THINK FUTURE OF MANUFACTURING
Perfectly placed
Manufacturing contributes over £6.7 trillion to the global economy. In terms of Gross Value Added, the UK is in the world’s top 10, generating 10% of UK GVA. Manufacturing directly employs 2.5 million people, generates half of UK exports and accounts for three quarters of R&D business here. Manufacturing in Leeds City Region is worth over £7.7bn, with double the national average of companies in advanced manufacturing and the UK’s biggest manufacturing employment base.
The UK Government aims to make the UK the best place to start, finance and grow a business. It is reducing regulatory burdens and has outlined significant investment and incentives to support research and innovation in the UK.
Furthermore the UK has a highly competitive tax environment, especially around research costs, with R&D tax credits, as well as access to The Patent Box. This makes the UK one of the most competitive locations globally to reduce costs around innovation.
DRIVING INNOVATION IN THE UK
BY 2050, THE MANUFACTURING SECTOR WILL BE A COMPLEX, HIGH-VALUE ECOSYSTEM AND WILL BE SO MUCH MORE THAN THE LITERAL PRODUCTION LINE. TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCES
WILL DRIVE A REVOLUTION IN AN ECOSYSTEM WHERE SUSTAINABILITY NO LONGER REMAINS OPTIONAL.
Sir Mike Gregory, Head of the Institute for Manufacturing, University of Cambridge
05Think Future
Globalisation has driven production facilities towards countries with the lowest labour costs and/or the largest markets. However we are seeing a resurgence of high-value manufacturing in the UK, and Leeds City Region in particular, for good reason.
These changes in manufacturing are driven by a combination of process innovation, new technology and changing customer demand; none more so than in areas of high-value activity, such as advanced/precision engineering.
With the greatest concentration of high-value manufacturers in the UK, and renowned for its scale, diversity and excellence, Leeds City Region is well placed to shape the rapidly changing manufacturing environment, as well as capture the opportunities it presents.
Our key selling point is our ability to provide high quality bespoke engineering solutions across a diverse range of key growth sectors and technical competencies, including precision technologies, robotics, metrology, digital manufacturing and smart materials. This, together with our greatest asset, the knowledge, know-how, ingenuity and tenacity of our people make us the place to make it.
LEEDS CITY REGION: FIT FOR THE FUTURE

The UK’s most comprehensive support ecosystem
TAP INTO A READY MADE MANUFACTURING HUB
Leeds City Region is home to the UK’s most comprehensive manufacturing supply chain. The wealth of Tier 2 and 3 manufacturers located here ensures a highly efficient system across the entire sector. The proximity of suppliers minimises transport time and costs, and enables greater collaborative working opportunities.
Uniquely, Leeds City Region not only has the largest manufacturing base in the country, but also the most comprehensive offer in terms of the wider manufacturing supply chain. The area’s tradition for manufacturing has nurtured the most extensive ecosystem of complementary activity linked to the industry.
Leeds City Region has the largest concentration of financial and professional services outside London. These evolved through offering valuable business services, including specialist legal and financial advice to assist manufacturing companies at every stage of their development. Given the Region’s central location, its transport and logistics infrastructure is a major supporting factor for the manufacturing industry.
28Think Supply Chain
ADDING VALUE THROUGH BESPOKE ENGINEERING
BorgWarner, VTL and Turbo Precision are all successful examples of manufacturing firms based in Leeds City Region who add value through bespoke engineering. The US engineering giant Cummins has its global turbo technologies research and development headquarters in Huddersfield. Together with other local manufacturers of gears, pumps and valves across our city region, they form a specialist value-chain of mission-critical components for larger systems in automotive, energy, chemical and low carbon industries.
Similar value-chains exist to support traditional large-scale production too. In Wakefield, global food and drink companies like Coca-Cola Enterprises and Haribo have developed partnerships with nearby specialists in packaging, distribution and logistics. As well as these specialist value-chains, our region has an abundance of connectivity, talent and land that huge global leaders in production and distribution need for growth.
Manufacturing in Leeds City Region is broad-based – cutting across all the key growth markets such as energy, power train, automotive, health and medical, food and drink and clothing and textiles. Not surprising given the strength and depth particularly in component manufacturing and precision.
