Means No DustExtraction, and Minimized Operating CostsThe ArcWriting torches of the PeddiWriteroperate at nominal amperages to only score thesurface of material, not cut parts. Completelyvisible through rust and scale, the machine doesnot require any sort of dust extraction or partic-ulate collection system and is fully capable ofoperating using clean and dry shop air as analternative to other marking gasses. Operators atthe machine experience no visible smoke or hazeas a result of the plasma marking, and there is

no visible slag left as a remnant surrounding the mark. When compared to high definitionplasma which cuts at amperages that range anywhere from 260 amps to 400 amps, theArcWriter marks contently at just 5 amps. This can be adjusted to higher amperages providing greater marking depths as desired. The machine itself operates at 27 amps – far lessthan common drilling or cutting systems. This not only makes the machine a much fastermarking machine than other designs, but moreeconomical as well.

Versatile Enough To Mark Any ProfileThe PeddiWriter with its dual torch design andindependently operating axes allows you toquickly and efficiently mark any structural steelprofile on any side in seconds. From flats, beamsand channels, to angles and hollow sections, thePeddiWriter will eliminate layout and fit-up bottlenecks with the efficiency and accuracyonly a Peddinghaus machine can provide.

Dedicated to building modernequipment for the structural steel and heavy plate fabricationindustries, Peddinghaus grew by implementing the latest in scientific technologies. From electric motors in the 1920’s toearly personal computer technolo-gy in the 1970’s, Peddinghaus isdedicated to developing new equipment which reflects state of the art engineering designs.

Starting in 1974, Dr. C. U.Peddinghaus led the companythrough years of growth and success. He was an integral part ofthe development of Peddinghausbenchmark products for structuralsteel fabrication. Under his tenurenew technologies as the CNC

beam drill/saw lines, ABCM automated coping systems, andFDB/FPB plate processing systemswere successfully introduced to an eager marketplace.

How it All BeganPeddinghaus’ first products weredrop-forged anvils and vises; later producing hand operatedpunching and sheering machinesfor the metal working industry. The hammer at the Peddinghausforge left an impression on theyoung Dr. Peddinghaus.

“I remember hearing the forginghammers when I was younger,”Dr. Peddinghaus said, “I knewthat was the sound of manufactur-ing and progress.”

True to the Peddinghaus familytradition, Dr. Peddinghaus literallystarted at the bottom of the corpo-rate ladder – helping load/unloadtrucks – when he was 12 years old. From this humble beginning, Dr.Peddinghaus learned “hands on”within the company. He thenwent to the university where heserved a business practicum beforeachieving his doctorate degree. Atthat time he assumed a leadershiprole in the company.

Do It Yourself TechnologyUnder his guidance, Peddinghauscontinued to flourish. The adventof the first drilling machines(known as the TDU) were such cutting edge technology for theirtime that PC programmers werenot available to support theirdevelopment. Dr. Peddinghausused his software knowledge andexpertise to actually design hisown software programs to operatethese machines.

Dr. Peddinghaus said. “I went tocustomer’s shops and installed theprograms for the machines myself;it was easier and less expensive todo it that way.”

Peddinghaus products like the 210series ironworkers, Caddy/Cadaxbar shears, and similar products. These were sold through established distribution channels.

In 1976, Dr. Peddinghaus purchased a recognized machinetool manufacturing firm (MancoMfg.) in Bradley, IL. He was looking to expand Peddinghaussales and manufacturing in thevibrant North American market.

“Costs associated with selling tothe U.S. from a European loca-tion, made it difficult to be suc-cessful,” Dr. Peddinghaus said. “Ichose the location in Bradley, because it was close to Chicago, near the airports, making it easilyaccessible for our customers. Also, the shop was already set-up withmachine tools which we needed, because Manco had manufacturedproducts similar to ours.”

“Establishing PeddinghausCorporation in the U.S. was my greatest accomplishment with the company.”

Choosing to manufacture in the USA was indeed a prudentinvestment. In 1997, Peddinghausexpanded manufacturing to a new facility in Andrews, SC.
