Patriot Paws Charity AuctionApril 9, 2016

In continued support of the Patriot Paws organization, Corvette Legends of Texas held their 4th Annual Auction at Casa Del Rio in Allen, TX. It was led once again, by Susan Joseph and Joel Joseph. This year’s auction was the best yet, with a large group in attendance, and almost 90 items donated for the auction. It was a day packed full of some very different items. Our own Auctioneer, Dan Jacobs, lead the way with his skills and energy. Many thanks to Dan as we couldn’t have done it without you. Donations consisted of Gift Cards from Corvette World of Dallas, Starbuck Coffee Gift bag, Service Dis-count coupons from Corvette Corners, DMS Corvettes, Diagnostic Analysis from Carr’s Corvette, Rangers Base-ball Tickets, Swimming Pool Care and Fun Package, Tools, Corvette Art Deco, Harley Davidson Riding Jacket, Harley Davidson Art Deco Wall Shelf, Egyptian Paintings, Christmas Story Leg Lamp “A Major Award”, handmade Baby Birth Day Keepsake Pillows, a variety of Corvette Glasses, and many, many more items. There was a little something for everyone. Everyone seemed to have a great time, and the club as a whole, showed their support to the Auction. With everything being sold by the end of the Auction, people

Auctioneer, Dan Jacobs (right) running the auction with help from Bill Preston (left) and Don Sebertwent an extra step and added more cash to their totals. With the preliminary results in, this year the club has raised around $3,000 from the auction. In addition, Bill Preston led and challenged others who collected ad-ditional cash donations of almost another $1,000 from various other events (Ft Worth Car Show, Dallas New Car Show, Pate Swap meet, etc). Hats off to Bill for all the hard work to make this year’s fund raising, the Clubs largest yet. Many thanks to all the Club members who really stepped up and showed that we can make a difference when we join together in support of an organization like the Patriot Paws. We just can’t thank everyone enough for all the support and donations that made this year’s Auction a huge success. Don’t forget to come out to the June 11 meeting at B.J’s Roadhouse and Brewery in Addison, where we will present our final donation to Patriot Paws. Representa-tives will be there to tell us more about Patriot Paws and do a demonstration with one of their Service Dogs.Editor’s Note: Susan and Joel Joseph put an amazing amount of work into organizing the auction again this year. They even brought their kids to run the computer and logging system that Joel had worked out and put on the Cloud so that members could check out faster, and even during the auction if desired.

Several of us stayed at the old original Arlington Hotel, which is the only hotel to have the hot spring coming directly into it. Its overly large wrap-around porch is a really great place to grab a table and watch the world go by, while having an adult beverage, or a nice glass tea if you must. It sits on the main drag through Hot Springs and the road is always full of Corvettes. The weekend events included a parade through town and the immediate area on Friday evening end-ing with dinner at a local restaurant. Saturday was the car show with 238 Vettes of all generations packed into the Convention Center Arena. Ken Dobbs, Jerry Echols and I entered our cars where Ken took a well-deserved Best of Show, out of all those great cars, with his magnificent silver 63 split-window. Ken’s car will be on display at the show arena next year in a place of honor all by itself. That makes two legends who have taken that hard-to-get award, as Gerry Boren did it also with his white 1960 a few years back. First timers, Al and Mary Anne Lisbona, were ev-erywhere with their GoPro 4 helmet camera and they got some great footage of the drive over the Talimena and at the show. Don’t look up, candid camera is watching!! Put that thing down Lisbona. Al posted his video coverage of the trip on the Corvette Legends Facebook page. We also took a tour boat, the Belle, for a two-hour cruise of Lake Hamilton, which has some 700 miles of shoreline and impressive waterfront homes. We closed the trip with a round of congratulations for Ken and Linda’s Best of Show win at the Fisherman’s Wharf Saturday night, then home on Sunday morning. The weather could not have been better, as we hit the window after the big storms rolled through our part of the country and all had a really good time.Another good Legends outing. Wishing you were there... NEXT YEAR!

Legends at Hot Springs by Tom Lainson

photos by Ken & Linda Dobbs,

Jerry Echols, Al Lisbona, Tom & Cathy Hubbert

Thursday, April 21 we delayed our departure from our meeting place in McKinney by an hour to let the last of the storm clear the area and took off. We headed for Paris, Texas for a pit stop then on into Oklahoma. This route takes us through Hugo, Antlers (birthplace of the infamous Jerry Echols) and on up route 271 on a nicely winding scenic highway into Talihina, Oklahoma. It is the kickoff point for the Talimena Scenic Highway over the ridge tops of the Kiamichi Mountains into Arkansas. Talihina is also the home of Pam’s Hateful Hussy Diner, where you’re likely to see anyone from anywhere halving lunch. Side note: Carl Johanson, Pam wanted to know something about a hand in a sack, and said to say, “Hey.” Ask Mary Anne Lisbona about her picture with the two local residents on the bench outside Pam’s place. As usual, we pulled into the Panorama Overlook on the Scenc Highway, where you can see one heck of a long way in every direction, a nice stop after the winding up and down drive to get there. We came down off the ridge into Mena Arkansas and on into Hot Springs, ar-riving in time for registration for the Corvette events and happy hour.

The “Scenic” group at Pam’s Hateful Hussy Diner in Talihena Echols, Lisbonas, Entrekins and Lainsons setting out on the “Belle”.

from Ken Dobbs’ perspective: Linda and I left out Thursday morning, pulling the trailer up I-30. Tom, Sandy and the rest of the Legends crew went north up through Oklahoma and down through Mena, Ar-kansas via the scenic route to Hot Springs. After everybody signed in, we went to the Brick House for dinner which was a lot of fun. Friday afternoon was the big parade thru town and out to a highschool for dinner. Linda counted 236 Vettes in the parade as we watched it leave. Linda and I went shoe shopping, bought Subway and went to Lake Katherine, which was very pretty. Linda found out why you do not feed the geese !!! Tom, our tour guide, called and said instead of going with the 236 Corvettes in the parade to eat Mexican food at the high school, we would go to the Copper Penny for din-ner. SOOOO he left the parade and cut thru a McDonald’s to come back into town and 112 vettes followed him thru McDonald’s At the Saturday car show we set up our cars, Lunch was furnished, chicken, fish, fries, beans, hush puppies, fried pies, tea and lemonade. Really good vittles. Every one was stuffed. Show was great. Lots of really nice cars and people and of course, Corvette Legend brought home the Gold! Tom Lainson won a class award in C-1 also Best Interior, Jerry Echols won a sponsor award and Tom also got a sponsor award, I had won first place in C-2 several years in a row, but not this time, which was OK. There were some really nice cars in my class, so I got a class award. Then they called out the Best of Show Ken Dobbs and his 63 Split Window!! I nearly died. I was truly honored with this award in this company. Legends on this trip:Tom & Mary Jean Entrekin, Jerry & Barb Echols, Ken & Linda Dobbs, Al & Mary Anne Lisbona, Tom & Sandy Lainson, Tom & Cathy Hubbert Carl Johanson and Esther Towles were scheduled to go, however severe damage to their homes, business and cars from the very destructive hail storm that hit Wylie forced them to stay and take care of business there.

7Jerry Echols tries to latch on to Ken Dobbs’ trophy... AGAIN!!! Barb & Jerry Echols and Cathy & Tom Hubbert at the Hateful Hussy.
