![Page 10: Legacy way ITS summit 2015 presentation with notes](https://reader034.vdocuments.site/reader034/viewer/2022042821/55d2f8fabb61eb601b8b47a2/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
Slide 10. Jet fan example
The SCADA system sends out a command to the relevant CPU cabinet over the PMCS network
The CPU cabinet then communicates with the relevant Remote Input Ouput module called RIO module.
The RIO module sends a run output to the relevant switchboard.
The fan motor starts and sends feedback back to the SCADA system that the fan is running.
10
![Page 11: Legacy way ITS summit 2015 presentation with notes](https://reader034.vdocuments.site/reader034/viewer/2022042821/55d2f8fabb61eb601b8b47a2/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
Slide 11. Field cabinets
The photo shows a surface field cabinet containing redundant power supplies and redundant Remote input output modules.
Each RIO has a connection to each layer 2 switch in the cabinet, so the photo shows two Ethernet connections per RIO module

Slide 12. System Overview
So that’s the PMCS example.
Now to look at how the Tollroad Traffic Management and Control Systems (TTMCS) network has been designed.
The Tollroad Traffic Monitoring and Control systems Incorporates

![Page 14: Legacy way ITS summit 2015 presentation with notes](https://reader034.vdocuments.site/reader034/viewer/2022042821/55d2f8fabb61eb601b8b47a2/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
Slide 14. Electronic Signs
Start with electronic signs. The photo shows a single line tunnel message sign
14
![Page 15: Legacy way ITS summit 2015 presentation with notes](https://reader034.vdocuments.site/reader034/viewer/2022042821/55d2f8fabb61eb601b8b47a2/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
Slide 15. Electronic Signs
Electronic signs are across the project in the form of changeable message signs, variable message signs, variable speed limits signs, flashing warning signs, over height warning signs not forgetting dual aspect traffic signals, all Legacy way equipment uses controllers with Ethernet connections and IP addresses.
This photo shows variable speed limit signs on the Inner City Bypass
On this project there are two 3 x 18 VMS outside the tunnel and 55 single line vms in the tunnel.
VMS inside the tunnel will display preset messages.
VMS outside the tunnel will display preset messages and travel time.
There are 27 of the larger type C Variable Speed Limit Signs outside the tunnel , 18 operated by TMR.
15
![Page 16: Legacy way ITS summit 2015 presentation with notes](https://reader034.vdocuments.site/reader034/viewer/2022042821/55d2f8fabb61eb601b8b47a2/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
Slide 16. Electronic Signs
Electronic signage will be used for standard tunnel operations and also emergency closures.
Sign Controllers mounted in local field cabinets have Ethernet ports connected to the network.
The sign controllers also have digital inputs activated via the Remote input output modules, remembering that the RIO is also connected to the network.
So the changeable message sign, can be driven through the Ethernet port on the controller or via a digital input from the RIO.
During an emergency the PMCS has priority. On button implements a complete tunnel closure.

Slide 17. Traffic Data
The Tollroad Traffic Monitoring and Control systems Incorporates standard road loops provided by Juvana with loop interface units provided by excel technology group
There are also five bluetooth devices.
There is one on the Innercity bypass tunnel approach, one on the western freeway
tunnel approach, two Bluetooth sensors installed at the midpoint of tunnel, one on each direction.
There is also one Bluetooth sensor on Milton Road, which is the congested road the tunnel will bypass. This device will be used as a measure to calculate journey times for vehicles bypassing the tunnel.
As a back up traffic data can be provided by the AID system.
17

Slide 18. PA speakers
All of the equipment is IP based including the PA speakers
The Public Address System Manager will use the PA speakers for:
• Providing voice messages for alerting tunnel users when required
• It also provides priority breaking‐in over radio rebroadcast informing to vehicle occupants within the tunnel
• Messages can be ad‐hoc or pre‐recorded• Messages can be edited and organized based on audio
plans

Slide 24 Challenges
The main challenge within the tunnel has been the number of parallel work fronts taking place during equipment install.
There were literally hundreds of pieces of equipment such as scissor lifts and site vehicles in each bore, even with round the clock shift working.
The PMCS commissioning team were working alongside the electrical install teams to ensure no down time.
24
![Page 25: Legacy way ITS summit 2015 presentation with notes](https://reader034.vdocuments.site/reader034/viewer/2022042821/55d2f8fabb61eb601b8b47a2/html5/thumbnails/25.jpg)
Slide 25 Challenges
Outside the tunnel there is more space to work but then the Queensland weather comes into play.
Our site utes were some of the 39,000 vehicles damaged in the Brisbane CBD area by the Hail storm last november
And the photo shows our site compound was also flooded by 400mm of rain in 24 hours and this has happened several more times since this photo was taken.
25
![Page 26: Legacy way ITS summit 2015 presentation with notes](https://reader034.vdocuments.site/reader034/viewer/2022042821/55d2f8fabb61eb601b8b47a2/html5/thumbnails/26.jpg)
Slide 26 Conclusion
A fully IP based system tunnel system was a godo achievement
The design offers redundancy and will help reduce journey times.
There are many more systems not discussed such as overheight vehicle detection, radio rebroadcast system
