DESCRIPTION

Presenter: Michael Pula, Senior Relations Manager, Panduit Corporation Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) is a rating system developed by the U.S. Green Building Council that encourages global adoption of sustainable and environmentally proven building methods. LEED benefits more than just commercial enterprises, but extends to neighborhoods, schools, healthcare and retail. This workshop takes a common sense approach to environmentally sustainable design, architecture and materials and demonstrates the benefits both in terms of lower operating costs as well as lowering environmental carbon footprint. Local and global examples will be presented.

STORM WATER QUANTITY CONTROL

Seventy percent of water used at home is used outdoors.

Running a sprinkler for 2 hours can use up to 500 gallons of water.

66,175 gallons of water are used outdoors per household, per year

That same roof in a region receiving 30 inches of annual rainfall generates 41,000 gallons of reusable water.

STORM WATER QUALITY CONTROL

The Bioswale on the Illinois State University campus handles water runoff. The Constitution Trail runs through the parking lot behind Redbird Baseball field, which drains into nearby Sugar Creek.

A 10’ wide by 150’ long strip of asphalt was excavated, and two and half feet of sandy soil mix was installed in its place.

Both an erosion control and wet-meadow seed mix was specifically selected and sown.

The bio-swale is slightly concave in an effort to store some runoff as water percolates into the soil. MAY 30, 2009KENDALL COLLEGE - BUSINESS WORKSHOP

16

GOAL: Prevent the post-development peak discharge rate and runoff quantity from exceeding the pre-development peak discharge rate .

HEAT ISLAND EFFECTNON-ROOF

White Topping

Rather than resurfacing, a thin three inch (3”) layer of concrete is installed over existing asphalt. This eliminates the need to remove the old asphalt and reduces landfill waste.

The concrete lasts longer and it is estimated in most cases to be twice the life of asphalt. This conserves both money and resources as the surface needs to be replaced less frequently.

The white color has a high albedo and reflects rather than absorbs light. The reflective quality of the concrete doubled the candle power in the parking lot. This means more light with our existing lighting fixtures at no additional cost and a safer environment for faculty, staff and students.

The lighter surface color also helps reduce the heat island effect, which is often felt in parking lots with black/dark colors (temperatures can sometimes be 10 -12 degrees warmer because the dark color absorbs heat).

HEAT ISLAND EFFECTROOF

Green Roofs Intensive green roofs can sustain

shrubs, trees, walkways and benches with their complex structural support, irrigation, drainage and root protection layers. A foot or more of growing medium needed for an intensive green roof creates a load of 80-150 pounds (36-68 kilograms) per square foot.

Extensive green roofs are relatively light at 15-50 pounds (7-23 kilograms) per square foot. They support hearty native ground cover that requires little maintenance. Extensive green roofs usually exist solely for their environmental benefits and don't function as accessible rooftop gardens.

The green roof on the Chicago City Hall helps cool the building and minimize water run-off

Use building materials or products that have been extracted, harvested or recovered, as well as manufactured, within 500 miles of the project site.

Should include concrete, architectural precast concrete, masonry, structural steel, glass, etc.

Page 35: LEED the Way to a Greener Business Environment Today

CERTIFIED WOOD PRODUCTS

Use a minimum of 50% of wood-based materials and products, which are certified in accordance with the Forest Stewardship Council’s (FSC) Principles and Criteria, for wood building components. These components include, but are not limited to, structural framing and general dimensional framing, flooring, sub-flooring, wood doors and finishes.

37

Install permanent carbon dioxide monitoring system in office areas to provide feedback that allow operational adjustments of the ventilation system via outside air and return air dampers.

Reduce particles and pollutants by confining dust generating equipment outside of shared office space

Page 38: LEED the Way to a Greener Business Environment Today

INCREASED VENTILATION

For mechanically ventilated spaces, increase breathing zone outdoor air ventilation rates to all occupied spaces by at least 30% above the minimum rates.
