Welcome to Picacho Peak! Visitors traveling along I-10 in southern Arizona can’t miss the prominent 1,500-foot peak of Picacho Peak State Park. Enjoy the view as you hike the trails that wind up the peak and, often in the spring, overlook a sea of wildfl owers. The park and surrounding area are known for its unique geological signifi cance, outstanding and varied desert growth, and historical importance. The unique shape has been used as a landmark by travelers since prehistoric times. One of the fi rst written records was in the 1700s by the Anza Expedition as it passed through the area.

The park facilities include a visitor center with exhibits and a park store, hiking trails, playground, historical markers, picnic areas, group picnic ramadas, 80 site electric campground, group camp areas, dump station/potable water, restrooms, and showers. Group use areas, for day and overnight use, are available by reservation.

Before you hike, plan ahead! Familiarize yourself with the trails, know the day’s highs and lows, bring plenty of water and wear proper footwear. Our trails are steep and challenging!

The route is steep and twisting, with steel cables (gloves are recommended) anchored into the rock in places where the surface is bare. This is a diffi cult but rewarding hike!

Sunset Vista Trail: 3.1 miles; moderate fi rst 2 miles, becoming diffi cult; travels on the south side and is steep and twisting, with steel cables (gloves are recommended) anchored into the rock in places where the surface is bare. This is a diffi cult but rewarding hike! This trail is not recommended during hot weather seasons.
