• The Constitution created Congress.

• It is a group of people elected to make laws for the country.

• Congress has two parts:

Legislative Branch

The job of the legislative branch of state government is to make the laws. A bill is an

idea for a law.

This branch has two parts: the Senate and the House of Representatives. Together these two groups are called the General

Assembly.

• There are 435 representatives.

• Representatives serve for a term of two years.

• They can be elected for more than one term.

IF THE GOVERNOR VETOES THE BILL, another vote can be taken. If 3/5 of the General Assembly votes to approve the bill this time, the

bill becomes a law.

How does a bill become a law?

First, citizens develop an idea for a bill. A bill is an idea for a law.

Next, members of the House or Senate propose the bill to other members.

Then, the General Assembly votes to approve the bill.

After that, the governor signs the bill OR the governor vetoes the bill.

A leader is a person who helps others get a job done.

Good leaders help citizens decide how they can reach a goal. A good leader

• The Supreme Court is the highest court is the U. S., and is the system of courts to settle questions about the laws.

• The nine justices can serve for as long as they live, or wish to retire.
